They are pushing it hard here in Denmark, and it is catching on, sadly due to my country being one of the most yankeephile(made up word) nation in Europe after Poland. Seriously I expect we will be celebrating the US independence day soon as a national holiday. Sigh and then they blame the muslims for ruining our cultural values.

My rant aside, no I have ignored the black friday thing, especially due to our high VAT the price cuts are not that huge, certainly not out of the ordinary. The whole thing feels like a scam.

It's called cheese rolling thank you very much

How in the hell did you guys conquer a quarter of the world? Well at least you exported tea culture and cricket instead of cheese rolling.

Thanks for the link, very entertaining. I had no idea such a tradition existed.

There's really nothing I can say, so I'll just let this do the talking for me:

Seriously UK?

Yeah, crept to Sweden as well. Opened up the newspaper this morning. "BLACK FRIDAY SALES!". No stores, no matter how much you write it in BOLDED LETTERS it won't become something over here. Urgh.

?I got a Dyson but I don?t even know if I want it. I just picked it up,? Louise Haggerty, a 56-year-old hairdresser and waitress, said of her 1am trip to the Black Friday sales. ?It was mental in there. It was crazy. It was absolutely disgusting, disgusting.?
Frustrated with not being able to buy a Blaupunkt 40? TV reduced from £299.99 to £149.99, Haggerty rushed to pick up a Dyson Animal Vac, down from £319.99 to £159.99. ?I don?t even know how much it costs, I don?t know even know if I?m going to buy it. I just wanted something,? she said. ?There are lads in there three, four, five tellies. It?s not fair.?
Capitalism ho! We already have Boxing Day, and now this? And for some reason this has made people even more deranged.

I had to queue to go on a website :(

I didn't even want to buy anything, I just wanted to see if PC World sold any decent speakers.
Let's hope it doesn't escalate here as it has in the US.

I feel we should combine them - something like chasing the royal family through the streets of York then fighting them for a cheap TV.
Presumably the Benny Hill theme would play on a loop for the duration of the event?

OT: Globalization's a hell of a drug.

I'm disgusted by black friday. I accept that companies are founded on an ever probing, ever grasping and unstable greed but what i have seen of black friday shows a kind of reckless selfishness that I thought impossible in this day and age. When I first saw videos of it a few years ago I was thankful that it wasn't something we had over here in the UK but here we are.

I'm not opposed to companies giving discounts unless they are the sort which is only a deal because a company tells you it is, a tablet 'deal' on a monthly rate which ends up costing you more than the actual thing is worth being an example but an environment in which real people are reduced to animals fighting over a bloody television is obscene. If it's going to stay over here make it resemble something civil. Ensure there is enough stock to supply demand, make it online only or if it must be something done in person give people a dammed number let numbers 1-30 into the store first. Monitor how full the store is and then let more people in when appropriate.

I work for a Currys / PC World 2-in-1 store. One of my colleagues posted this on her Facebook last night.

Seriously. Black Friday is bullshit and it has no place here other than a ridiculous marketing gimmick.

Fellow Currys/PCWorld employee here and trust me this is actually a good image, many sites have crashed from the sheer activity, Dixons was clever to create a queing system.

And decent Speaker are the Bose Mini, Sony srx 5(the roundish one), Harmon/Kardon Eskire, UE Boom AND JBL Flip 2. well portable ones anyway.

Anyway, my branch was actually doing really well today unlike other retailers where people where beating and walking over each other. I saw some horror scenes on TV.

This is my second BF and it was well managed... Boxing day could be worse though :p

A friend of mine worked a black friday shift at Gamestop today. There was a huge rush for the first hour, then things got so quiet they actually sat around playing Legend Of Zelda Monopoly (She was the Ocarina) with customers for two hours while they waited for someone to come in.
Maybe it's different outside of New York, but we just don't care that much.

Boxing Day is my hell - I'm in Knowhow. :-/

Most of what happened in my store happened before I got there - apparently we had people queueing from 4am to get in. Yes, the 55" LG was a decent deal, but sheesh.

The general consensus from what I've seen on the shop floor is that - in terms of sales - Boxing Day is actually likely to come out less than Black Friday was. But then today was ridiculous; our RM was chasing sales target commitments from all the branches the other day, ours wasn't high enough so we increased it, and then on the day the floor guys hit double the increased amount.

The other problem with Boxing Day - where I am, at least - is Tube strikes.

That's... That's just... I would say stupid but I still don't want to call them stupid just yet. If I was a Business Analysts for one of those news stations, I would be having a very wet org... erm feeling, at the sound of Capitalism winning and money ruling.
