I know this thread has kinda been done before, I used the search bar :p
It is still an interesting subject, and I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of the various kinds of body "art" out there.
Art has quotations because there is a bit of debate over whether some of these are art or not, I'll leave that debate up to you.

NOW TO THE ACTUAL POST!
What is your opinion on body "art"? I mean anything (and not limited to):
Piercings
Tattoos
Tongue splitting
Flesh carving
Lip discing
etc.

Are you entirely against any of these? Entirely for?
Like some on yourself but not others? Hate the idea of having these, but find them cool on others?
Lemme know which ones and why :D

Piercings and tattoos I see no problem with, as long as people dont go overboard with them.
The rest I really dont get the point of, tongue splitting especially looks ridiculous and is pretty much a one way street to lispville and unemployable-town.

I love tattoos, and plan on getting some as soon as September hits. Its taken a while to get some ideas for tatts that I would like to have for the rest of my life, and where to put them, but I've finally gotten some ideas. The general rule of thumb is to get an idea, and let it sit for 4-6 months, and if you still like it, then get it. Well its been about a year for one, and more than 8 months for the other, so a tattoo'ing I will go!
I love tattoos on others, I think they're really awesome in every way :D

Piercings are not really for me... I have this irrational fear of them getting caught on everything and getting yanked out ._.
On others, I think they're really cool, but can be really weird. I don't know why, but I find it really hot when a girl has a lip piercing. Mebe cuz I love metal so much? /shrug

Tongue splitting and flesh carving are WTF imo. I don't understand why someone thought splitting their tongue would be a cool idea, or why I have seen at least 5 people (usually in tatt mags) who have had their tongue split. It just makes me... ugh...
And flesh carving? I don't see how that isn't torture in some way. It looks stupidly painful, the "art" doesn't even look that good, and the scar effect is going to look HORRIBLE in older age. Tatts usually age really well, you NEVER fuck with an older guy that has sleeves ._.

I kinda threw lip discing in there so people would be encouraged to add any of the "stranger" things they have seen that people do to themselves in the name of "art". I haven't actually met anyone that's had it done, and I am pretty sure I would just lol if I did.

I have no problem with piercings in moderation, and tattoos I'm fine with even a little less moderation, but still not overboard. The others just seem so odd and I wonder why people would choose to do them.

Tattoos are great. I like tattoos. They're awesome and I want some.

Piercings, wouldn't get any myself but some of them are good. Hell, some of them are really sexy. Nose studs are nice, I like those.

Theeeeeeen you get into the extreme stuff. Chains dangling off people's faces, earlobes that you could literally fit a fist through. I'm not exaggerating there. These actually make me physically sick.

To each their own, of course. I'm not gonna stop anyone from this strange form of self-mutilation but good God what are the advantages of having a two inch hole in your fucking ear!? All it takes is a stray hook or finger and... eurgh. I don't even want to think of what comes next.

And don't get me started on corset piercings.

EDIT: I don't know what tongue-splitting is but I can make an educated guess and it already makes me cringe. Then again, I am particularly sensitive about my tongue being intact.

"Hmm, that looks great!
Now just keep that figure, skin tightness, skin tone, and moisture, and it'll look great when you're older!"
Oh wait...

I was going to post a pic of the process, but it just made me facepalm.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
My friend has holes in his earlobes that you can fit a pencil through, which doesn't bother me that much. When he takes his plugs out, they don't look shriveled up and gross, just a little stretched. I think its because I've gotten used to seeing him with his plugs in, that I'm used to it, but its hard to judge.
Then there are the guys who can fit fruits through their earlobes... ugh... I don't even want to think about it...

And yeah, tongue splitting is just really fucking weird.
Makes my tongue cringe =|

Call me boring, but getting an image permanantly etched into my body isn't my idea of a good time. Especially since my own personal interests change over the years.

I like tattoos and piercing, I've considered getting both in the past. I have no interest in the more extreme stuff, but I don't object to people doing it, so long as they understand the ramifications of it.

As for this stuff being 'art,' one if my close friends is a tattoo artist, and it is certainly an art form. It is also one if the most difficult (think long and hard, do you have the guts and steady hand to use a mechanical needle to implant dye into someone's body, where you can't make a single mistake?)

As said many times before by me. Love them, love every new people come up to ornament their bodies, and while i won't do everything to myself i have several piercings and tattoo's.

Any one doesn't like it? It's their problem. No one forces you to have those. I don't go around saying you can't wear whatever you like and expect the same from others. Simple as that.

I get disgusted by looking at boring people who all dress the same, have same haircuts and just melt into single, dull-looking mass, but i don't go around telling them they are idiots.

Don't really like any of them, nor do I really find any kind of body art attractive.
Ear piercings, sure, whatever, but nose, tongue, all those just look weird to me.
Tattoos look like crap when your skin starts to get saggy.
As for the more extreme stuff... Nope...

*fiddles a little with nose ring*

I don't mind any of it - if people want to go completely overboard with it, that's their problem, not mine. Of course, they could end up looking like this guy...

Hahahahaha... Oh... oh fuck... look at his little mouth... it never stops being funny... Hahaha... the laughter... it hurts...

Edit: Might as well mention that I've got two piercings in my left ear (I'm planning on getting a third one, but haven't gotten around to it), one in my right ear and a ring in my left nostril. I'm gonna get a tattoo of the cancer symbol in ruby red once I can afford it, too, but I'm a poor student so that'll probably be a while.

Tatoos, go ahead, doesn't bother me in the slightest, occassionally I can find myself admiring the art on them.
Piercings: makes me nauseous. and all-out sick for some of them. Nipple piercings, genitalia piercings, the tongue piercings that go through to the other side, eyebrow/nose piercings of the same nature, and making holes the size of a penny coin through the ear... those I can't look at, or will vomit. To those who say "don't like, your problem, no-one forces you to have them" I am kind of forced to look at them all the same, so yes, I'm complaining about them in public.

And what are the latter 3? *googles*
Lip disking: oh god
tongue splitting: OH GOD
Flesh carving: ...meh, it's like tatoos but far less pretty.

It's kind of pointless really. Getting a tattoo to be self-expressive is kind of like quoting lyrics from songs as your facebook status.

Also, I hate that kind of stuff on girls. I LIKE girls' skin, it's nice. Please don't ruin it.

I don't mind very mild piercings (ears, nose) and a couple tattoos. When people start getting a lot of tattoos it starts to bother me only because I'd rather see the actual person when I look at them than a bunch of art. That's what museums are for.

Also, this thread and the recent threads about circumcision got me thinking: I wonder how many people perform/support body modification but are against circumcision using the "mutilating the body" argument...... just a thought

Like anything else, if it's all done in moderation - it's all good. Taken to extremes, it looks hideous.

Though the biggest turn-off for me is discing - there's just something about it that I find grotesque. I can live with tattoos, tongue splitting, scars, flesh corsetting and will applaud them.
