I don't know why. I don't really care to know why. All I know is that 13,000 more people clicking that little thumb means that we'll actually get to see something that hopefully is not (admittedly well done) screenshots.

Looks like they are checking to see if people are still interested in the project... or this is just some PR shenanigans.

Screw it, doesn't harm me any for pressing that button.

It's pretty funny that the Half Life remake also got caught in the Valve time vortex.
I really don't care about new media, just when if at all they will have something to play, on their forums I suggested long long ago that they should turn it into episodes and just gradually put the pieces into use... but that resulted in a massive flamewar, I'm probably even banned by now.

It seems kind of narcissistic of Valve to do this shit, especially after stringing its fan base around for so long.

This isn't made by Valve. It's a fan made mod.

If the developer's will to continue is based on remaining interest, then this could be the end of Black Mesa. It's been eight years since development started! And there have been several promises of a release window with no results. Many people are tired of the waiting and false hope. And 20,000 likes just for a new piece of media? At this point, if it's not a ton of preview videos or the game itself, then most people won't bother.

I refuse. They should just do whatever they're gonna do without doing something as pointless as getting likes on Facebook first.

It's not valve... it's a mod made by a handful of independent developers. A total conversion of the source engine, bringing Half-Life 1 to Half-Life 2 standards.

It's also free.

I don't take anything on Facebook seriously. If you want to drum up support for a project, there are better ways to do it.

This seems rather egotistical, but I guess it's the only way we get to see any new content.

There's worse ways to do it, too -- not to mention more expensive ways. Facebook has the virtue of being free, which is good when you're a hobbyist mod development team working on no budget in your spare time.

OT: Eh, I clicked like. I figure it won't hurt, and now I'll actually get updates on Facebook when we get some new information once every three years or so :p

Be more of a hipster? Why would you just not take something serious because it's on Facebook? Facebook serves as a great advertising tool and way to reach people for support.

Agreed, there are worse ways to do it but I'm not fond of the 'like' mechanic of Facebook in such instances, it's just so lazy. It contributes nothing, just shows that people are willing to take 3 seconds to load the page and click 'like' just to get something new.

Thread URL now!

OT: I will like it if I remember to. Hopefully we might actually get to play this year or next year.

Been called a lot of things in my time but never a hipster, thanks for that first.

Sure, Facebook is great for getting your name or brand out there. But I don't take it seriously when my news feed is a billboard for advertisements I couldn't care less about.

And what does asking for 'likes' accomplish? Checking the pulse to see if there is still interest in your project? I'm a big fan of all things Half Life, if the devs fired up a Kickstarter then I would gladly give them some of my coin to help see this project to its release. However, I refuse to 'like' it on Facebook just so they can release an other trailer or what have you.

You do know that you have to like a page for its advertisements to show up on your wall, right? That's kind of the point here. They get 20,000 people to like it, that's 20,000 people who will be reminded of the project every time they release new information.

And I agree: being anti-facebook the way you seem to be is kind of hipsterish. Not using it because you have a problem with datamining, sure. Not using it because you think it's in some way shallow? That is, in itself, pretty shallow.

I believe a 'LOL' is in order.

Using it in this way is just obnoxious (moreso when actual publishers use it, admittedly). What's going to happen if they only get to 19,999 likes and it never goes up? They'll just never release any promotional media?

It's the laziest way for a publisher to 'engage' their audience.

OT: Perhaps they're just trying to gauge interest. Still stupid though.

Not talking Wall here but rather, News Feed advertisements. Last time I checked, I never 'liked' Capital One or Psoriasis Research.

And for the record, I am on Facebook. I've been actively using it since I created my profile in the fall of 2005. So I'm not conjecturing here as someone who has never used it and is relying solely on what he has read.

I'm merely trying to convey that having people 'like' something is a pretty crappy way to gauge interest and advertise your product/service. I have friends who 'like' their own status updates and I have an aunt who 'likes' every single one of my status updates even if she does not understand my obscure movie or video game references.

So no, I don't think Facebook is the best way to put your product out there. It's certainly not the worst, but it could be a lot better.

Thank you for conveying my thoughts much more succinctly than I could.

Even on your newsfeed, you have to have liked the page, or your friends have to have shared the post or something. There's ads on the sides of the page, but that's different from something showing up on your newsfeed. Those ads are just the sort of banner and text ads that nearly all sites, even respectable news sites have.

And I still don't think you understand what a page is. Liking a page is a different process from liking a post. They used to call it "becoming a fan," if you'll remember.

I don't reckon this mod will ever see the light of day.

They've been making it for years now...never giving out any updates or anything at all and it just seems incredibly badly organised.

The forums of the project are so bloody hostile too.
