This seems like a good idea to me. Not sure why anyone would have a problem with others knowing their real name.
Seeing how knowing someone's first and last name is essentially giving someone else the tools to find any and all information about that person...

This just screams, "BAD IDEA!" at the top of its lungs.

Get in an argument with someone on the forums? No problem! Just use their first and last name to Google the rest of their info and cyber stalk them for the rest of their lives. Why stop there? Knowing someone's first and last name is essential to steal their identity, bank account info, address, contacts, etc.
I'm an actor, novelist and welsh snooker player. Apparently. Or I might be... Or I might not! You never know!

CONSPIRACY!

Anonymity is the main ingredient of internet. This will fail hard. No one in their right mind will agree to this.

I am pulling this directly from a thread on the WoW forums. I haven't verified the information myself, but I have no reason to doubt it.

A Blue poster, Bashiok, posted his real name in a RealID thread to show that there was no cause for alarm.

Within minutes, his phone number, names of all members of his family, home address and facebook page were posted on WoW Riot. 4chan's /v/ currently has a thread about this: they are prank calling him, ordering pizzas, mailing questionable sex toys, sending threats, etc.

I feel sorry for that guy. He was probably asked to post his name by his employer. Still, should help Blizzard understand why this is a terrible idea.
I wish I could say this surprises me in the least. Would forcing everyone to disclose their identity online put a stop to things like this? Only if the trolls couldn't find a way to use false identities or even hijack those of innocent real people. I think we all know that they could, and would.

Real ID is a completely voluntary and optional level of identity that keeps players connected across all of Battle.net. When you and a friend mutually agree to become Real ID friends, you'll have access to a number of additional features that will enrich your social gaming experience in new and exciting ways.

doesn't sound that bad because of the optional part

It's not going to be optional on the forums after release of SC2 and Cataclysm, though. Every post will display your actual FirstName.LastName. And that's what all the uproar is about.
i don't use there forums so no harm done to me

I dislike that 4chan often does these very impersonal and cruel stunts just for laughs, but... I'm a little mixed about this one because they are proving my and many other people's points about why this is such a bad idea. I may think 4chan is sick for going after this guy in real life, but it might get the result that I want.

You know what the best part is? According to the Bashiok's twitter, 4chan has got the wrong guy. Which means that someone, who may have never have even been involved with WoW or Blizzard, is having what must be the worst day of his life because of this policy.

He could just be saying they have the wrong guy because he wants to get the 4chan people off his back. In any case, I find this whole case to be an awful example of why this policy is a horrible idea.

Yea I won't be using them if they implement this change either, but I'm sure you understand why it's a bad idea.
I've been using my real name for years now hasn't really affected(right word?) me but yes i can see the down side to it

I must be reading this wrong, all they want to do is use your name as your forum name, and everyone here is in a rage over it?

Has anyone stopped and thought, well it's just a name. I mean we aren't mages, people can't hold power over us once they know our name.

Plus you can just fake it...

Forgive me if I would rather not be stabbed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101031-Counter-Strike-Knife-Fight-Leads-to-Real-Life-Stabbing]. Counter-Strike doesn't even give out your real name.

I'm actually keeping my eye on this right now.

Some people pointed out that it might be the wrong guy, but one person pointed out that is a random man's life was kinda-fucked up, it would be Blizzard's fault because they made people give out their names.

And if it is the right guy /v/ are using him a martyr to prove this is a fucking stupid idea
Yeah, in following this up I've come across the same information. And seriously, that scenario is even WORSE in my mind. Imagine that you're Citizen McPersonface, just going about your life, and all of a sudden your phone is ringing off the hook with prank calls, people are driving by your house staring at you and you've got a pizza delivery every three minutes. Why? You'll never know unless you stumble over a particular thread on the Internet.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I think it's time to cleanse the world and give the cockroaches a go at this whole "civilization" thing.

I don't know how much I like that, I like having control over how much info of my real life i give out.
I can see where they are coming from, the WoW forums are a cesspit, one of the worst on the 'net, but damn I'm not giving out my real name on an internet forum.
