I don't need to know the intricacies behind it to know that it's easier and far cheaper to make polygons than HD sprites. That's common knowledge. I wasn't looking into insulting you but your "why didn't they do real time damage like MK" was one of the most ridiculous complains about BB I've ever heard and showed a seeming lack of understanding of the labor that your request would entail.
Because it's easy to make a generally decent-looking pixel art it is important when the especially good ones are made, sprites like those in Disgaea 4 for example are not the same as the generic anime sprites one would find on deviant.
MvC3 relies too heavily on flashy stuff, it's more about hype than style which is what Blazblue does. MK's way is ultra-realistic, which is sort of cliche for it due to it being the "western fighter" and all, but beyond that there's really nothing interesting about the stiff animations and the lack of fluidity in the game. (notice, I'm not talking about the animations as animation, i'm talking about the gameplay, about how it feels to play the game, not about how it looks as a video)
What? I didn't say BlazBlue should have real time battle damage like MK9, that'd be retarded and wouldn't fit the game at all. (Not that it wouldn't be possible with a little work) I SAID that the real time battle damage in MK9 is very impressive.
Ok, so if you think it's easier and cheaper to do 3D animation I have an idea. I'll go to photoshop and make some 2D sprites, and you go buy a copy of 3DS Max and make some 3D ones. Then we'll see who get's further after one week, and who gets more praise for the work they actually do. Tell ya what, I'll even throw in the battle damage you think is impossible.
And once you get to the point where a giant 4 armed tiger man is shooting fire out of his mouth I think the "ultra-realistic" description falls apart alittle bit.
Like I said I haven't played much of MK9, I was more into Soul Calibur, so obviously I was talking about how the game looks. The way the animations string together, and how the gameplay flows seamlessly from round to round. I can't say much about the actual gameplay, but I'm sure you know less about it as I do. Gameplay wise the two games are incomparable, however MK9's animation relies alot less on being flashy then BlazBlue's does, and is much more impressive from a technical standpoint. (Though not nearly as flashy as MvC3 of coarse)
