It's more or less the same thing, just better. The environments are more varied, the weapons are more varied, the enemies are more varied, the battles (especially later on) are way more intense than anything was in the first game, and hell, even the story and dialogue are better.
At first I was taken aback by just how similar it was to the first game, and I became skeptical about it. However, it got good. Really fast.
I'm loving this game so far, but I don't think I could play the games back to back without suffering some horrible burnout.

I got the game yesterday and so far I'm a bit disappointed. Admittedly, my first character was Zero and he has been universally acknowledged as not very good, but my Gunzerker playthrough has not flipped the coin. Compared to what was promised, the game feels very much like the first Borderlands but only with the scenery swapped for snowy mountains and snowfields. The game has a lot more character (and characters), but I'm still shooting lots of bandits, I still have a ridiculously small inventory while encountering an enormous amount of loot, and there really is no fluidity. However, I still am at the beginning of the game so hopefully the game will finally start to deliver its promise of variation.

V8, you definitely should give it a chance. The first area is a bit lame, and I also found Zer0 and Salvador to be boring (actually, I only enjoy the Siren), but it widens out so much once you get farther in.

From what I played, it needs co-op, at least in the beginning. It's kinda bland otherwise (then again, my first taste of Borderlands 1 was in co-op, so maybe the original had the same problem). Definitely gets better fast, though.

I tried playing the original Borderlands, I really tried to like it, but I couldn't. Something just didn't click for me. It was too slow-paced, single-player was a chore, and the characters in co-op were un-balanced to the point that one player was usually running around trying not to get shot while the other massacred everyone.

After playing Borderlands 2 for a few days, I've got to say, it's a HUGE improvement over the original!

Tons more enemies, a storyline, some interesting characters, LOTS MORE GUNS, and having a main villain as a constant presence improves this game immensely!

Sure, the writing might not be thought-provoking, but that doesn't mean the game itself isn't innovative. This is the truest form of an RPG/Shooter hybrid I've seen, isn't that innovative?

And don't say Deus Ex, it was a good try, but it was more of a shooter than RPG.

As far as Bioshock goes, people give that game way too much credit. Bioshock wasn't innovative, it was basically a graphically improved System Shock 2. It's most innovative touch was it's setting, which, while good, there are plenty of other games with unique settings.

Halo's alien Fore-runner Rings (Halos)
Fallout's Wastelands
Mass Effects... everything (okay, I'm a little biased)

And last but not least
STALKER's Chernobyle Zone, which, in my opinion, is a far better setting than Bioshock's Rapture.

Anyways, the point is, Borderlands 2 is a must-by for anyone who wants lots of action, humor, and gun-variety.

Love the game, did notice that in the Caustic Caverns the sound track resembles a little like the original Starcraft music playing the terrains. Having issues dealing with skag ammo, I get the concept behind it, but I am still working out some quirks. Oh and found another bug commando's should be aware of: When you get to the City of Opportunity, their is a bug that makes your perks irrelevent. to fix this respec your perks

The game is pretty damn awesome, they really upped the everything in this game! Environments are more varied, tons of different foes to fight, and do I even need to say the guns are so, so much more diverse? The voice action is superb and 60% of the time the game's story and humor works, the other 40% of the time it's cringe worthy though; it's very hit and miss for me.

However, there is one thing that just irritates me about the game, but it's a story one so it's not too big of a deal. I spoilered it encase one is curious though it touches on the whole story so expect loads of spoilers, not just one or two.

I swear they make up this game's story as it goes. Guardian angel is first a AI, but than she's a siren, than she's the daughter of handsome jack, than roland dies and plot holes form all over the place throughout the whole game.

For instance early game handsome jack clearly just wants you dead and even puts a bounty on your head so bandits can kill you yet it turns out he wanted you alive to trick you into deactivating the shields of sanctuary. Why didn't he intentionally make it a cake walk instead? Why didn't he attack the city after capturing Lilith, when even her abilities she bluffed would not be in use since she's well... Captured and stuff.

And than there is the part where handsome jack doesn't even use his own New-U machines despite being the kind of guy who would constantly use them since he's a selfish prick and all. Also why doesn't he just New-U the guardian angel?

This game really drops the ball plot-wise later on, that's all I am saying.
