Like many of you, I am subjecting my wallet to quite a bit of strain over this Steam sale, but I've finally reached the point where my "do not miss" list is down to one game: Sonic Generations, which is on sale today but I'll have to cut it down to the wire due to Paypal being lazy. However, I will get some change from that, and the biggest thing I'm likely to spend it on is Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition (AKA "It would have been GOTY if we'd included all this stuff in the vanilla game" Edition).

Here's the thing: I'm a little worried about the SecuROM DRM that comes with the DLC, and I'm not sure if it applies to the GOTY edition. I'm also not sure of its quality as a game, particularly when played alone (although I do have one friend with the game.) So I'm going to ask you guys, as I normally do: Is Borderlands GOTY worth $15?

Captcha: you're dSvity
Is that a name or is it something like "I'm fired"?

Edit: The Page 51 Monster from the Funorb forums ate my poll, so I'll need you to comment: both on the game and the DRM.

If you have a friend who also has it then god yes, Borderlands is "meh" when played alone but as you get a friend or two it becomes one of the best co-op multiplayer experiences out there

This is entirely my opinion and should not be taken for anything more than that.

I payed $14 for a used copy of Borderlands for the PS3 and I did not think it was worth it. The first few hours of gunning down desert people and looting chests was fun until I realized that's all there was. Maybe I just played the game too late but I found the whole experience to be incredibly shallow. You're constantly shifting through piles of mediocre weapons trying to see which one is the best, when in game, there is no "best"or well rounded weapon. The few characters that hand you fetch quests have flat personalities and the landscape rarely varies.

I would recommend buying some other games on Steam instead, such as: Killing Floor, Super Meat Boy, Dungeons of Dredmor, Braid, Cave Story, Torchlight, or Amnesia.

Thats really what Borderlands is about though, its a loot fest which is great fun for some, it sounds like you played it by yourself, in which case I dont blame you for thinking its boring because its true, single player Borderlands is horrible :'(

I played it on Xbox 360, so I don't know anything about the DRM. As for the game itself, if you have someone to play it with it's definitely worth it. It's a boring single player but a great co-op.

Only if you have a friend, or friends to enjoy it with. If not, then that's a definite no. There is no game in the single-player, it's far too shallow. It works well as a dungeon-raider with guns, with friends.

Eh i've got it on PC, couldn't really get into it. It just seemed to shallow to me, story and character wise anyway. But i could see how it would be fun with a few friends co op style.

Really this is all that needs to be said about Borderlands, if you have friends who have it then buy it, if not get something else instead.

I went on the forums before the game was released to ask if it could be played in third person. First person games set off my VMS (virtual motion sickness). But if the game is like, say, Skyrim that touts first person but can be played in third person, then I could play it without puking my guts out.

The overwhelming about of stupidity and hate I received from the forum goers was staggering and when even the forum moderator got in on it I told him exactly where, which angle, and hold hard to shove it before I left never to return. Since I knew the game was geared toward multiplayer and I didn't know anyone else who wanted to play it I knew the type of people I encountered on the forum were the ones I'd be randomly thrown in together with in multiplayer.

Needless to say, I've never had trace of interest in the game since.

It's a pure grinding loot fest, if that's your thing then go for it. Personally I found it unbearably dull when playing by myself, and all right when playing with friends. Of course, I also dislike Diablo and those types of games, and I'm not that into FPSs either, so youir experience may differ.

I was going to say no, because it's routinely a daily deal for half that, and then I looked in your profile at where you're from. I'm so sorry.

Anyway, I have to agree with everyone who says it's fun with other people and less so by yourself. I did enjoy playing parts of it alone the first time through, though, just not really after that. SecuROM only applies to the first two bits of DLC and not the third and fourth or the base game by itself. Steam automatically downloads all of the ones you own, but I don't know if there's any way within the game to selectively activate only the ones you care about or something, because I specifically didn't buy those two for that reason.

Can't agree with any of these people saying "if you're playing alone then no". It's still a blast solo. And it's CERTAINLY worth $15. I can't believe we've reached a point where people are saying a great game isn't even worth $15.

I payed full price for it and I loved it. I also played it alone because I can't stand other people ruining my experience unless they're sitting and playing right next to me. I really loved searching for ultimate weapon and killing everything along the way. The thing is, Borderlands has the worst ending ever. It's not the end of the world because it's still a fun game and you can continue to play after the ending.

I personally loved Borderlands. The western theme FPS/Diablo hybrid worked for me. The Zombie DLC was fun, and the third one was pretty good except for all the boring driving, but still a trip, and I paid more than $14 for it.
