Blizzard Starting To Go "Hardcore" On Heart of the Swarm

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty may have been a huge release, but it was only one third of Blizzard's seqilogy, the second of which the studio is now working on "hardcore."

When Blizzard StarCraft [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/86756-Blizzcon-08-StarCraft-2-Trilogy-Confirmed], misunderstanding cries were uttered. Now that StarCraft II has been released, people seem to be relaxing as they realize the scope of what Blizzard is going for. Next up is StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, which Blizzard says it is now going at "hardcore."

The second game of the trilogy will follow the Zerg, an alien species totally different from the human-like Terrans of Wings of Liberty. Blizzard's executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo talked to MTV Multiplayer about the upcoming game (and its eventual sequel) and how it'll differ from the first StarCraft II. The studio is sticking with a branching mission structure, but is "going to do some things that are pretty different based on the races themselves," he says. "We really want to make each racial experience feel true to the race and feel interesting, so I think there will be some similar stuff and some stuff that really diverges to make sense for the race."

Pardo says that each new game will feel like a sequel from a single-player point of view, while from a multiplayer perspective they'll feel like expansions sets. As for when we'll see Heart of the Swarm, that's a silly question to ask Blizzard, but he did give an indication of the current progress of the game.

"We're just now getting serious about breaking ground on [Heart of the Swarm]," Pardo revealed. "We always have a lot of ideas and there's been some design work on it, but hardcore art and programming is just now starting to begin. It's too early to estimate, but as soon as we can get them out there, we'd love to."

I say give the StarCraft world at least a year before making it go crazy again, Blizzard. I'm personally more of a Diablo [http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-III-Pc/dp/B00178630A] guy anyway.

Maybe this means that they'll make the Zerg suck less in the multiplayer department...

Screw that! I want my new campaign now or next summer.

Because I could play through next weekend pretty easily into the last week of my summer break.

Next summer for the same reason. Lack of school.

So will one of these Expansion Sequels come with an update allowing for LAN play and the like?

I know I may not be the first one to say this, but I hope we won't have to wait another 12 years for "Heart of the Swarm". ;) Still, considering that the mechanics of the game and the graphics are taken care, it would be nice to have some semblance of a release date. Then again, maybe they're trying to come up with a storyline which isn't as predictable as "Wings of Liberty"'s... Don't get me wrong, though, I like StarCraft! =D

So the rest of us should adapt to your schedule? How about the rest of us who work year long? XD We manage to find a way!

I'm not sure what they're really hoping to achieve with these. I mean, I'll buy them if they're very cheap, but the Zerg and Protoss campaigns are kind of inevitably bad since both those factions are devoid of good story sort of necessarily, the Zerg being a Hive Mind and the Protoss being a stereotype of vague culture-less aliens. Combine that with the disappointing story of WoL, and things aren't looking good.

And Blizzards "Ready when it's Ready" policy is ringing a bit annoying, since it how can it be that hard to predict the release of something which isn't even a new game?

I just hope they don't turn into IW and Activision with the "MW" success and then the next campaigns are shit.

Remind me again how:

Suddenly switching sides and becoming an ally with your enemy in order to turn Sarah Kerrigan back to a human
Was predictable?

Great, so now that they have basically most of the game already set out and just need to come up with a new storyline, and considering they are now going "hardcore" on it, I guess we can expect Heart in what? 5-6 years!
Hurry the fuck up Blizzard. SC2 was oh sooo not worth the wait so youve still got a lot to prove.
The wait is only as long as you make it.... It's like that episode of south park where Cartman can't wait for the Wii.

Misunderstanding cries? I don't think anyone misunderstood. They just didn't want to buy 3 games to get one games worth of story.

Although I'll forgive them a little if they use the extra time to make the dialogue less painful.

Okay, this reminds me a little bit of Halo 3: ODST...

"Hey! Here's this brand new campaign with brand new characters and a brand new story! Along with a brand new multiplayer mode and new maps for the multiplayer!"

Maybe it's just me. Then again, I haven't played Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty yet, sooo..... yeah. As soon as I get me a better running computer, I'll play it.
