How else do you bring something towards somewhere if you don't take it away from somewhere else? They are synonyms. She was bringing the chili toward the cook-off, so I don't understand why that doesn't make sense.

When people use "seen" instead of "saw", though, now THAT'S something worth getting your knickers in a knot about! e.g. "I seen Bob bring some seven pod brain strain peppers for the chili cook-off!"

I never really thought about it, but I'd usually go by whether the person I was talking to was at the starting spot or the destination. For example, if a mate and I are going to someone else's place with food, I'd say to my friend that we'll take this food, take that folding chair etc. But if I was explaining this on the phone to someone at the destination, I'd say we'll be bringing this food, bringing that folding chair etc.

Also if someone is getting some of my offered loot to hold for an indefinite period of time it's take. If someone is coming with us and carrying something we might need in the indefinite future, it's bring.
