Allow me to present the three primary reasons for this nonsensical 'blurring'.

The first is the logo in the corner.

Second is the strict guidelines set in place by this.

And last, but certainly not least, is the puritanical influence on our society of this.

With their powers combined, no innocent citizen shall ever have to face the horror of gazing upon a naked, oddly shaped breast in a painting again!

Hey, it's a £115 million painting. They're not gonna show it for free.
Ah! So it's more the news broadcast only providing a 'sneak peek' rather than censoring the image?

Well then. That makes so much more sense. Good show, Fox5.

How do you even tell which part is the boob on a Picasso painting?
Uh...well, apparently, you wait for it to be put on TV, and whatever parts are blurry, are boobs - or butts, or boob-like, or butt-like, or...I dunno, vaguely rude. In a general sense. Sorta.

It's a shame he didn't label his paintings better - y'know, giant arrows with 'THIS IS A BOOB' on them pointing to the appropriate places. :)

I always wondered why male nipples are okay to show but female nipples are a big no no no protect the children. Funny because those children would have been breast fed right? That's how they work right?
Not in... Florida?... I think. They airbrushed away the male nipples on a WWE billboard.

Looks like FOX is trying to avoid silly lawsuits, and we all know how Americans love to sue.

Oh, German shampoo commercials featuring naked women, why did I take you for granted while growing up?
We're a bunch of prudes, but very much hypocritically so.

Also the west in general considers nudity a taboo, it's probably not going to change any time soon either.
Not in the West I know (which includes Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Italy). Neither in the East (which includes Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Japan), for that matter.

Frankly, none of the countries I've been to so far had much of any problems with nudity. That's just some 20 countries, not the 100-odd of them, but still ...

Hell, until a few years ago (when the law was synchronised with the remainder of the EU), you could be an actor in a hardcore porn film as soon as you hit fourteen in Germany.

Isn't that ever 14 year old boys wet dream? To be feature in hardcore porn ? I'm also guessing that they couldn't distribute said porn outside of germany? Man i have so many questions.

Was it both 14 year old boys and girls? Were both actors required to be the same age? Was acting in a porno at that age an act of pride or shame? Were people sought out to be a porn actor or did they just apply to become one and hope for the best? Did their parents need to conscent?

I have never heard about this before. I'm both appauled and curious.

Frankly: Hell if I knew, though I imagine some restrictions still applied. The keyword to look for in this case is "Jugendpornographie [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jugendpornografie]" and in particular §184c StGB, if you're looking for the specific (new since 2008) law text.

Expect to be able to read German Legalese if you want to get answers though.

America is anti breasts. Which is funny because us brits are labeled prudes. I used to date an american girl during the whole Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction episode and couldnt believe it when i sent her our daily newspaper with an unblurred picture of it. Also couldnt believe we have topless woman in our daily newspaper. :)

But, in context of this article, art shouldnt be covered up. Especially when we are encouraged to take our kids to museums and art exhibitions to show them this stuff.

It's easy to laugh, but I'm old enough to remember the damage an unrestrained nipple can do to the world.

I still have nightmares.
Rampaging across cities...
Swarms of nipples cascading through the streets like a puckered tide of chaos.
The fear borne of uncertainty, never knowing if the lactation would begin or not.
The thousands left homeless, the dead, the walking wounded...
Hundreds blinded by the merest glimpse.
Do they even still teach the 1982 nipple wars in school any more?

Maybe it's better that history forget that dark time.

Britain can be as bad as America on this regard, but personally I think it's just people being prudish. I reckon we will evetually get some sort of sensible level of acceptable nudity on daytime television. No harm in people seeing the groin of other people, it's just there could be a concern about showing full blown sex.
Oh, but what's bad about sex? Sex is a way to make new life! It's the best thing in the world! Why not show it as well?
