Beyond level one , I think they at least serve two purposes:

*Giving the environment a distinct sense of wildlife

*Making you feel like a badass when you can take on the little bastards who were once difficult without any problems
Exactly, I really enjoyed killing skeevers in Skyrim once I was a high level. One hit kills with even the weakest weapons was fun. Mashing them to a pulp with my fists was even better.

Aren't they there to provide a safe fight for NPC's to fight, hence letting you think they're decent, so you'll run to them when being chased, expecting them to save you before getting burned to a crisp alongside your hopes and dreams?

Or is that just my experience?

Edit: I also read the OP as botflies and now I can't stop scratching my head. I hate you OP.

Aye, in fact I recall I was playing Fallout 3 and I came across ths building full of pretty challenging robots. Any-who I get to about halfway through the building and I get the option to freeze every robot in the building. One that was done, I PROCEEDED TO BEAT AN IMMOBILISED ROBOT TO DEATH WITH MY FISTS. Felt like such a badass.

I think its a benchmark for how far you've come. You struggle with them at the beginning, the blast the crap out of them later on. The new enemies provide the challenge, the old enemies provide the satisfaction of progression and hitting something very, very hard.

If there was no opposition but supermutant masters with miniguns; wouldn't you get just a teeny weeny bit bored ?

They're filler enemies, like a lot of other people have said. However, I feel that they have a certain lore-importance, they give the game more credibility by supporting the themes and ideas. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but for me it's a much nicer idea than them just being 'filler'.

Pretty much this, for some reason I just love killing skeletons and a radroach or two.

The poor thing was probably crying little robot tears. !ts tortured soul trapped within the prison of its own immobilized body... Sounds fun!

For the 1xp of course.

And the arm training in Skyrim's case.
Ugh, I'll attest to that. I let a pack of wolves beat on me for ten minutes to get a Heavy Armor perk

You mean this guy?

That too. They included that character in Honest Hearts as a reference (wit the Wild Wasteland trait) to the mod that actually adds "Two bears high-fiving" as a response to Doc Mitchell's blot test in the beginning of New Vegas. I laughed pretty hard when I saw that tribal in Honest Hearts.

If you do wind up getting more into New Vegas, bloatflies do serve a purpose: food. Bloatfly sliders are good eatin' and easy to make.

But yeah, radroaches are just for atmosphere. Protip: if you waste ammo on a radroach, you're doing it wrong (even at level 1). Unequip your weapon and VATS death-stomp ftw!

Well it should've thought of that, before it started shooting at me.

Besides, it's spent the last few hundred years mosying around in a building all alone, and would've continued to just that without the mosying part had I not put it out of it's misery. They were probably tears of joy at that point.
