I live in Sydney, so I'd probably vote for an alien invasion of Prague, Deli, or Stoke-On-Trent... :)
Fuck me dude. What would be the point of blowing up Stoke? Have you driven through it? It looks shit enough as it is.

OT: Yes, it is kind of boring to see New York constantly in films, but I haven't seen it so much in my choice of games, so it really doesn't bother me. I just live in hope that films like District 9 will start a trend for seeing more interesting Earth locations in the media.

I vote for an invasion of Rochefourchat. It's gonna be epic.
That, or Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, just for the mission briefing.

Yeah I totally know what you mean. Wouldn't it be cool if they made a game where aliens invaded mombassa or something?
That was actually a VERY Well-Learned decision on Bungie's part. I cringe at all the Sci-Fi games that show New York (and other American cities) having a Space Elevator (I'm looking at you Front Mission Evolved) When Kenya is one of the few countries in the world, close enough to the Equator to even support a Tethered Space Elevator supported by a Satellite in Geo-stationary Orbit. That's not Plot Armour, that's just scientifically Inaccurate. I think there were some Historical reason or it being Mombasa as well, but I forget.

OT: For better or for Worse, We are living in (speculatively, Ass-end of) the "Age of America". Every Piece of mass media has to be either ABOUT America, FOR America, or at least FRIENDLY to American sensibilities. If it isn't ANY of those, it will be "received poorly by the target audience"....which isn't true, it's just what Publishers believe for whatever reason. They never stop to think that it's actually quite insulting to propose that ALL Americans are too backwards and illiterate to know WHERE Sydney IS!

It's fucking Bullshit, yes..... but it's true.
I'm curious...are you American? Because if you are, you seem to fall into Category 4 (Decent people, pretend to be Canadians when abroad). What you say is very true, though. A couple of years ago, there were fires in Queensland, and people emailed Yahtzee (in Brisbane) asking him if he was alright.

And I loved the fact that Halo 2 and 3 were set in Mombassa! Not only that, the Halo series does a very good job of presenting an integrated, multicultural future society (Especially in the books).

OT: I just saw the ME3 announcement trailer at the VGA's, and I thought it was London. Oh well. On second thought, a game that took place in London would be all kinds of badass.

No, I'm not American. And Americans have categories? Are these categories categories....or Internet categories?

No, these are my categories.

1) Yank
2) Redneck
3) California Blonde
4) Decent Person

And that's because Assassin's Creed is awesome (maybe it helps that they're Canadian?)

...Oookay... Which one is Dexter Morgan(from your avatar)? Certainly not "decent person" by any tangible law of society. although, I guess that IS the benefit of a personal list. "To hell with Society(!)" and such....

They had to make do, I don't think America really existed then.

OT: I always wanted them to do more stuff in Britain. And not just the obligatory blow up parliament and Big Ben. I want to fight my way through zombies/aliens/robots/any combination of the above across the Humber Bridge. Unfortunately since I have to explain to British people from anywhere more south than Birmingham what the humber is, then it'll completely confuse international audiences.

I love that little "info bit" in AC2 about Ezio's then-GF, [something] Vespucci, the little sister of Amerigo Vespucci (Aka, the namesake of the entire fucking pair of Continents). I found it quite funny.

That's the thing though, it's NOT like people are unwilling to accept locales they are unfamiliar with. Okay, so almost none of the players will know the area of Humber where the Hypothetical game is set. SO? Do people "know" Cyrodil, Or Skyrim, Or Ferelden? I'm not implying that Northern (or middle; I obviously don't know where the Humber is) Britain is Fictional. I'm just saying that.....What does it MATTER, that we don't know about the place?

Why should that stop developers from basing their games on more interesting and exotic locales then "New York" and "faux New York" (as is the case for GTA4) Do you get what I'm saying?

I think the fiasco with Manchester Cathedral in Resistance 1 really made developers more cautious about world locales. Not that I like it, tbh, I would rather see more games that took place on the other side of the pond.

Because the world has bee brainwashed to believe the USA is the hub of mankind, the cradle of civilisation.

If you ask an American where Sydney is, 7 out of 10 of them will think you're asking about a chick.

Movies such as Independence Day, Cloverfield, the Marvel Superhero movies, disaster movies such as Deep Impact, Armageddon, War of the Worlds etc, all show that Aliens and malevolence in general are only attracted to the USA and only the president and Americans can save the day.
Don't forget Tokyo, it has had it's fair share of movie shit storms hit it. In all seriousness I wouldn't call it "Brainwashing" as much as the simple fact that so much of the entertainment industry is in The United States that they play to the home field advantage. Why it has to be New York is another question, and to answer that it's partly because New yorkers are Loud and arrogant and also because the Nealson Rating company has pretty much forsaken the rest of the Country. So most demographic projections are very New England/Eastern seaboard centric. Personally I would like it if productions explored more of the world. I think the Earth part of ME3 should be based in Hong Kong

As for the superhero thing it's because most of the early writers aren't as creative as we all give them credit for and based their worlds on their neighborhood. Think about it, if you look at his work critically and compared to other writers, Stan Lee is kind of a hack. His genius is in his characters and his characters are only genius because other people have taken them and done some amazing things.

Finally, Concerning The United States as a setting, there is a lot of beautiful country side West of the Mississippi that isn't Texas, and doesn't have to be reserved for Cowboy and Indian pieces.

Is it just me or is everyone started moaning about new york always being destroyed because Yahtzee said it in his crysis 2 review?
I started complaining when Bioware announced New York as a possible location.
if it really bothers you THAT much, then why bother playing it? There are plenty of games more awesome than Crysis 2
