Brink: What exactly is the point of visual character customization?

I personally feel its an okay thing to advertise. What I like more is the fact that body type seems to be the only thing determining how many hits you can take and what not since you won't be stuck trying to look the way you want with armor that you hate. I remember going around Oblivion with a mithrial helm on even when it was severely outclassed, simply because I couldn't stand the look of the other armors.

It's less about the individual and more about the group. I'd rather be fighting alongside a team of unique individuals than a team of the same 4 guys repeated over and over. It helps to sell the atmosphere of the game, especially in a setting where both sides seem to be fairly disorganised.

This way I will also be able to recognise my friends (by which I mean actual friends, not team mates) by their outfits and unique character so that I can more easily coordinate with them. Certain unlocks will immediately show off my experience with the game to my team and also to my enemy. Finally, as said above, why do we dress up nice in real life? It certainly isn't so that we can see it ourselves.

Because it's interesting, and I would like to play a person I made rather than some generic soldier that everyone is playing to the point it looks like two groups of identical twins got into a fight.

It's just... kinda cool, I guess. Call me shallow but I love character customization. I much prefer running around in a skin that's unique to me.

The conclusion I reached from the other thread: it is designed for men who wouldn't be caught dead wearing matching outfits. Splash Damage is chasing the fashion-conscious crowd.

But I don't think it will matter that you can't see yourself most of the time, as long as they show your avatar whenever possible (in loading screens, every time you are killed &c.) that may be enough.

As for how others look, that will come down to how distinctive it is. If there is a distinctive enough armour that unlocks at higher levels, for example, you might tend to aim at players wearing that first. And you just know there is going to be some fool who gets really good at the game, then runs around killing people in a pink tank top and loud stiped pants with flares.

Besides, identical models? Please, that is so 2007.

What's the point of wearing different clothes each day if you're only going to see them in a mirror. I mean other than the cleanliness factor.

Because if they didn't, this game would be so far off my radar it's not even funny.

Didn't the video mention a difference in the body types? Like a "Heavy build" lets you take more damage and wield big ass weapons. Maybe this would transfer over to the clothing say the riot police gear gives you more protection but makes you more visible, and the sneak armour at the end offers less protection and less visibility.

Plus y'know. It's fun to play dress up.

Because I like deciding everything about my character.
Seriously, I loved Saints Row 2 for this.

Plus, stuff like clans playing together, or recording your UBER SKILLZ from a 3rd person perspective somehow maybe?

The whole point is that it's for social benefit, ie "look at me".

You could make the same argument for real life; why would someone dress well if they see themselves in first-person?

(Still, it would be funny if a game provided extensive character customization in a singleplayer-only experience where you never see yourself, just as a joke)
Sort of like Oblivion or Fallout 3?

What's the point of trying to sell a game on "customization" if you don't even add the most basic element of customization: GENDER.

It's just STUPID.

Character customization allows people to recognize each other. If there is one guy who keeps killing you and you want revenge, you can pick him out of a crowd of other enemies. More-so than in a game like counter-strike where there only 4 skins to choose from.

I'm a sucker for character customisation.

I'm the kind of guy who spends 45 minutes making my characters face look just right in games like Mass Effect and Oblivion.

That's all?
That's what they made such a "we have a bradazalillion characters herp da derp" fuss about?
You just pick from a handful of presets.
That's just pathetic compared to oblivion or mass effect.
You can tweak till your hearts content, the pre-sets exist to help the lazy...........

think about it this way: in CoD, every character model is the same. in Brink, its unlikely that two people will look the same, which is realistic. also, i believe that you need a Heavy body type to use heavy-weapons.

for starters it looks pwetty.
and while i agree that this is basically a pointless gimmick i know that i will be having ridiculous amounts of fun customizing my character. I will be playing Brink with the same group of people most of the time and one guy got all teary-eyed at the prospect that we could all give our characters the same gang tattoos and certain elements of clothing that will always be present whenever we play together. So one the one hand we would have this whole "we are legion" thing going but we will still have the option to not look like pallet-swapped clones.

and yes, i also spend more time painting and customizing my warhammer armies than taking them to battle.
