I'm kind of upset about this, because I'm a big fan of the Diablo series, I was really looking forward to Diablo 3, but I can't support any game that requires an always-on connection. For one thing, my connection is too unreliable to make it practical (one of the reasons I loathe Steam) and two, I'm not willing to financially support a system that so openly disregards me as a gamer.

But god dammit, I want that game so bad.

Sometimes sticking to your principles really blows goats.
Yeah, no shit. 11 long years, and now I can't even play it.

Seriously, we need to find a way to let them know exactly how displeased the base at large is with the recent announcements.

Nothing to do with DRM?

Being asked to believe that is just insulting. Fuck you too, buddy.
This is the most succinct, best response I've read in this thread. You are the Thread Champion sir. Enjoy it.

OT: So, not only do they want to insult me as a gamer, but they then want to turn and insult me as an intelligent human being. That's cool. This was the only thing that was making me think of taking down my Activision blockade. That decision was real easy to make suddenly.

Can someone please explain to me what the big deal is?

I mean, a high speed internet connection is like a standard living need for any gamer. In my opinion, anyone who has heard of Diablo 3 or is interested in playing it will have a fairly stable internet connection.

What are the complaints for, who the heck does not have an internet connection, lol? It's not like you need to be worried about lag, you're not playing multiplayer, you're just connected to the internet.

What's the issue here?
Blizzard isn't known for it reliable servers. If you played WoW for an extended period of time you would know that. Of course it is getting better.
Tuesday is maintenance day, that = no playing D3.
Even DSL has micro stutters in the connection, and depending on how sensitive their connection servers are you could get disconnected for no reason.

It isn't. battle.net acts as the DRM.

Hold the phone, don't 99% of games on steam work just fine w/o an active connection (once they're dl'd and installed?), unless it's said they need one, specifically, in the system requirements.

They seem to work for me??

I don't mean to be daft, but could you expand on where you encountered this problem on steam? I've only ever seen it on some of the 'always on' Ubisoft DRM titles. Is it also on Valve's titles? Or...???

______

On topic, as I recall, Diablo 2's arrangement of open and closed battle.net worked out just fine to stop hacking / exploiting AND gave players a choice, in the matter of internet reliance...

Their new design decision is just asinine, given their prior well-functioning formula.

I think they are just surprised all their loving cash cows are actually saying something negative about D3
1st wow bleeds 300,000 subscribers a quarter and now people are openly stating they wont accept a purely online game with a shitty auction house feature.

Its almost as if we had an opinion based on free will and sentient thought...

That doesn't seem like a big enough reason. I really, really doubt they'll make the game unavailable for an entire day of the week. ...
Tuesday is Blizzard maintenance day when ALL of their servers go down for maintenance, and depending on what they are doing the website and web forums go down as well. It happens almost every week. From early morning until mid afternoon.

What a joke. He didn't see it coming? Suuuure. And he says that it has nothing to to with DRM? I'm not buying that. If it's not DRM, why does it need to have a constant connection? It's a single-player game.

I'm telling you... developers just keep on making worse and worse decisions (for the players, at least). Skyrim with all of it's crap; Battlefield 3 apparently only being available on Origin; now, this.

"And, at the end of the day, how many people are going to want to do that?"
ME!

I want a fun single player experience, now-a-days, the online experience is 50% idiots, 45% griefers, 4% idiot griefers and 1% helpful knowledgeable friendly players.

Who wants to fight through the 99% of people you don't want to play with to find that 1 in a million person that it would actually be fun to play the game with? Just look at WoW, the VAST majority of people you find within the game, are moronic, bigoted, arrogant jerks.

No Thanks Blizz, I'll just avoid Diablo 3 altogether.

CORRECTION!

When I play Dawn of War 2 and my steam goes down I can't even touch the single player without reconnecting my steam first.

Steam is the bane of offline single player gaming.

Was going to get this game, in till I found out about the constant online thing. Net in NZ is to sketchy to put up with for a single player game besides I pay per GB, I don't mind raking up the net bill for a multiplayer session but for a single player game - No bloody way.
