I don't really follow that many game franchises, except Tomb Raider. The series has had its ups and downs, but I'm utterly dreading the impending reboot, aka Uncharted 4: Women In Peril edition.

I'd like to be optimistic, but it's difficult when every word that comes out of the mouths of the developers reinforces my impression that they have no idea what the hell they're doing.
Ive never played a tombraider game...but I'm very interested/optimistic

I think its a direction that needs to be taken (charachterwise)

Half Life. The first one was fantastic, the second was ... meh, and I think Valve is finding that the support isn't there for a third. (Yes, I'm aware that there is a rabid fanbase for it. I'm also aware it's a SMALL rabid fanbase. Sorry guys... it's over. Let it go.)
you're nuts right? the fanbase for half life is gigantic. if they released that game tomorrow, it would sell 1 million copies in a matter of days. saying half life's fanbase is small is like saying COD's fanbase is small.

I heard the Ratchet And Clank series have gone downhill HARD,
Uh, wut?

The R&C Future series is excellent, and A Crack In Time is one of the best games to date.

OT: I think that the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games have been shit lately.

The developers pretty much got rid of the ultimate jutsus in battle, which were arguably the best parts of the games.

I'll give the series one last chance to bring them back with UNS3, but if they don't put the ultimate jutsus back, then IT'S OVAR.
Agreed on the Ratchet and Clank thing, but I'm a tad confused as to your comment on the UNS games. I just received a very nasty, very explicit, and strangely satisfying message from an opponent because I beat them with a well-timed ultimate jutsu. They're still there.

Maybe Age of Empires? They should have left it alone with AoE 2.

Call of Duty was a fantastic WWII shooter.

The Halo series is now about to be four games old and every one from the second on has been a sad degeneration.

Oh, and above all: WoW. It was good until the Sunwell patch, since then it's been a slow mo car crash.
I agree with Age of Empires

...But how was Halo 3 bad?

Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot both spring to mind. Certainly when the games moved to the PS2 they went waaaay downhill. The more recent ones are utterly unplayable. This is mainly because the devs went on to do better things, like Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank.

Another one would be Fable. That was a great game and the TLC expansion only made it better, but then Fable 2 was the same game but with guns and jobs and I just couldn't bring myself to play Fable 3.

Also the NFS and Burnout series, but thats because you can only do so much with the basic premise of "race cars really fast".

Also, Halo 3:ODST was really great, best soundtrack in the series too.

I would like a proper Kingdom hearts game. I haven't really touched any of the handheld ones (Chain of memories was far from fun), but I would love a proper Kingdom Hearts 3. Give me Sora, Goofy, and Donald running off to save Mickey, Riku, Kairi and all of the worlds from the Heartless. Seriously, where is this game?

Also, what happened to Breath of Fire? They were good games. Yes, Dragon Quarter was shit, but that's because it penalized the hero's powers (use them too much and Game Over). No one wanted that. Give us a proper Breath of Fire 5. And while you do it, prove that turn based combat can still be fun. I think RPG developers forgot that...

Actually, that seems to have died: Turn based combat. For some reason, every game has to keep moving. You can't ever stand still and use that thing between your ears. And I think a lot of games suffer for it. I'd say that FFX's battle system was better than any of the ones that followed, for example.

Star Wars.
Star.
Wars.
---

I guess that can't be considered as "dead". But I saw it killed dead and the Frankenstein Monster that is The Old Republic is a bastardized version of what Star Wars was originally about.

In fact, yeah, they killed Star Wars and then skinned it; now a mediocre genre about battlecasters is walking around wearing Star Wars' face. It's very creepy...

Got to agree with you there on both counts. Final Fantasy 10 was the last fun one for me and has declined ever since (along with square). Turn based games seem to have died a death aswell which is a shame since they are the tactical mans choice. I like reaction based games but i miss thoughtfull strategy...at least it gives me a reason to retro game though :)

Only time will tell, I guess. Don't get me wrong - I played the first Tomb Raider when it was new, so I've got enough lingering affection for the series that I don't want it to fail. Lara was one of the gaming icons of the 90s - arguably the icon of the era, and I'd love to see the character make a great comeback... if they can get it right.

Well... I did play FFXI. It was my first MMO and I actually quite enjoyed it. Getting into groups and fighting was a lot of fun and party dynamics were pretty good. There were a few problems, when I played but nothing I feel like getting into. I felt that 12 had a pretty good story, though Vaan had no reason to exist, and 13, well, I really don't wanna have my game play itself which is what I felt was happening, at a certain point.

But yes, I do love my retro games. Currently playing Legend of Dragoon. Still waiting for Legend of Legaia on PSN... Get on that, Sony!

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are both incredible games and two of my favorite KH games. They don't feature Goofy and Donald and that may put you off but the stories are so good and the combat is improved and fun. If you have a psp or 3DS be sure to get them you will not regret it.

Also yeah Breath of Fire, I'm still in love with the third game!

I probably should have specified more.

What I meant was, the things that made the Ultimate Ninja games so great from my perspective were those interactive cutscenes (or quick-time events) for Ultimate jutsus. You would have to press buttons in a certain order or mash a button in order to get a meter to fill up for your side. If you filled up the meter for more than half of your side, the ultimate jutsu would play out and you would create massive damage. If your opponent got more than half of the bar, then the jutsu would fail and they would only receive a little damage.

Kinda like these:

All of the games had them up to the point of UNS2.

I just felt like those quick-time events made the games more dynamic and fun.

Oh I see, well in that case I have to agree with you. I think the reason the QTE's were dropped was something to do with the online play. I remember reading somewhere that internet connection speeds could give one player a severe advantage/disadvantage.

Something that also came to mind while watching that is: Why the hell didn't they transfer over half these moves? Kakashi's double lightning quake was always awesome, but in the last 2 games he didn't have it. Also the moves that have been copied over are far less cinematic/impressive.

Boo fucking hoo. They released a game in a franchise that you don't like and its suddenly a travesty unto humanity. Mario has appeared in more often in games not about platforming then in games that actually are of the genera he's supposed to be in. Nobody gives a shit about the new tennis game and complains about it but OMG, new megaman game, and it has a different protagonist and is on a mobile platform, end of world! GO tell that to Metal Gear fans, and share your brilliant knowledge about how changing the protagonist kills a franchise. You haven't even played the game and you've condemn it and the whole franchise because of this and possibly some other games. You know what? Screw you the series of games has gone for 25 years and its not going to die because of one different game. Hell its survived bad games in the series and is still going. I'm sick of whiners calling 'ruined forever' and complaining about franchise problems. Stick a cork in it, your whining isn't helping anyone, including yourself.

I love everything about BoF 3. Easily one of my favorite RPGs ever. You could turn into a dragon, and that is still one of the coolest things I've seen in a game.

Hear that Skyrim? A guy named "Dragonborn" can't become a dragon, but a bunch of old sprite games pulled it off.

Warrior dragon ruled.

ON topic, ummm, Breath of Fire needs a resurrection. Though, I do feel like, even crappy games keep the name alive. I am curious as to the next two years of gaming. Just feels like there is a change on the wind.
