What was wrongwith the world in Mirrors Edge. Seemed orderly to me. And what's wrong with being monitored, you only have to fear it of you're in the wrong.

Safety from Terrorists (maybe) vs Freedom and Privacy

Not worth it. Government: Get Off My Internets!

This particularly grates since a few weeks/months ago there was an article on the BBC website about some rather happy policemen who had found a way to prosecute bothersome teenage youths using newly passed anti-terror legislation, whereas before they had been having a hard time making prosecutions stick. You just know this new initiative is going to be used (and abused) for far more than just anti-terrorist monitoring. Police are going to want to use it on the the general public to find criminals "because its there". And then what happens if criminals find a way in and access all that lovely exploitable data? The government has a poor track record with keeping this sort of thing well protected.

Legislation creep eats away at personal privacy. The public shouldn't be scared into being forced to accept this sort of thing.

I'm wondering how stupid the government thinks terrorists actually are? Do they really believe that Osama Bin Laden actually sets his Facebook status to "...is making cunning plans to destroy the western infidels"
Though that would be something to see.
Yeah actually, if I were Osama bin Laden (and I'm not)*, that's probably exactly what I would do! :p

*Or am I???
I'll be 10 minutes. Going to try and set up a facebook account as Osams Bin Laden...

Edit: It's already been done...twice.

If you say "I want to kill the President" "Jihad" "Osama Bin Laden" etc on your phone / text / email it HAS to be read by someone to check it's not a threat. They've also got like every email ever on a big computer and other scary stuff.
Urban legends are fun aren't they?

I find it invasive enough that my computer stores my internet browsing history, let alone that the freaking Government wants to keep tabs on everything everyone looks at, who they speak to, and what they're saying. Where the hell is privacy gone?

Yea, but knowing America that's probably true.

Wow, a gamer government guy. He's with them. *queue scary music*

I kid, I kid, as if that wasn't obvious, but this is still the internet, so you don't know what people might think. (Jihad, Osama, terrorist take that UK government.)

That MUST only be read in an overly camp voice.

If Britain does become a police state, I may try to hop over the Atlantic to help oppress the people, as it sounds like alot of fun.

On topic, I have to say that terrorists cannot use Skype to plan anything...I use it for my Russian class, and so many of the calls have to constantly be redone because everyone keeps breaking up.

Other than that, I am sure all governments are watching everything like Facebook. The Brits just get to be told about it.

And now for something stupid and kind of on topic...

I think a good way to have the government types stop surveying you is to dance nude in their eyesight...though this can lead to getting arrested for entirely different reasons than terrorism.

*waggles fingers* Scary stuff of scariness. Like the Ark of the Covenant
I kid.

I'd imagine they comb a hell of a lot of email, but permanent storage in one location would be a bit silly. Numbers in the high petabytes would be required to store it and any type of long-term analysis would take damn impressive supercomputers.

That being said, I know someone who had a wiretap card replace the normal one in the exchange box for complex reasons involving North Koreans. Only found out about it because it played merry hell with an answering machine. :D
Well, it's quite obvious that Britain doesn't keep all of its information gained from spying at one central location, otherwise there wouldn't have been all those data slips a while back.

We keep it all on the London underground. People hack in and find it occasionally.
