So pretty graphics are the reason AI is so awful?

Did anyone bother to, I don't know, not focus so much on graphics so they can focus on other things? Anyone at all? If it took this long for Ubisoft, and others, to realize this, then that's just saddening.
If the games' graphics got worse, they wouldn't sell. There's no AAA market without good graphics. Plain and simple.
Who says they have to be AAA games?

Why not some balance between "dudes making game on their own" and "giant-ass studio making huge game"?

There's really small budget games, and really huge budget games. But there's very, very few right in the middle. So... why not go towards that middle ground? Games would be cheaper to make, and you'd need to sell less in order to get a profit. You'd also be able to sell it for less than AAA games, which would help sales. And if it's on the PC, lower graphics means more people can run it, which would increase your potential audience by quite a bit.

It's what I've been saying for years, and indeed what I said in response to WiiU not having a HD Zelda.

Games don't need to be realistic looking...

It's kind of what I've been saying about the hole 'FFVII remake' idiocy.

'We can't make it because it'd take 40 years to create to the quality of the tech demo!'

'Well, why does it have to look like that? Just make it a cartoony game then? No one plays original FVII for the graphics any more, we can be clear on that...'

In the end, I agree, but it's only because I've been saying it for years now...

I will look forward to the day when game AIs are so smart they beg you not to delete your installed game files out of fear that they'll perish.
So you mean the opposite of Mogworld :p

OT:I like this guy he seems to know what hes doing.

I'm not sure about the realism trend, but i agree game AIs need improving to allow for games with more strategy than "Press Right Trigger Repeatedly to With."

But I love beautiful looking characters walking into walls!

Seriously though, Some AIs are better than others but improvement is definitely necessary.

Doesn't matter how good a game looks, shitty AI will ruin whatever immersion you're feeling based on the graphics or aesthetics. Improved AI would be awesome even if it meant scaling back on the looks of a game. Personally I'd rather play a good game that looks alright than a shitty game that looks awesome.

Well, roll on next gen consoles with the much needed greater RAM and extra processing power (mostly RAM i suspect is the problem).

But yeah, any gamer who take the hobby seriously (a hardcore gamer if you use the term) will already know that gameplay and the elements that make up gameplay are more important than graphics.

Nail. Head. Blunt force trauma.

RAM is the key. The more RAM you have the more AIs of greater complexity you can run. AIs that react to a wider range of events, AIs that adapt to player tactics and so on. Essentially, not only produce AIs that interact with the game world more realistically but also AI that can challenge the player without the game designer pulling arbitrary bullshit out of their arses (ie, fucking cheating to provide challenge).

I'm all for better AI, and have been for ages. I still recall the first time an AI surprised me. It was in Half-Life, and while shooting across a room at a military guy (who was taking cover and returning fire appropriately), his two buddies were flanking me.

Now, it might have been scripted to run that way, but it was a nice change from "Oh hey - enemies. Now they will charge straight at me, or stand at range and shoot."

I want Ubisoft to make an awesome....like, I dunno, maybe Terminator game with a sentient game AI bundled with the Disk.

...yeah. yeah That can't go badly at all.

Jokes aside: Good luck on your endevour Ubisoft. I wish you luck. You'll NEED it if you intend to beat Valve to the punch. :p

It's true. AI can affect how a good the game you're playing is. I mean, in one of the games I've played a while back, it had cover-based shooting, but while I utilized it, the enemies did not. What looked like an interesting game soon turned into a glorified shooting gallery. Which game was that again...Oh, right. Mass Effect.
