For me, it was the final boss of Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2. It was my third time doing this fight, I think, and the boss practically destroyed me. I had 4 health, no healing items or spells, no offensive spells, and I'd already used the Mono Shift (powers you up for a bit and refills your health bar). I thought I was screwed. I won only because I saw the pattern to his attacks and exploited that like a mother-f**ker. My palms were actually sweating and my heart was racing by the time I finished that fight. I still think back on that battle and get chills.

Now, let's hear your stories. Which bosses did you beat that you thought you wouldn't? (on that playthrough anyways)

The last boss in Dead Space. Got through the whole thing without dying with one tiny slither of health and absolutely no ammo whatsoever. Never have I experienced such insanity again. Has since become my favourite boss fight and is probably the main reason I consider Dead Space one of the best survival horror/TPS games ever.

The final boss in Golden Sun. Out of my party of four who I was fighting this creature with, all my party had bitten the dust except my fire mage. Only problem was that the final boss was really resistant against fire.

Probably Lavvos from Chrono Trigger. We were in the car going on a vacation (this was the DS version) and I had died maybe 20 times in my previous attempts. FINALLY I defeated him and immediatley shouted "I beat it, whoooo". Everyone in the car was like "the fuck?"

Sarevok in Baldurs Gate 1, the final battle of HL2;Ep2 as well as several missions in Freespace 2, particularly the final escort mission and the mission where you have to scan the Sathanas' subsystems...so much stress, especially in those last 2.

the final boss in Vagrant Story,i think it was Rosencrantz transformed (not the secret super boss) it took me so many attempts and when I did beat him i had no more potions, health or patience...certainly the hardest boss battle i can remember

i can't remember specifically, but in ff12, during one of the "hunts" (sidemission where you go and hunt a specific monster that is an uber version of some random baddies you find normally) i accidentally did a super high one when i was only like level 35, and i hadn't saved in a while because i accidentally ran into this boss without realizing it, i was just grinding in the area, and this stupid snake came out of nowhere (it was in a cave dungeon where there was one way out and it was going backwards thru the snake) and all my guys did all their supers and attacked like crazy, only to have 90% of my team wiped out within less than 1 minute, and all i had left was balthier, in which he had a super shitty crossbow attached that he barely had the license for, and i was running away, he did a turn around last shot attempt as his attack gauge was full, and that one last crossbow shot killed the huge ass king serpent..

holy fuck i was jumping up and down that whole last segment trying to get balthier to run faster by me doing high knees in my "game" room...

for some reason that is the most memorable of the moment, although i'm sure i've had hundreds.

I was on the final boss of Prototype, nowhere near death, but almost out of time. In desperation, I started throwing missiles at him, hoping they would do a little more damage. Once five seconds hit, I thought "shit, I'm going to lose".

Then, at the 1.2 second mark, a missile hit and started the end game cutscene. I nearly tossed my controller I was so happy.

EDIT:

WoW, 2nd last boss ICC 10 heroic, the dragon. 150,000 hp left. I'm a Paladin tank, the rest of the raid is dead. I take her out giving us our first heroic kill of her. Vent went ballistic. I felt like a champion.

Just now on Xenogears, defeated Vierge. Had just under 1000 health at the start of the battle and 600 fuel, so I boosted the gear and went all out. Managed to defeat her with 300 health and 30 fuel remaining =P

The final quadruple boss in cave story (non-secret content), I've beat the 1st boss with 3/4 health (a bad start), the second with half health, used almost all my rocket ammo on the third because I cared too much for my hitpoints, and finished the final boss with 4 health left (normally instant death from anything), all my weapons demoted to level 1, and I killed him with one final well-aimed machine gun.

I beat Bayonetta with a fair amount of life left but it was the only time I was playing with a pair of jeans next to me with the seat facing up.

Besides that, I've never really played with pairs of pants lying next to me.

Yep, this. This so much. Final boss was hard enough, but then they threw in a timer. I won by the barest of margins, about 0.5 seconds left.

I've been doing the same with Deus Ex. I keep dying, then miraculously, I manage to win by the sliver of health. Cue dancing.
It stresses you out to no end, but goddamn does it feel good to win at the very last second possible.

every single boss in demon's souls. the great thing about demon's souls is the pressure to win the boss battle as there are no checkpoints whatsoever throughout the level so if you die, (which often, with one blow you will), you must start the level over and risk losing up to 100,000 soul points in the process.

ahhh demon's souls and i have a love/hate relationship.

Especially the False King.

The Shadow Queen from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I had no SP, 1 HP, and about 13 FP. I used Bobbery's Bomb-omb Blast, and took her down.

F'ING close battle indeed

I'd say pretty much every robot master in Megaman I've ever faced.
I'm just not very good at those games. I love them, but I'm still rubbish.
