Also, I'm listening to Dark Fortress, a German black metal band.
They're awesome too.

Is it just me, or does black metal sound not loud enough? I haven't heard much black metal beyond Cradle of Filth. Don't get me wrong, I love black metal. My problem, though, is it sounds far away, like it's not loud enough. Maybe I just need to develop that "taste" everyone keeps talking about.

I do enjoy some of it, like Dimmu Borgir, Anaal Nathrakh, and Septic Flesh (though I am not sure if they are Melodic Death or Atmospheric Black)

I find all the corpse paint and spikes quite funny, but it's harmless and adds to the feel of the music. The whole Satanist thing that some black metal groups take too far is just sad though.

As far as the music is concerned, I like Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir (went to see them a while back) Mayhem, 1349 (best black metal I've heard as far as crazy blasting goes ) And Emperor are ok too I guess.

Actually Vikings have their own genre. Check out Amon Amarth.
And I believe Children of Bodom is death metal.

No, I like some metal but black just seems like making alot of noise for the sake of being loud nothing behind it.

Many black metal bands utilise full orchestras and choirs, and musically speaking it is in fact one of the most melodic and technically intricate and skillful forms out there.

Of all the black metal bands people have listed on this thread, i have only heard one - Cradle of Filth. However, having heard them, i have no desire to hear any others. So much no desire that you could call it negative desire, if you felt so inclined.

It's not just the complete lack of talent that the try to make up for with epic distortion and picking fast and screaming like a tart. It's also the whole satanism thing that these bands embrace, all the killing jesus imagery and the "look at satan, he's awesome".

Don't get me wrong, i am in no way a fan of religion. But satanic obsession is to me just as ill-informed and stupid as any other religious persuasion.

Cradle of Filth are no more satanic the watching The Omen.

It is pantomine and the lyrics are meant to be narrative.

There are a few black metal bands who take the Satan things seriously but they are a minority.
