The Name of the Wind
The Bartimaeus Trilogy

And that's all I can think of right now.

EDIT: The Underland Chronicles.

Hello fellow escapists,

I was wondering if people could recommend me some books/series to read? I prefer sci-fi, but any genre is good. My favorite author is R.A. Salvatore, though i've read some threads that claim he is overrated o_O. I was thinking about reading Glen Cook's Black Company series, can anyone say if this book is worth the money or not?

EDIT: sorry meant to say sci-fi or fantasy
If you like Sci-Fi I suggest The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It's a post apocalyptic setting, a heart pounding story that flows so brilliantly, and to top it off the characters are so well designed that you cannot help but get emotionally attached to them! Though it is not necessarily sci-fi or fantasy its a great book.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
by Douglas Adams.
Yet another hilarious science-fiction work from the same brilliant mind behind the Hitchhiker's Guide series, with genuinely likeable characters, a fantasy twist, a surprising amount of depth and suspense and a few odd references to classic British literature to boot.

I'd say Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged but I'll get thrown out a window.

Tom Clancy is pretty good.

If you want something to keep you busy there is the Song of Ice and Fire Septology, where most entries clock in at over 1000 pages and the last three books aren't out yet.

Uhmm I will try to keep this directed towards sci fi fantasy, but well I have add.

Okay first of all one of my favorite authors is Jim Butcher, I know the books aren't particularly deep but once I start reading them I stop doing anything else until they are done. He specializes in fantasy/ sci-fi.

Oh the Kingkiller chronicles are good, I think they are called that the only book out right now though is the name of the wind although hopefully the Wise man's fear will be coming out soon.

I can't think of any sci fi at the moment, although I have read a bit of it and I don't just want to parrot the answers Dune and Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, but uhmm oh Ender's Game that was really good and I even enjoyed them up to the third one even if the series takes a bit of a left turn there.

I know I am forgetting a lot here, but on to other books that aren't really fantasy related:

Tim Dorsey's little series of books. They are about a serial killer, they are funny, you will not find any books like them.

And I suppose that is it although I am trying to get through the works of H.P. Lovecraft right now, and so far they are rather good, particularly the Cthulu mythos, but anyways I suppose that is it.

you already like salvatore, thats all you really need...

but i suppose if you really want something else you should go with the warhammer 40,000 Gaunt's Ghosts Novels, they are as action packed as salvatore, gorey and very easy to get into, you dont have to worry to much about the warhammer 40k universe background as the ghosts are typically very far away from all that nonsense and just focus on the fight at hand

If you like SF, Dune is an absolute must-read. It's pretty much the Lord of the Rings of SF novels. Other than that, Niven is ok, but his science tends to take precedence over his characters, which I disliked quite a lot. Iain M. Banks is very, very good.

Other than SF, if you like fantasy, which you probably do given that you like Salvatore, then you have to read A Song of Ice and Fire. Admittedly, it is extremely long, and there are still three books yet to be released, but fantasy fiction really does not get any better than it.

They're fine as long as the plagiarism doesn't make you want to burn the damn things.
Ya i was thinking of checking out A Song of Fire and Ice, but it looked pretty intimidating. I've heard it recommended a lot so ill probably give it a look thought

The best science fiction writer is James Tiptree, Jr. Almost any subcategory you can think of, Tiptree is the best at it.

Tiptree did great "hard" science fiction. Tiptree did great psychedelic science fiction. Tiptree did stories that call back to the "space opera" tradition but manage to still cover something deep. Tiptree did cyberpunk before cyberpunk was even, like, a thing.

Tiptree is simultaneously the best male sci-fi writer and the best female sci-fi writer.

You owe it to yourself to read Tiptree sometime. Maybe not now, but sometime. Preferably sometime when you find yourself thinking a lot about gender, consciousness, or death.

Her Smoke Rose Up Forever is a good collection of a lot of the best stuff in one book.

Im glad some other people love salvatore too
Do the 40,000 novels have good stories? I was actually looking at that series today at my local bookshop but i wasnt too sure if the story was any good.

If you've heard of a TV show called Red Dwarf (comedy sci fi programme) The guys who wrote the show also did some books, Last Human, Backwards and Better than Life (all based on red dwarf). They are a really funny read. Rob Grant also wrote some other books of which i have only read one called incompetence and that too was good.

with the ghosts the good thing is that there is a storyline but its not the mad interstellar space epic that gets overly complicated and annoying, the ghosts are simply small fish in a MASSIVE pond so there is a storyline and sub plots that all work really well together, but the main purpose of a storyline in a GG novel is as a purpose or a reason for the characters to be fighting...

when is say small fish in a massive pond, there are 3000 of them but this book is in the imperium of man, where a billion is barely a blip on the radar screen

Also do yourself a favour and get them in the omnibus version (because it looks cool and there is extra content) and read them in order, it will keep you in suspense, dont be a noob like me and read a book randomly because then you will know who lives or dies...

Robin Hobb's Farseer series
Terry Pratchett's Discworld series (you can read these whenever)
Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Anansi Boys
Stephen King's Dark Tower
Robert Jordan's Sword of Truth.

Funny you mentioned Black Company series, I've been looking into that too. I'll probably read it after finishing Farseer.

What is it plagerized from?
What the hell? Do we even need to answer that question? Read your first post again. The answer is right there. Plagiarised from Star Wars, fool person.

Seriously though, if you've read any of that series then it should be completely obvious. Now, back on topic. I'd recommend any Discworld books (preferably in order, start with The Colour Of Magic), and indeed anything from Pratchett. Also, Ian Irvine's Three Worlds Cycle (two quartets and a trilogy, with a stand alone book soon to be written - start with A Shadow On The Glass), and also Phillip Reeves' Mortal Engines quartet. That's a bit of steampunk there for you and is completely epic. Finally, I highly recommend the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman, if you fancy a bit of religious/political commentary (although it isn't in your face and I read them plenty of times without picking up any of the religious stuff, at least until I was a bit older).
