So, I just got a computer, 12 days ago.
it is my first personal computer and I am incredibly happpy..however..this has happened on several
different occassions now.
my computer gets a randomly coloured screen with vertical black stripes going down...leaving me no choice but to shut it down...it later takes me several attempts to turn it on again. sometimes the computer just shuts down. out of nowhere. this happens when im playing games, and sometimes when im simply chatting on msn. please help

my system specs are:

Acer Aspire M5300
AMD Phenom II X6 1035T
6 GB DDR3-RAM
1500 GB hard drive
ATI HD5750 1024MB
HDMI & DVI

If it's brand new it's still under warranty. Do not try to fix it yourself. Do not open it up, you'll void the warranty and then the store won't help you. Take it back to the store straight away, they will fix or replace it.

What operating system are you running and do you know the power supply?

Calumon: Have you tried turning it... oh right.

Are there errors in the event log and also what are you doing when this occurs? Different things or the same thing everytime resulting in the colors? If I had to take a guess its probably a bad video driver or memory issue.

Well if its only been 12 days it SHOULD still be under warrenty. Just take it back to be fixed, rather than try fixing it yourself.

Dell desktops sometimes give similar problems, especially when they toss in high powered video cards. I recently bought one that, after getting home and setting up I found had a 350w power supply. The MINIMUM required for the video card they installed was 450, and according to ATI's support page it required a certain amount of voltage on the line connected to the VC, the smallest PSU I could find that met that requirement was 600w, which I promptly bought and installed. No problems since then, but lesson learned. If you're using it for gaming and it's shutting down on you, that may very well be the problem.

Sounds like a serious video card issue. If it's under warranty, you should have it replaced ASAP.

Check that all the cables are attached properly (sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how often you can find a cable that's only halfway into the relevant port). If everything seems to be in order, then take it back to the store, like everyone else said. 12 days means the warranty should still apply.

You're under warranty, don't do anything, just send it back and keep doing so until it's right.

But, sounds like the power supply isn't up to scratch.

An insufficient power supply can indeed often be the source of such hardware failures you seem to be experiencing. I'm speaking from experience here.

But again, if it's that new send it back.

As others have mentioned, if it's a factory built computer contact support. It does sound like the GPU is overheating though...

If you want me to try and work it out send me a PM, and I will run though what could be wrong and see if i can help, it's tedious to do it in a thread. (Or just get tech support (warranty) to do it)
