After actually reading the thread, I pulled a massive sigh of relief, I was certain this was going to be one of "those" threads.
Once OP explained that the person is now 60, It made a lot more sense.

that said, I have a friend who is 20, went to a catholic school and knows nothing about sex, even vaguely.

Far more shockingly, I met an 18 year old girl, who had grown up in the UK and had NEVER heard of Monty Python. Now that's just disgraceful.

When I was 3 or 4 I consciously acknowledged that female genitalia was different than boys, despite being rather in the dark about what a vagina actually looked like and whatnot. I remember consciously thinking before that point that woman must have had a penis too. It wasn't until I was older (probably 12 to early teens) that I got fully acquainted with female anatomy.

I was three.
No, really. I was taking a bath with my cousin and asked her why she didn't have a dick like me.
That was a fun day.

When I was three or four. I had a little sister, and I asked what the difference was between boys and girls. My parents explained that to me.

Seriously though, I thought this was going to be a rant on transgendered issues.

I didn't know until sex ed. I was an early bloomer, so when I was fantasizing prior to sex ed, I imagined that women also had dicks.

How was I supposed to know??

What the eff? Did she not live among people? I mean, both mom and dad took baths with me at some point. Not to mention beaches and bath houses. I don't know about now, but not a long while ago it was pretty normal for a really young kid to be at the beach without swimwear, or at least they didn't hide behind a towel when they changed into it. And if you're young enough, no one cares if you follow your mom or dad into their respective changing room at a bath house.

Oh, and the internet. The god damn internet. Just how? God damn it, I always get scared when I think about how many people there are like this. Like that girl in class who said she wanted a baby, but she'd punch it if it ever cried. Or that other girl in class who asked if you can still breathe through your nose if you're being strangled. Fuck.

Hmmm...I suppose the next question is what people's reactions were when they found out. Good, bad, indifferent?

The problem I had with that speech was that my parents never had it with me. Never. I knew there was a difference, I just didn't seek it out, and then when I hit high school, I found out, so about 13, 14.

I...don?t actually know. I can?t think of a precise time or how I came to the realization that boys had a penis. I know it was before I was 6 because I remember going camping and some boys who were the same age as me showed me their penis for some reason but I think I knew before that. I have brother and I think we use to take baths together when I as really young and there are naked kids at beaches all the time.

That post made my day! That sex ed lesson must have left you absolutely cringing for the rest of day :p

OT: Don't even remember. I got a book at like 11-12 from my parents explaining these things and just remembered already knowing everything... oh well. And my sexual interest came quite late by many standards, but my knowledge was early... so no conundrums like Zehydra ;P

18? Fuck. That must been a shock.

...how did she find out, in the end?

I was well aware that girls had different bits from about as early as I remember, and I think I found out about sex when I was... 9ish? The sex ed class in our school was done when we were 10, but I had older friends so I definitely found out before then. Sex ed was funny, I don't think most of the people in the class really knew much before then. I distinctly remember some girl asking how getting a boner was even possible and then she cried when she was told that it's basically blood.

17 years old and didn't know what a penis is.

Child protective services should have taken her away from her parents 17 years ago, or Fuck, right now because she's still a child!
That's bad parenting.
She's allowed to have sex, legally she should not be learning about the contents of her partner's underpants the minute before it matters.

Nobody should make it to 10 without knowing the difference between boys and girls.
It's plain criminal to keep that information from them until they're 18.

At time of writing is she a normal functional human being?

I think I just saw a naked Barbie doll and assumed that's what it was, and before you ask, never saw a naked Ken doll until I had been truly informed.

That is rather unusual, yes.

...

I came into this thread expecting it to be about transgender issues.
As a transgender individual, I am desperately avoiding being offended by the amount of ignorance here, I dont think these people quite get what they are saying in the same context.

Too young to remember. Probably came from the fact that my (grand)parents didn't give me baths at a young age, I took showers with them. From that distance, it's very difficult not to realize men and women are different.
