Pardo says that each new game will feel like a sequel from a single-player point of view, while from a multiplayer perspective they'll feel like expansions sets.
Yeah, a $60 expansion pack...
Man, I remember when expansion packs were half the price of the original game...
I'm getting really tired of reading the "YOU'RE GETTING RIPPED OFF BLIZZARD FANBOY HAHAHAHA!" argument. It's not only presumptuous (because it's partly subjective OH SNAP), it's often wrong.
Let me address the pricing argument: Fun fact: Brood War retailed at 40 dollars back in 99'; the same price as the original Starcraft.
Adjusting for the inflation of the US Dollar (roughly 50% markup from 12 years ago thanks to Bush-era-economics. Based partly on the increase in minimum wage.), $40 * 1.5 = $60.
Well holy shit. Isn't that somethin?
Oh, and Blizzard wasn't the only company using this pricing system in retail. Microsoft's Age of Empires 2 and the Conquerors Expansion retailed at 40 and 40 on launch.
Even the Quake 2 expansion packs retailed at 35 bucks. Only slightly cheaper than the base game.
And this was everywhere in my region. Not just at Best Buy, Babbages's or Wal-Mart. But EVERYWHERE in my region.
So, pardon me if I think the "Prices were so much lower 10 years ago" argument is a bit misleading, because in my market, that was definitely NOT the case.
Now, I'm not trying to be unreasonable here; There is some merit to these complaints. Namely, the multiplayer nut will probably feel very cheated to play with the new units (which alter the metagame). Taken from that standpoint, yeah, I can see them calling ripoff; they're paying for content they don't need.
The same argument cannot be made for those of us who LIKE the single player content and so we fall into the land of subjective reasoning.
Activision-Blizzard might be flat-out greedy, but lets remember to keep the prices in perspective here. Retailers will always give you the shaft on pricing, but this "outrage" has been, and will continue to be largely exaggerated trolling fodder.
But fuck me for at least trying to bring an ounce of sense into this debacle.
