I have a 52" sony bravia with a samsung BD-1600 bluray player and really the jump right now from bluray to DVD doesnt really justify paying $300 for a player and the cost of blu-ray discs. To me the images are too inconsistent. For example the bluray of The Matrix looks awesome but then the bluray for Mission Impossible 3 looks only a tad better then an unpconverted DVD

Personally I find that special effects are rather shitty these days and HD only highlights cheap CG, bad make-up or budget props. I was perfectly happy with VHS quality actually. I'm okay with DVD but the crispness of it annoys me sometimes.

As for the rest of the space on the disc, I think we all learned from DVD that 95% of 'special' features are shit and/or ruin some aspect of the movie.

I have a bunch of HD-DVDs and BluRays, but yeah, not all of them look significantly better than the DVD version. I really liked HD-DVD because you could get an HD and DVD combo where one side is the HD-DVD and the other is the regular DVD version. BluRays don't offer this (though they should be able to). I watch on my computer with a 22" LCD and cheapo 2.1 Altec Lansing speakers and I definitely like them better than regular DVDs.

I recently bought myself a 450 euro's 32"LH3000 Full HD tv, and I must say, compared to that shitty 19" thing I had for my 360, it's one héll of an improvement. Me like HD, me likes it a lot. I can't test HD films though, since I lack a Blu Ray player. Hopefully I'll get a PS3 for that at the end of the year. In the meantime, I'm very satisfied with the improvement I made games wise, and it's worth every penny.
If you have a 360, can't you play HDDVD's? Or, I know the thing at least upscales regular DVD's, right? Also, you could watch an HD movie on the tele, assuming you have some sort of on demand or ordering service.

It's just common reluctance to change. People don't like being told their technology is being rendered obsolete.

Just buy a digital version of the HD movie, put it on a memory stick or hard drive. Plug it into the 360 and hey presto! 1080P film on the TV :)

We're not hooked up to any HD telly service, and I think you need that HD DVD addon for the 360 to play HD movies on that. But Blu Ray is the format to go, so those things would be a rare (and pretty worthless) find. I don't know about upscaling though, I should check it out with Planet Earth sometimes.

Thanks, I'll try that out sometimes. But shhh, don't tell my dad! As far as he's concerned, you need a Blu Ray player for HD movies, and that would be my only excuse for getting a PS3. He doesn't want another console in the house, but if I buy it for the Blu Ray player (with the excuse: it has the best quality to price ratio of all Blu Ray players, don't know if that's true, but he doesn't know *snicker*) I might have a chance.

I don't know if any of this is true but i heard it from a friend: Blu Rays are failing because they have found a way to make DVD's have an even bigger capacity than Blu Ray and that Blu Rays are more expensive to make doesn't help either. However I don't know if any of this is true.

It will only upscale when it's connected to the TV via a HDMI cable. Witch not all 360's are capable of. But for those of us with the newer ones, upscaled DVD's look pretty amazing too.....

I am pro-HD, I am anti Blu-Ray. HD over normal tv actually is better, but Blu-Ray does not have as much an edge over HD that HD has over normal tv.

I simply don't think they give the viewer a good enough enhancement to justify paying more.

I took Media Studies at 6th Form and a part of our course was based around them, from what I learned they are not (yet) worth the extra investment.

HD makes the picture so damn weird. Its fine on TV but in movies it gives an odd 3d look to one thing while everything else isnt. Just my two cents.

I was never that interested in HD formats. I'm not going to enjoy a film more because there is supposedly a better resolution. A good film is a good film, be it on BlueRay, DVD, VHS, or terrestrially broadcast onto a 12 inch black and white portable.

Those adverts at the beginning of DVD films make me laugh though. "THIS is BluRay" They show you a load of dramatic action film footage in DVD quality and make a song and dance about how great Hi Def is!!

I wonder how many idiots saw that and thought "ZOMG! That looks fucking awwwwesome! I must get Hi-Def!"

Actually...the VHS was doomed when the CD-Rom kicked in, so when the DvD showed up no one cared for the VHS.

Also not everyone hates HD or Blu Ray. Its that the differences from regular DvD to HD/Blu Ray are so "pointless" you will hardly ever miss it. Not to mention the fact to get the most out of HD and Blu Ray you need very expensive TV's.

And quick pointless trivia: The VHS only became famous cause the Porn industry choose the VHS to release its videos.
thats why the blu ray and HD companies are fighting to get huge amounts of porn onto their particular format, because it is the biggest video market on the planet, and whatever porn is made on, the rest of the world follows. good man oliviera8 for knowing about this!
Yup the Porn industry is the industry that sells more in the realm of DvD and that assorted stuff.

And don't think this is fake or a something to laugh about. The Porn industry back then really did choose VHS to support their products. Which made VHS popular. If the Porn Industry went Betamax, you would have never heard about VHS.

Edit:bah double post sorry.
indeedy, what i was think of but couldnt remember what betamax was called...shows how well the porno business backing vhs was really...i remember watchin it on some tv show about technology progression a while back

also, in all the adverts for HD on tv, i always think wow that looks really good, but you got to know i have a non HD tv and its all about video editing and manipulating that looks good, not the fact its meant to show off how good HD is to all the people too thick to remember their tv isnt actually showing HD
