Well, I'm Finnish, and the whole family went to sauna together, so I always knew.
Plus I lived on the countryside, and saw animals mating all the time and had an interest in biology, so I always knew how that worked.

fairly off topic but any girls in here that have an aversion to blood that have difficulty dealing with menstruation or is that something you pretty much instantly over come the second you start your first period?
i had a friend who spent a fair chunk of his high school career in detention or sick bay because he was so freaked out by blood that i could just prick my finger with a needle and send him to dream land (yes i done that as often as possible ^^) but i would say the average girl with anything near that sort of aversion to blood would have trouble leading a normal life
Some girls can have issues with blood, but it's something most people get used to, if not comfortable. Some people never get used to it, which might be related to sexual identity-issues. (But might not)
But of course there are ways to deal with it, like hormonal treatment, which can be a good option even if you're not creeped out by blood. Some women have painful periods or bleed so much it's unhealthy. It's very individual how the menstrual cycle affects a woman.

to be fair that's prolly a bit too much to put onto a child or a parent first explaining sex. i can imagine the conversation however you would likely not have it with a kid unless they themselves were transgender:

"hey timmy time to talk about the birds and the bees. so boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. the boy puts his penis in the vagina and a baby is made. but sometimes the boy puts the pee pee in another boys poo poo and sometimes 2 girls rubs themselves together or do other things that can't make a baby.
oh yeah also sometimes the boy or girl has a penis and a vagina.
oh yeah and sometimes the boy has a penis but is really a girl. or the girl has a penis but is still a girl
also it's possible to have 2 penises or vaginas or none at all and still be a boy or a girl.
a boy or a girl might decide they want to be the other and dress like that or maybe cut their penis or vagina to be the other sex.
and finally sometimes you can have a penis or a vagina or nothing at all and not be a boy or a girl."
It's really not.

"Girls have vaginas and boys have penises. But some people don't exactly fit in there, and if you feel like something weird is happening with your body, tell me and we can talk about it. It's probably normal and nothing to worry about."

I don't remember, but I guess before the age of 5. Then again, I have a lot of siblings. Plus, going to the beach in the summertime, it's practically impossible not to come across a couple of two- or tree-year-olds running around naked. I think maybe I asked my mom about it when I was four, something like "what's the difference between a girl and a boy?".

Very strongly disagree with that.

It only sounds strange because we've been taught that it's either one thing or the other. If people were brought up without having to rote learn arbitrary pigeonholes to stick people in, it wouldn't be an issue.

technically not though
we generally define sex by what sexual organs people have because the vast majority of each sex has the correct organs but that is only a byproduct of their chromosomes and again it is not always that simple
a case can always be made for gender confusion as well since we usually do not see people as male or female by looking at their sex organs or genes unless we are doctors so we could say a boy is a boy because he looks like one and a girl is a girl because she looks like one due to hormonal differences

i point you towards this yahoo answer http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090206181656AAjA6qC
please note that what is largely considered the correct answer "their genes" got 3 votes. men = penis girl = vagina got 5 votes and is obviously the most popular because it is the easier answer for the average person to understand

also "i am a dinosaur" got 1 vote. i don't want to say that is an incorrect answer because that person may well be a dinosaur but it is likely not relevant to the discussion

that may well be the case and i wouldn't personally describe it as weird but parents have a hard enough time explaining the birds and the bees without also describing the platypuses and the porcupines

Quite early. I don't remember when, but growing up with a sister (and having sex ed classes in high school) ensured that I wouldn't get to 18 with knowing that girls have vaginas.

ok i should prolly explain how she made it to 18 without knowing or thats all this thread will be

for starters she is about 60 now which means no internet, no jackass ball shots and very little tv or movie nudity.
she went to catholic school and they refused to teach sex ed. although i honestly don't know how you can make it through school without at least one of your friends mentioning their kid brother or their current boyfriend but yes somehow she was never in a position where the subject came up
she had very strict parents that thought if they never explained sex she would not become sexually active and you gotta admit up until she was 18 it fucking worked!
she was never under the illusion that men and women were the same but the extent of their differences was limited to women having boobs and looking feminine and men having more muscles and a deeper voice

also in case you missed it in the other thread. the only reason she found out was a male friend of hers while trying to convince her his job was "banana bender" tricked her into reaching into his pants (yes she was skeptical) otherwise she may never have known!!

