While this might work it would also remove all creativity allowed to me in name creation and leave me with a boring name. That means my parents will have won....

Hooray for more IRL kills over an epic axe.
Ha I was just about to post that. It's not a good thing when reality follows satire is it?

I didn't use Blizzard forums before and I certainly won't now. As far as I can see this will just encourage people to troll on my facebook page rather than a gaming forum which sounds like an awful idea to me.

To all the people concerned about people seeing their real name

A)Post on other forums

B)You are not the only one in the world with your name. You do know that right?

C)I didn't see the "We will also broadcast your email address to everyone else just cause we are dicks" in there any where so where did that come from?

Isn't this an invasion of privacy? I'm sure this has to be illegal somehow
Hahahaha, how is it illegal when you gave them your name yourself, willingly? There was no place on any of the TOS or EULA that said your name and email address would be kept confidential.

If you don't want your name and email posted, don't post.
There are however laws that prohibit them from forcing you to post your name publicly to use their service. There will be lawsuits and the names will be removed.

Alright, well that removes any chance I'll ever again post anything on an official Blizzard forum (no I never troll, just find this ridiculous). Way to promote MMO-Champion I guess! :p

I hope it's not like my X-box name, I got a letter to Mr Biggus Dickus. But yeah it'll work to an extent shame it doesn't get rid of those irritating gold seller spam bots.

Just use a pair of fake names. Seriously, Blizzard is forcing you to forsake one big-ass right since we hit the internet. Being a total jerk without anything to trace you to your real name or whatsoever.

We will see how this works out though.
And seriously how is using a fake name different from just going on with nickname/character name?
Do you people even listen to yourselves?
Only ones that it will affect will be honest and casual gamers, people who write guides for the community and people who just enjoy forums, that do not want to troll at all. Their names will be made public. Female players already feel uneasy about everyone knowing which characters are played by actual woman, with e-mail and name there is much much bigger chance for someone to find you. It is very bad decision, it has no benefits for the community as whole but may bring harm to few of innocent bystanders.

Why show the user's real name? Why not ask the user to come up with a nickname and just use that nickname as the only one that the user may use to post on their forums?

Much simpler, far less invasive and it removes lvl 1 trolling problems too. TBH if this goes through I can just see their forum trolling suddenly shift from lvl 1 'shitfaced cockmaster' style to 'hahahaha your name is "Dick" oh wow! You must've been abused as a child!'. An upgrade from 4chan trolling to Something Awful trolling.

You can call that progress if you like, but I still consider it to be douchebaggery, high-browed or low-browed.

Yea, I'm pretty mixed about this. Their goal is a valid one that I can support, nobody likes trolls. However, I don't like having every idiot on the forums knowing my real name. I may be a bit paranoid about it but I doubt I will be posting on the WoW forums in the future.

My money says they dont go through with it. If you check out the forums theres a 200+ page thread full of people against the change.

See, the interesting part for me is where I see people saying they won't buy the products. Er... how about you just don't post on the forum? This won't change how you're seen in game, only attaching a name in a forum which is, right now - face it - a cesspool of filth. A hive of scum and villainy.

In other words, I really don't see how this could possibly make the B.net forums WORSE :p

Edit: That said, I wonder if the Blue posters will have the same thing happen to them. If they'll have to post with their real names too...

DAMN. eliminate anonymity, and see what happens. I kinda like this idea.

Fuck that, if I have to give up personal information to play their games (If I'm reading that right Real-ID will be your BNet login) then I won't be buying their games. It is none of their business what my name is, where I live, or any of that shit, the only thing they should care about is that I bought their product.
Doing a little reading on it, the only information being displayed is your real name. That is not going to be your BNet login, your login will be a username/password as it is now. They will not be distributing your location.

That said, name/address/etc are things you would have to give to sign up for a WoW account anyhow, so they wouldn't be collecting more info from you on top of that.

Likely, you will have to register a Bnet account, complete with this information in order to access and play other games online.

In so far as how it pertains to interactions in an online community, I'm interested to see what happens. Force people to interact without the security blanket of total anonymity, and see how people respond - would civility improve among users of their message boards? I certainly hope so.

Funnily enough this policy violates their own code of conduct
Distribution of Real-Life Personal Information

This category includes:

* Releasing any real-life information about other players or Blizzard Entertainment employees

If a player is found to have participated in such actions, he/she will:

* Be permanently banned from the Battle.net forums
Unless names don't count at as personal information now.

The only people against this are people that troll and flame I'm guessing.

What people have a problem with is that they aren't man enough to hate on people with their real name right on the page.

Also in response to someone who posted a user could track you down and kill you lol, that's unlikely even if they had the means to find you and let's not forget how many people have the same name as you unless you have broadcasted where you live to people online which is a mistake in itself.
