People choose to be different in many ways. The people in the pictures simply chose appearance as their form of expression.

Although... I do have 2 question for the man in the first picture.
1. Is it hard to eat with a hole in your lip?
2. Can you brush your upper and lower jaw at the same time like I imagine you can?

I think it's pretty cool. What have you done with your body?

I got fat once, I guess that was a mod of sorts.

I consider our bodies a pretty special thing and modifying it is the equivalent to specialty painting of decals on your car. Some people find it tacky, but why the F not? I intend to get a big full back tattoo at some point and I hope the escapist will help me to choose whether to make it a tribute to Zelda or Kirby (jk on the video game tribute, though I'm all the way on the big tattoo). If I wanted a job that didn't require a semblance of "normal looking" I'd almost certainly go for more extreme body modding. It's just cool, that's about all I can say.

Great. Any hope I had of good dreams has officially been ruined. Fucking Internet...

I don't get people like this either. One piercing, okay, but REALLY?
You should be glad I can't post the penis one on this site, otherwise you wouldn't sleep well for days.

How does that first guy eat? Wouldn't the food just dribble out of his mouth-hole while chewing? I mean I'm actually a bit of a transhumanist, I truly believe the next step of human evolution will be one of our own making as opposed to the whims of these silly squishy bodies of ours... but that's for the betterment of our race.

Superfluous mouth holes just seem impractical! Is there really a market out there for people so desperate to be different they're willing to physically mutilate themselves to a near disability degree?

Seems silly to me. Still, whatever. Doesn't effect me in any way and what a man or woman wants to do with their bodies is their business. As long as they don't try to force it on me, couldn't care less!

I'm curious what happens if you get a cold and have the nose ones....I mean, where does the snot go? Just dribble away...ew

Other than that...some look cool. They see it as art.

I think there is such a thing as going too far but it's all in the eye of the beholder. I do wonder how they get jobs outside of maybe tattoo parlours or pubs.

Don't wanna judge but... that shit is fucked up. If I saw someone come into a party or shopping centre, I wouldn't be like "Oh, cool, that guy stands out in his own way." I would be like "What the effing fuck? Is this guy going to pull out a machine gun and start mowing people down?"

Aye, that shit is scary.

At a guess, I would say for many it comes from a desire to express themselves as an individual in a society where simple piercings have become fairly mainstream and a voyeurism/exhibitionism trend in popular culture has made it feel difficult to stand out by "quieter" means. The latter also means that one's own body remains one of the few places one can truly "personally" express oneself- that is, in a way that is truly intended only for one's own fulfillment and not with an eye towards getting "likes" on Facebook or YouTube and so on.

That's a fairly amateur bit of opinion/sociology, though, so of course take it with a grain of salt.

I too don't understand these people. Some don't know what problems it'll cause later, some don't care and just think it looks cool, some have a ready source of income and don't need to worry about how they look and some just want to be different and take it too far. Actually that sounds like I do understand these people but in actual fact those are just the excuses I've come up with for them. Thankfully, I've never actually seen one of these people in public otherwise I could ask them, but I'd be too scared those bulges under there forehead are actually hidden laser pistols or blowdart guns...

Actually now that I think about it, I've only seen pictures like these in emails or forums like this. That tells me this isn't a big enough problem to worry about. I feel sorry for how they'll be later in life but I doubt there's anything anyone could do. When you go to those extremes, you don't do it on a whim, that tells me they're pretty much set in there decision. It's one of those "But WHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???" questions that always has a different answer and can only really be answered by those who are involved and is rarely understood by those who aren't.

Probably to get this exact reaction out of people?

Anyway, i fully endorse and encourage alternative visions of the "body beautiful".

I asked one of my mates (with full sleeves) this and his response was that "Old people look pretty crappy anyway. What's one more thing?"

I want someone to explain body modding to me.

No, I don't mean this:

I mean crap like this:

What the hell drives people to do this to themselves? Do they think it looks good or cool? Do they realize that shit like this will forever fuck up their lives, that they will never have decent employment, and that things done to this extreme cannot by undone?

I mean hell, I've seen a picture of a guy who tattooed his entire penis, and then cut it in half lengthwise so that it forked. WHY?! Why would someone do this?

Is there anyone here who can help me understand why anyone could possibly think that this is a good idea?
Well that's the most horrifying thing I've seen...this week.

Eh it?s there body they can do what they like. Some people treat there body like a canvas, body modding is a form of expression. Many use clothes as self expression, this is just taking it to a different level. I?m sure there are many who do it for the purely shock factor, to get are reaction from people and to be ?different?. Some people actually use it to further their career. I saw a guy who did this sort of thing and people paid to see him and his show.
Personally I like tattoos and support the body as a canvas thing. There are some really beautiful tattoos out there and I probably get a few at some point tho I would have to decide on some designs first and find a good tattooist. Extreme body modifications is a bit creepy TBH and looks often looks horrible, especially the examples you gave and can?t imagine huge holes in the side of your nose or in your chin would be healthy but hey...everybody has different tastes right and even if it is stupid for health/employment reason well...whatever its their choice. Not everyone has the same taste as me.

im all for that, but when i just cant look at people who have gauged ears so stretched out i could fit half my hand through. also thinking about people who split their tongue or hang their body from hooks, for fun, just kinda makes my skin crawl. people are free to look however they want, but as long as i dont try to restrict them in any way, im free to not be attracted to certain changes to their appearance that they might make.

also, if your changing your body, purely for the sake of being non-conformist, thats just another kind of conformity. i knew a guy in high school who has a great quote, "not having a tattoo, is the new tattoo"