i want to reiterate that she is not mentally challenged or anything, she is currently a fairly high powered business woman and is not easily fooled. just as a random fluke of events she was somehow able to avoid the subject of sexual organs for 18 years of her life and was thus unaware

also in case you didn't get the reference in the title i assume you are too young and must have missed the cinematic gem which is kindergarten cop starring governor Schwarzenegger
Well that makes a lot of sense.

If she had grown up with a sheltered upbringing in modern times I reckon it'd be impossible for her to not know that men have a penis with all the sexual innuendoes in the media.

Also that is indeed a cinematic gem. :D Makes me wanna go check out a bunch of 80s Schwarzenegger comedies for old time's sake.

18? Fuck. That must been a shock.

...how did she find out, in the end?
She stuck a hand down a guy's pants. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.398237-boys-have-a-penis-girls-have-a-vagina#16282618]

I also knew about female anatomy when I was a kid, but not in a way that most would come to know.

In my household, around that time, my father would always rent movies from a local video store, most of which consisted of Old School Mexican Comedies. Now, these films were notorious for being extremely hilarious, misogynistic films. All the women in these movies spent a good period of time naked, topless, engaged in sex or sexual activities, or just flat out doing sexual stuff. I wasn't altogether sure what I was seeing, but I knew that women had bigger breast than men and did not have a penis (I had not idea what a vagina was back then).

Granted, these movies are funny as hell, and would be decent films if the nudity and sexual content were toned down and edited a little.

Santa Clause is going to town!~

OT: I came here expecting something strange.

I was not disappointed. To answer the question, I've known since I was around five, surely?

How a girl can live to 18 without hearing about sweaty, hairy cocks male genitalia is beyond me.

Pretty sure I learnt that boys and girls had different genitalia when I was around 4 or 5. Though I didn't find out about sex until a while later. I think I was about 7 or 8 when I first asked my parents about Sex after seeing the word written on the front of one of those women's magazines that my mum always bought and having the funny moment of them asking me where I heard that word and nervously replying about the magazine only for them to act all embarrassed. Still didn't learn what it meant until later though.

I don't remember the exact time. I knew as a little kid that girls had different parts, but I didn't know the specifics till around 12, I think. And that was only finding out that women have vaginas. I later learned from a conversation with my dad that they have multiple other parts that confuse me to all hell (also that sex involves you putting you penis inside of it O.O). Good thing I'm gay since, honestly, female genitalia terrifies me.

I've known for as long as I can remember. I was a very inquisitive toddler and child.

That must've been one hell of a revelation for her.

Heheheh. It's actually quite a funny subject. How the hell can someone get to 18 and not know the main difference between genders? Men have hairy arms and legs, and women never fart!

Some damn common sense is needed with this girl and her parents.

Well, I?m male, and I didn?t know girls had a vagina, with all the parts and everything, until my first sex ed class in Year 5, when I was 9 or 10. I just thought they had a hole instead of a penis, which is technically true, except I didn?t know about the labia, ovaries, etc. I also thought that woman gave birth out of their stomach, a la Alien chest-burster scene.

I guess I'm lucky to be growing up in the 21st century.

That is rather unusual, yes.

I came into this thread expecting it to be about transgender issues.
As a transgender individual, I am desperately avoiding being offended by the amount of ignorance here, I dont think these people quite get what they are saying in the same context.
...I see no ignorance? These people seem to be talking about sex, as opposed to gender.
These are two entirely different matters.

Technically speaking, yes. However it is very easy to tell from the tone of the discussion that what they are actually refering to is sex. In an ideal discussion boy and girl would be substituted with male and female, but we all know what they mean in context.

Assume not malace when ignorance can instead be substituted.

I did indeed remember that proverb, I'm not mad about it, just wary.
