Err...I mean Bloodrayne Betrayal.

This is my biggest gaming-related surprise ever, this game is so very awesome, this is the third post I've made about it in the last 10 minutes, in three different forums. Everyone who ever liked castlevania (SotN specifically) or oldschool difficult 2D sidescrollers should go and try out the demo right away.

They should have called it "Redemption"...or maybe they just betrayed their roots and became actually a good damn series. The game has nothing in common with what we already know or think we know about that series, no sexploitation crap, cool 2D pixel art, hard as hell gameplay with speed and strategy and DEPTH! Who would have thought.

Played the demo, it seemed fairly crappy. Very button mashy.
That's early on cause the enemies are on the easy side and there's no stage hazards. It just hooks you if you're into that style of play right away.

Did you try doing air combos and things like infecting and detonating your foes? You don't need to just use the standard combo all the time, also use the charge hit and shooting stuff kills em in 1-2 shots so it speeds things up too since bullets go through everything, not just one target.

Yeah, I got a general handle of it. I did manage to finish the demo, so that speaks well for it, but if I was ever going to get it it would have to be when it's on sale, doesn't seem worth the full price for me.

see this is 2d devil may cry, really not much like metroidvania at all.

You seem to have gone "Its 2d platforming and she has a melee weapon! Of course its like Castlevania!"

As someone who likes metroidvania games and hates 'spectacle' fighters (points to yahtzee for the term, not my fault) - this falls in the latter camp.

Well, I got a PSN message saying I could get it for 12 bucks and not 15 since I tried the demo (I actually had the demo downloaded for weeks but I didn't bother with it till today since...well...it was Bloodrayne lol) so that's how I ended up trying and getting it and it's sort of a sale. You may get one of those too, who knows. It said it was only going to last for a week though.

I disagree, if you've played Symphony of the night you will see tons of similarities.

The hack and slash gameplay isn't the focus, it's more about the 2D platforming and strategy. The combos are just there to remove the repetitive elements old castlevania games had. You can kill pretty much anything in the demo by just poking it once and drinking it's blood, that's not DMC at all lol.

Then we will have to disagree. Having played everything on the wikipedo big list of castlevania games except rondo of blood, the remake, and lords of s*&^, the reboot, my honest opinion is this demo felt a lot more like playing devil may cry than castlevania and i sure wont be paying money for this someday.

Played it on 360, so the chance of me getting a PSN message is fairly slim.

Well, I doubt this was a ps3-only offer so you may get a live arcade offer instead lol. The contents which is what matters should be the same.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I would have gotten it but I don't trust my 360 to last much longer so I don't buy games for it anymore, Im not surprised its good, it was done by wayforward and they do pretty awesome 2d side scrollers.

It was pretty cool but it didn't have nearly the depth of any Castlevania ever made.

And it doesn't even come close to SOTN and it's plethora of goodies and upgrades and upside down castles.
Definitely, it's more old-school, it lacks the action rpg elements introduced in SotN, it's more like the older ones, Dracula X and before. It still does have a ton of things inspired by SotN as far as things besides the gameplay go. That sound attack the white raven does for example was an instant reminder of the bat form's sonar.
