RDR has mild sex scenes and in the west that is more frowned upon. While the graphical violence is also not as bad in RDR than Black Ops(sawing a guy's head off) the intended violence especially towards women(kill porstitutes and dasterdly achievement) is much worse than the mundane killings from Black Ops. There is the skinning of animals as well. So yes overall RDR is a more mature game.
lmao dude there are a couple of REALLY obvious sex scenes and nudity. these games are both quite inappropriate for an 11 year old anyway but for the most part RDR isn't that bad so i see your point.

Unlike alcohol, DVDs and other assorted age restricted content most games cannot be refused sale on suspicion of supplying to a minor.
Yes they can.
Fix'd.

I wasn't 100% yesterday, apologies for any confusion.

Any title rated by the BBFC is legally binding and you can go down for supplying the game to a minor. However, games rated by PEGI (i.e. most of them) aren't legally biding at all. But, as I'm sure you're going to be quick to reply both Red Dead and Black Ops are both rated 18 by the BBFC. So, bleh...

Again, I was a little out of it yesterday.

it's a military family; they do have double standards.
Say what? I'm from a military family, I happen to know that on average military children are more mature when it comes to matters of violence and such.

I don't see how being a military kid affects anyones desicion on what games to buy, please enlighten me.
Don't fly off the handle. That's actually exactly what I mean: children from military families are more mature when it comes to violence. I can see how a military mom might be more inclined to buy her kid Blops and not RDR.
You'd be surprised, when someone in your family has a job that cuases them to be away for months at a time with the possibility of never coming back you tend to stray away from military shooters, try playing CoD 4 when your dads deployed to Iraq and try not to worry.

She probably doesn't understand video games enough to make a proper comparison. Just leave it at "she doesn't know what she's talking about".

I wonder when parents will learn what that little letter at the bottom of the box means?

But I remember when San Andreas came out on the Xbox... well let me tell you the story.

Well I wanted to play it and now it was on the Xbox so I can and I know way back when when we still had the ps2 I let my cousin and little sister (she was like... 8ish then) play GTA 3 just to keep them quite and stop complaining that I don't let them play games. Anyway San Andreas was coming out on the Xbox and I had little cash but I knew my sister liked to play it so I said "Hey little sis GTA is coming out on the xbox tomorrow, why don't you ask mum to take you go get it after school, you get out earlier than me?

sis: "ok"

I was so thrilled that it worked and that she actually came home with it, I only wish I was there to see the look on the clerk's face when this young girl slaps down a copy of GTA saying she wants this. The best part was that my mum was ok with it.

Most parents are fucking stupid. On this level, give it no further thought.
This.
I mean... I'm not even sure what else to say other than what this guy said. >_>
that's all I got, I honestly can't think of any reason why someone would think this way. As a gamer, when I hear conversation of this nature, I usually give input, granted they express some sort of desire for it. I often find myself giving people advice on what games to play/ what games are okay for younger kids.

Well comparatively the sex scenes in RDR are nothing compared to actual porn or anything found by searching in google with safe search off. I do see your point but there is an 18 rating on it. Well atleast the parent is deciding not to get the game a child.

RDR has boobies
Fat, saggy, Mexican boobies. And pubes.
Made worse when you didn't know it was coming. Abraham Reyes and saggy boobs is not what I wanted when I just turned up to shoot some people in the face.

Yeah everyone knows about the sickening homophobia found on live games of RDR and for which it has now become renowned.

Wait a tick..

Because it's a Rockstar game. Thank's to Jack Thompson people tend to see Rockstar as more Adult games than others.
What ever happened to that nutjub anyway?
He got disbarred and cant practice Law anymore last I heard.

OT: Probably cause its a CoD game based on the Black Ops mission of the US, so either its Historically accurate, shows the fails of America, and/or is because all his friends will be playing it online.

I dont know, I dont think you should buy either for the kid unless he can handle it, and something tells me this kid was able to handle RDR (call it a hunch) so this is pretty much BS.

I'm sorry but I am 99% sure Red Dead Redemption has a lot more artistic merit than CoD ever has and ever will have.

I overheard a very odd thing today in GAME store today, while browsing through the pre-owned games i heard a youngish lad ask his mum if he could buy Red Dead Redemption. Obviously he was under-age and i was kinda shocked to hear the mum say "No, its too old for you, your 11". I started to cheer as i thought that maybe, just maybe some parents actually use age ratings and that things like California and Jack Thompson can shut up and jump in some form of toxic death pit.

However what came next was quite odd, the 11 year old replied "I know, but you still bought me Black Ops" to which she replied with "Yeah, but that's different". That sentence has kinda stuck with me now, how on earth is it different?! Both are rated as 18 games due to graphic violence, swears and other stuff, how can one be "different". I thought it could be done due to popularity and advertisement but both are the same. RDR has won loads of GOTYs, had loads of adverts here in UK and was top of the charts at one point i believe. Its the same for Black Ops (minus the GOTYs THANK GOD)So i ask you, the smart otters of The Escapist to help me make sense of this quite weird statement, is there some profound answer or is this women just an idiot.
I wonder - maybe she does have a more nuanced view. RDR has sex in it, Black Ops probably doesn't. One is about certain morals she probably wants to express, the other is not. Perhaps she actually researched this. Maybe this should be applauded.

Or not. Thing is, she made a decision on to games that would probably be identical, based on the cover and rating alone. She was able to discern between the two and decide what is better for her kid.

Or she probably just used "that's different" as an excuse as most parents do to justify seemingly inconsistent actions to their children.

Maybe she doesn't want to buy her son a lot of games. That shit is expensive.
Exactly, if I'd just bought my son one £40 game I wouldn't be in a hurry to buy him another
