So I've used 3 golden keys so far, once accidentally on My Gunzerker and twice on my main character (Axton)
The first time, I got 2 Purple pistols that I replaced in less than an hour so I was rather unimpressed. But whatever my fault I'll live with it.

But on the 2nd key I used (at level 37, and used it because I got a 3rd key) I got a sweet assault rilfe that easily destroyed ALL of my gear, the only way it could have been better is if it had been either bandit or tediore and not dahl (because It needed more than 33 magazine size and I'm not a fan of the burst when zoomed idea) It did over 2k damage per shot, was a fire element with a decent elemental chance and elemental damage, fired fast and had a 90+ accuracy rating. Also got A slag sniper that did double what my current rifles do (it did about 4k damage, and was just better overall, like it should be).

Here's the kicker, the game automatically saves when you use the key but doesn't give a damn afterwards. After I picked them up and tested them out (to see how fast they fired, looked etc) My game crashes and I lose BOTH of these fantastic guns. Que FML

In a small fit of rage I say "Fuck it" and use my last key hoping to get something halfway decent, and once again I got 2 shitty pistols that I would never use.

TL;DR I got fucked out of 3 golden keys and i'm not sure if i'm depressed about it or want to throw my computer out of the window and into the street.

So has this happened to anybody else or am I just super unlucky?

Can't say, I'm saving up the keys for later on. Sounds like some shitty luck there, buds.

I've heard of that happening. Hasn't happened to me (I used one of my two so far, which was by accident because I'm too stupid to read that the chest might require the use of a Golden Key and once I realized it, it was too late), and I really hope it doesn't. I'll probably quit and save as soon as I used my second, just to make sure that I don't lose the weapon.

Actually I was pretty miffed that I got 2x better weapons out of gold chests meanwhile I'm putting my blood sweat and tears into boss fights and they drop shit that isn't even worth taking to the shops...

Random loot is just a horrible thing, design stuff properly devs and stop being lazy.

In fact It is not, you have simply had very bad luck.
Yes the chance of getting something really good is not very high but you can still get extremely good stuff and you do not have to go out of your way trying to kill every single boss, you just have to loot all the boxes and refuse piles ... yes it takes a lot of time but it is easier and cheaper than what you are apparently doing.

So one should replace the exciting boss fights for dumpster diving, my that does sound like a great idea.
And I think my next big hobby will be watching grass grow, it could probably make a great replacement for gaming.

Given the appeal of the game is couched in loot, more loot seems like the way to go. Of course, my own experience with the game was that loot clearly hated me. About a half dozen times in the game I reached points where doing something truly useful was frustratingly difficult simply because I hadn't found a better gun in a long time. And then I'd find something better.

Jacob is the best manufacturer in my estimation. Countless times I was throwing corpses at problems only to have some white Jacob gun fall from a villain only to find that this white gun that was a mere 3 levels higher than my purple gun (which was having no effect) was so much better in all respects that I was forced to use it. Jacob's line of garbage revolvers is all that stood between Pandora and the apocalypse (and that one white Teidore launcher I found while moving to the warrior). Also between the game saying in my drive or being pitched into the dark abyss of my game case where it would fester and rot for months or years.

But again, you do not have to go out of your way to do dedicated loot runs, in any given area where one might have a task, there are a lot of things to loot, say you need to move this cart to some place, you proceed to do it ... oh look, a gun chest next to the path, might as well open it and see what is inside while you are there.
Or if you are a compulsive explorer, you inevitably come across gun chests and refuse piles you can loot on your way.

And when that proves as fruitless as the bosses we are back to rubble frisking...

If the items were properly designed they could put something meaningful at the end of each task, but with the lazy approach of random shit those things just feel random, and lazy.

Ugh screw the keys, I was planning on saving mine until endgame but I accidentally used my only one at about level 9, saw the chest in town and instinctively opened it without even thinking, was very annoyed it didn't give a "are you sure you want to use golden key" prompt, the two weapons I got from it were pretty much useless and were replaced extremely quickly. You find tons of amazing weapons just from playing the game anyway so no big deal.

In many games that give you pre-made stuff as rewards for completing tasks or killing certain tough enemies, if you have been lucky then those rewards are often pretty useless compared to what you already have and randomly finding something better feels kind of like a small victory and probably gives you something that will last you a long time as opposed to getting something predetermined and then replacing it a few hours later with something else predetermined that is perhaps only slightly better.

Well it scales to your level, so when you get stronger you aren't going to use it. I was just a way of them giving a rare weapon to players when they want one.

Two words: Bandit Arena.

Shoot the helmets off those goliaths and harvest the loot from the God level ones.
