Why do people hate hd and blu ray dvds so much? You always hear that hd is useless. What is the problem with having more of a movie theater style experience? Blu ray dvds are more costly tho.{I remember seeing dvds costing 25 to 30 a pop when they came out.]If you look online you can find brand new blu ray movies for 20 to 22 bucks.{about the price of a new dvd.} People said that dvds are no better than vhs. They also said that dvds would never take over the vhs's place in movie watching at home. But what format do most people watch movies on today? dvds Why do people hate the new format of movie watching? Give me your thoughts on the subject please.

Actually...the VHS was doomed when the CD-Rom kicked in, so when the DvD showed up no one cared for the VHS.

Also not everyone hates HD or Blu Ray. Its that the differences from regular DvD to HD/Blu Ray are so "pointless" you will hardly ever miss it. Not to mention the fact to get the most out of HD and Blu Ray you need very expensive TV's.

And quick pointless trivia: The VHS only became famous cause the Porn industry choose the VHS to release its videos.

And in my opinion(and many peoples opinion) spending that kind of money on a TV, when the TV(the content, TV series/shows/etc) itself is being replaced at full force by the Internet, no one apart from high tech freaks are going to buy such TV's.

I was wanting a 1080P hd tv since my 720p is on its last leg. It is like 4 years old. I will get one when i can afford it.

They hate it because its expensive. They have to buy a new blu-ray player plus (possibly) a new HD tv and HD cables to get the benefits of Blu-ray and the Blu-rays are more expensive then DVDs. As it stands, its a lot of money and people tend to stick with the less expensive but as not good when it costs a lot. Eventually, the price will go down a bit and people will start checking it out.

On a side note, what exactly do you do with all that space on a Blu-ray? Its like a massive dump for data. The movie is only so much space, and then you have a big canyon to fill. Someday there'll be more bonus features on your disk then movie.

And you get nothing out of it if you have a regular, standard definition TV.

Also, as someone who rents Blu Rays regulary, i'd say the real gain in quality isn't very consistent. It's not even about the age of the films (Vanishing Point looks amazing on Blu Ray), it's just that some movies look much better while others don't, due to things like the graininess of the film the movie was imprinted on.

And imo it's not even about what kind of movie it is. Of the Blu-Rays i actually own, Fight Club and surprisingly Iron Man don't really look that much better (in Case of Iron Man, the effect shots look better, while the "live action" footage doesn't really) while Tropic Thunder looks surprisingly awesome and crisp.

Of course, this uneven quality was something DVDs also had in the beginning (and even now there are some DVDs with bad image quality), but they did not ask you to buy a new TV...

WRONG Unless you require a 48 inch screen...I have a nice HD 32 Inch tv with 1080P...only 400$
However its not often that you find anything lower than 40 inches with 1080P
I would be happy with a 32 inch tv but i would like a bigger one than 40 inches tho.

Cause they're useless. When the DVD came out, the VHS was ruined because it was such a substantial improvent. The Blu ray on the other hand isn't.

Fat company execs just want people to pay more for the same stuff, and what do you get in return? A slight graphical enhancement. I'm sorry, but I don't see that as a strong enough selling point, especially since most of the time I can't tell the difference between a DVD or Blu ray.

This isn't the technology of the future, it's just the companys saying "Well, it's been ten years since the release of the DVD, time to make another home entertainment machine. What's that you say? We haven't made any significant improvements over dvd? Well, it doesn't matter. We'll still charge them an eye and a leg for it."

And so on and so forth.

Well the movie itself is about 4-6 times the size, then you get more interactive special features which are often of a higher quality so that takes up a fair bit of space as well.
I'm pretty sure that most of the films only use single layer discs, so that's only 25gb, quickly taken up.
One of the biggest differences for blu-ray over DVD, is the sound quality, shame I don't really have the money or the space to justify getting a good surround sound system.

People treated DVDs with the same attitude when they first came out. It's nothing new.

Some companies can't make good quality dvds today . The biggest offenders are companies that sell old cheap b movie multipacks . They dont even try to get better .

I don't see any difference between HD and normal D. The only time that I can even begin to perceive a difference is when its on one of those very beautiful very large plasma screens at best buy..../drool

.....I'm sorry I seem to have gotten lost in another "God of War played on an impossibly large TV" fantasy. Anyway, that's why I won't convert to blue ray until DVD's go the way of VHS and Beta Max. Why fork out the money for a slightly better picture when I'm perfectly happy with the one I've got. Or better yet, why fork out the money for a player that only plays one type of disc when I've still got a full collection of DVD and VHS videos that I've already got a 2 in 1 player for.

I don't think thats true.

The DvD was a huge step in technology. It was smaller than the VHS, it was more friendly user, you didn't need to rewind it, you could select everypart of the movie you wanted to watch, the image was better and so was the sound, you could select any type of subtitles you wanted, so you could buy DvD's from other countries and they would have subtitles to your language, it was easier to store, it looked pretty and many other stuff that the VHS never could have had.

It was a really big step. The Blu-Ray/HD dvd are just the same but slightly improved. Making people wander why they should trade their DvD library for Blu-Ray. Its the same crap expect with DvD you won't need to buy a new player and a good TV.

If Blu-Ray/HD Dvd was drasticly different from DvD, like Dvd was for VHS, the mass market would it notice more and not the general vibe that it gives right now which is: "Why exactly I need to replace my DvD collection with Blu-Ray?".

It made sense for VHS. You saved alot of space and you got access to tons of useless stuff like Directors commentary and behind the scenes. Not to mention complete TV series or extented versions of movies(The Lord of the Rings extended Trilogy would have never been made possible with VHS).

Blu-Ray and HD DvD offer the same thing as DvD but with so little improvement is not worth.
