I'm going to get flame-spammed for this probably just for the name of the thread, but its a legit question.

So I've been watching a lot of old 70s-90s movies lately, and I've noticed something which I suppose is partially simply because I'm male, and partly because I noticed it. If you look at a lot of older movies from that time frame they have no problems displaying female breasts in a PG or PG-13 movie. Then you look at modern day movies, and its a demonized subject to show them outside of a European movie or R-rated movie.

So without getting into the psychological views, and all that mumbo jumbo on my perspective of this social change, I'd like to find out other people's views on this change. Why do you think movies began to avoid any display of a female's upper anatomy? Social change, political change, simply because movies changed?

Now before I get a ton of flaming about my interest in asking this question, I'm going to ask that people remain mature in this topic (to some extent, feel free to joke around), and would like to point out that I couldn't care less if breasts are shown in a movie as long as the director gets across their movie in a way that is realistic to the setting.

You mean you "couldn't" care less?

But yeah, I know what you mean, but I can't really think of why that'd be the case. Possibly there's been a cultural change, people are pretending to be more prudish than they use to be.

The feminist movement probably had something to do with it.

Not initially, of course. But eventually. Something about objectifying women or creating a generation of male rapists or the usual silly nonsense. Of course you've also got your super-prudes who are terrified of the concept of sex(religious or not, it exists on both sides). Then you've got publishers who can sell movies strictly on controversy or the idea of lots of very attractive boobies in them if they reserve it for special occasions rather than throwing them out there.

It's funny because people used to get married at 13. If your daughter was 15 and unmarried you were probably holding her back or there were no nearby eligible bachelors.

How can you partially notice something because you noticed it? That is... A strange sentence.

What can I say though. The flailers of the US are masters of their art. If they start flailing about something, you can be damn sure they wont stop until they got what they wanted or find something else to flail about. I am of course talking about flailing of arms, or arm flailing, and as we all know that is just another way of saying "complain/create a fuzz about".

Maybe, with all the porn floating around, the movies don't NEED to include breasts anymore? Because it's already well covered by a billion dollar industry?

This Film Is Not Yet Rated is a great explanation of how the MPAA (the group that gives movies their ratings) controls what can and cannot be put into movies. It's on Netflix watch instant, check it out.

This deveopment is news to me!

Maybe this is only in the USA, because everywhere else in the world is generally fairly happy to show a little bit of boob. But to be honest, even in American films I haven't really noticed any change, and I'm the type of guy who definitely would notice.

The circular logic goes round and round, round and round, round and round. The circular logic goes round and round all through the town.

To the OP: Because we've become prudes. Graphically showing the ripping out of an eye ball out of its socket it okay though, it seems.

Religious groups in the US got a stronger lobby. This Lobby then started enforcing "family values". Religion in general seems to have become stronger in the US the past 10 years.

Feminists, yada yada.

It's a Christian thing as well. They're usually late to the media party, but they get on board at some point or another.

Yeah, but sex sells in its myriad forms. Titillating imagery (I'm tittering at the innuendo) helps provoke a subconscious response. You may not go into an action movie for sexual reasons, but seeing a sideboob in the advertisement might incline people to go see.

The opposite effect happened to me when I was watching Avatar. The lead guy's blueberry catgirlfriend had smaller breasts than he did.

You can usually attribute such unwanted or untoward changes to a bunch of "Dicks" in power.

Oh, that's a bloody easy one. The change occurred alongside the strengthening of political correctness. We're not allowed to slur in the name of laughs, or fart, or tell dirty jokes. We're not allowed to mention knickers, knockers, bazooms, or semprini (Monty Python joke). And it's all due to people being afraid to speak out in a normal and non-neurotic manner. Pathetic, isn't it?

Because movies will be rated according to how the American government would like them rated.

eg. Battle: LA is PG - 13 because it is marine "Hoo ra!" recruitment film, even though there is apparently a scene in which a guy rips an alien's chest off and you see all of its innards.

On the other hand... in The King's Speech there is a scene that King George says Fuck a few too many times. The King's Speech got an R rating.

If you've ever seen Total Recall on TV, you'll probably noticed the scene where a guy gets his spine ripped out his ass, blood everywhere, and then the swearing is bleeped out.

In conclusion, according to government censors, Violence = OK, Swearing and Nudity = Bad bad bad, naughty naughty.

Yes, it was later at night when I typed this so I didn't notice that and planned to check responses either this morning or this afternoon XD

Religious people decided they have the right to force their views on everyone else. That's the reason for most everything that's wrong with the world.
