Did anyone bother to, I don't know, not focus so much on graphics so they can focus on other things? Anyone at all? If it took this long for Ubisoft, and others, to realize this, then that's just saddening.
Why not some balance between "dudes making game on their own" and "giant-ass studio making huge game"?
There's really small budget games, and really huge budget games. But there's very, very few right in the middle. So... why not go towards that middle ground? Games would be cheaper to make, and you'd need to sell less in order to get a profit. You'd also be able to sell it for less than AAA games, which would help sales. And if it's on the PC, lower graphics means more people can run it, which would increase your potential audience by quite a bit.
