I would argue that some stories though are actually told better in the format of a game. For instance, I've read quite a bit of H.P. Lovecraft in my days, and my view on Lovecraft in retrospect has been that he was a bad author with some really good ideas, and that more often than not the authors who were inspired by his works are far superior to Lovecraft himself. See, the problem is that in the stories that Lovecraft tells, often times the purpose of the story is to experience a bizarre world. I mean, does anyone really think that any of Lovecraft's characters were well written? The main character, more often than not, was the same guy in a different suit. And most of the other characters were poorly crafted. The stories often followed the same structures, and were hardly that unpredictible. But what the man had a real talent for was creating this insane twisted archaic world that you just wanted to see more of....
The genius that lies behind Lovecraft is the *unknown*, though. Part of the horror lay in the fact that you never really knew what the monsters were, save the few points of description given off by madmen. Bringing that into a game would be horrendous, since you would be forced to give all of the monsters and settings true form, spoiling much of the fun.

Two ideas for RPGs. One would be set in Terry Pratchett's Discworld where you play a city Guard in Ankh-Morpork. You get to interact with the other guards, keep the peace, and so on, going on missions where you get to interact with characters from the other areas of the city. and the big plot is to bring Mr. Teatime back from the dead so he can kill death himself, or something suitably epic.

And #2 already got mentioned- you play another private investigator in the world of the Nightside- it's not like John Taylor is the only one- he's just the best.

I also think the manga "Bizenghast" would make a good game- trying to find out what Traumas keep the ghosts of the mausoleums from their rest with Edaniel (and later Edrear) would make a good spooky/creepy game.

I also think there could be a game done from the Eve Dallas books by J.D. Robb- solving mysteries in the future. But then, I have loved the CSI games, so...
