Basically any boss in Dark Souls, at least the first time you play. Once you work out how to get 'em it's easier, but still, they are bastards.

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga

Demi-fiend

Hands down, the toughest fight in any game ever. I've tackled many a super-boss in RPGs, but when I was confronted with this blast from the past (he was the protagonist in Lucifer's Call) I called it quits. Seriously, fuck this guy. I've got all my party members at lv. 99, all stats maxed (which took a lot of grinding) and he can still take me down like it's nothing.

Eventually I went looking for a guide online. Sure enough, I found one, but it was so long and complex that I just decided to give up.

Any of the Dark Aeons on Final Fantasy 10.

Horrible bastards. Encountering one of them was synonymous with me turning off the game and forgetting about it for a few months.

Keep in mind that I was one of the few people on the planet who DIDN'T hate FFX as well, it's actually my 3rd favourite in the series (after 7 and 9)

Back in ps2 era. I got this not so popular game... I think it was monster hunter.

Yeah just that. Monster hunter. Not freedom, not dos or tri. Just "monster hunter".

You spend like 3 hours doing gathering and egg stealing quests and the game is always like "if you see this wyvern, run as much as your little hunter legs can".

And then you have to face it. the rathalos. At that point I was better geared up and not running around naked so I was confident. But then you face him... in the infamous area 9 of forest and hills... Dear god such cruelty of the game designers...

Is this about an unfair boss or one that seriously creeps you out?

The final boss in Link's Awakening still gives me chills.
The most heartpumping boss is from WoW, Yogg'Saron in Ulduar. That was some intense shit, even if it wasn't especially *hard*(with help), the whole thing was unnerving.

As for unfair bosses, Castlevania for the DS comes to mind, when you fight the main character turned dark lord. I don't remember the specifics, but that shit frustrated me to no end.
You mean Soma from Dawn of Sorrow?[footnote] The name's a play on DS, like Harmony of Despair is a play on HD (on PS3)[/footnote]

Exactly! Thanks :D

I did not know that. That's a good way of remembering the name.
I'm not even a hundred percent sure that it's Soma turned evil, but I'm sure it's some bonus level after you fail. It was a great gimmick, I really thought I was cheated out of a proper game when I saw that first ending.
If I remember correctly,
after Soma becomes Dracula
, you play as a Belmont and have to track him down and kill him. I've always loved Castlevania's new game plus modes, most will let you play as one of the minor characters, or as the villian in some cases!

There are a few boss tropes that always annoy me:

1) Times boss fights. Unless it's like the last boss in MGS 3 and the timer is long enough that it's basically just there to add dramatic tension.

2) Multi-stage boss fights with no save points in between (I'm looking at you Rogue Legacy)

3) Bosses that heal themselves

4) Boss fights that require you to knock them into a stun state and then hit a weak point before they wake up again. A few Metroid Prime series and Zelda bosses have done this and it always annoys me

Not so much a boss perhaps, but I started replaying The Bard's Tale recently but I then I got to the Bugbear quest and ARGLEBARGLEARGLEGAAAAAAAH! Hate that effing bear! I swear, the rest of the game is a snap compared to that effing bloody quest. GAH!

INB4: I guess you could say it's my... *dons shades* bugbear. YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH

The final boss in FTL. Then again, that game's designed so that unless you have certain weapons and defenses - there's no way you're going to beat it.

Right now it's got to be the random, stupidly powerful ships you run into in Assassin's Creed IV.
By now, I'm pretty much to the point where I can take on Tier 3 forts and I've managed to snag a couple of Man 'O War class vessels for use in the fleet minigame.
Still, every once in a while I'll run into the odd Frigate that has a billion HP and fires 3-5 consecutive broadsides that rip my ship to shreds. There was one such ship hovering around Tortuga in my last play-session, I took it on with two AI allies and it still wrecked me. I know they're not legendary ships, it probably has something to do with level, but the whole thing's so nebulous that you never really know what you can take on until one of you is sinking.

Titan Hardmode from FFXIV:ARR

it's not even titan that is the problem, it's the server being INCREDIBLY unforgiving.

the FFXIV:ARR servers only check your movement 3 times a second, essentially giving everyone a constant lag of 333ms, his abilities for DPS and healers to avoid are: a 1s cast time AoE which almost always 1shots you, a 1s cast time AoE line that knocks you off the arena (and a knockoff is "you're done for the rest of the fight, you can't be rezzed"), and time bombs that you need to avoid (also 1 shots)

all of those abilities are 1s cast time (except bombs), and with the server's "lag" they are shortened to 0.666 seconds, the servers are ALL in america, so europeans all have the additional lag.

oh. and if a single player out of the 8 dies over the 8 minute fight, that's it, you're done, you won't kill him in time.

and he's needed to get your relic (ie, the requirement for the BiS weapon) and access the binding coil of bahamut (the endgame raid which is actually EASIER than titan until the last boss)

after the 30th fruitless try, I decided "fuck this" and just paid people in full BiS gear to carry me through.

anyone who is able to complete that clusterfuck of a battle, I salute you (you masochists)
Thank you, because I have the honor of one day having to heal that particular fight. I'm not looking forward to it...but the day draws closer that I'm going to if I want a shot at my ultimate weapon. I hear they are going to make the fight a little easier with the new patch...but I don't know how much easier.

Bosses with phases. Mostly in jrpgs, you fight and fight and you finally destroy that last hit point. YAY I KILLED IT. You smile waiting for the death cutscene and then cry as the bosses turns into something bigger and more powerful. An as you fight this new phase you have to fears....1. is there another phase? 2. If i die, will i have to start from the start?

I cant remember the game, but it was a boss fight in which you had to die/lose to continue the story. I fought that guy like a mad man only to find out that i was meant to lose and wasted a ton of spells and power ups.

FINAL BOSS IN BLINX THE TIMESWEEPER!

I love that game, I never got to defeat the boss! I got up to his final phase once, couldn't work out how to hit him and died, got stuck on the rewind to old bosses part and ended up not finishing before the 360 came out. Compared to the rest of the bosses, a boss that could finally use time powers just like you made my jaw go all, to the floor and stuff.

Seriously though I need to play Blinx again, I love that game. It's like up there with Banjo Kazooie for me. Now when people ask me why I converted to Xbox instead of PS2 I can say Halo and Blinx fools.

Seriously though the final boss is like a disturbing black armor plated demon with a clock face.
I'm gonna have to second the last boss for Blinx. I got stuck on that boss for ages too! And if you think it's cool that he uses time controls against you, then you might find it even cooler that to beat that phase you have to counter his time controls with your own. It dazes him and you shoot him after you counter his controls.

Blinx got such a bad rap for such a good game. I don't even know why it got such average reviews, I loved everything from the art to the music to the concept.

I didn't have trouble with them but I agree that battle was horribly designed. Melee focused characters don't need to use any strategy. I put on the havel's armor, two handed my strongest weapon, and just hammered the attack button. Beat them in under a minute. Very unsatisfying

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Psychonauts. That entire Meat Circus section was a nightmare. Hats off to anyone who actually beat it. I got way too frustrated by it and quit
Must be the most unbalanced (between ranged/melee users) in the whole game. I went in scared to death after reading how it was the most difficult boss of the game, as if the others hadn't been difficult enough... Then beat them in the first try, not even trying to block their attacks or anything. It was like Pinwheel, just that it took longer.

Uhh why does people have any problem with Capra Demon? He has such a hard time reaching you as soon as you climb on that ledge over the entrance...
