"Tired of coming back home from endless shifts at the Paranoá Hospital to find her house burglarized, she decided to take home security into her own hands. The Brazilian physician fancied a contaminated syringe fence would work against thieves!
?Fence With Blood. HIV Positive. Stay Away,? reads a sign under several dozen syringes taped to the fence surrounding this Brazilian doctor?s home.
She said in separate occasions, burglars have forced her door, entered her home and taken her lawn mower, her hair dryer, photo camera and also her television set. Neighbors are outraged, and have given her 5 days to remove the syringes, or she?ll be fined by the neighbor?s association.
The doctor said she won?t take them down, and police authorities won?t press the issue, as her fence is her private property, and modifying it does not constitute a crime."

I must admit that's a really good idea.

It's not a trap though. I just don't see why the woman hasn't tried razor wire. It's probably more effective than taped on syringes and less offensive.

I'm generally in support of vigilante crime deterrence, but I think bioweaponry is probably going a little too far...

I don't know if I'd call it a "good" idea.

I will say it's creative, however.

This. There're people with 12 foot brick walls with spikes and razor wire on top of them, in addition to security cameras in Perth; you don't need to have a lot of money to buy infected syringes though.

I wonder who would be stupid enough to fall for it. I mean seriously, they are syringes duck taped to a fence! They are obvious and stick out so they could easily be removed by an intruder; that is if the intruder is really that desperate to rob her.

It seems the reason she's being robbed though is because she makes a reasonable amount of money for her area. Also, on second reading it says they've "forced her door"...so why bother with reinforcing the fence at all? Get a better door.

Where did she get several dozen syringes of HIV+ blood? I know it says she's a doctor, but do the hospitals have stores of that stuff that any of the staff can dip into?
"Hey Bert, I'm having a party tonight, so can I get a box of malignant tumours, 3 litres of liposuction fat, a broken hip bone aaaand three dozen syringes of HIV+ blood?"
"Sure, you always have the greatest parties! Will we be playing lobotomy roulette again?"
"You know it!"

It's... creative anyway.
Wouldn't the syringes be easy enough to knock over before attempting to climb the wall?

I've a feeling her house is going to get broken into more know, a good few crazies will accept her challenge, that and she's advertised that she has possessions that are worth stealing.

She should buy a couple of big dogs. Dogs scare the shit out of people.

Seriously, have you ever been attacked by a dog? It's much more terrifying than a human.

Or homeless people! Everyone would get all awkward and walk away without trying to make eye contact, and feel guilty.

They're pretty easy to spot but if your gonna rob a place you generally try to do it quickly, if someone sees you pulling them down it would look pretty suspicious. And honestly I wouldn't want to handle sharps without proper gloves even with all the time in the world if I knew they had HIV positive blood.

The big flaw is that HIV doesn't survive all that well outside the body, syringes are one place it can survive a while but we're still talking days. So unless she's constantly swapping syringes the HIV threat would pretty quickly deteriorate. There is also a strong possibility that they're just random syringes, Brazil has a syringe swap program so drug users can get clean syringes. Odds are fair she just took a few sharps cans of them and put em up, so probably ~50% are HIV positive to begin with at best. Its more of a scarecrow than anything else.

It's hilarious in it's overkill. I do agree with other posters that leaping to bio-weaponry is a bit harsh to start, and that maybe razor wire with a similar sign might work. I have to hand it to her ingenuity though.

true enough but then she would have to buy them boxes or little houses to live in. The HIV syringes seems like less work.

I am reminded of these [http://www.goblinscomic.com/comics/20050724.jpg] two [http://www.goblinscomic.com/comics/20050725.jpg] strips from the wecomic Goblins.

All hail the power of the stick!

Wow. That's better than my idea of 15 car batteries hooked up to my fence. This woman deserves some praise for cleverness, but I'd hate to be the mailman. One wrong step and BAM! Aids.
