Since you enjoy Final Fantasy I'd recomend the Grandia series. The three games they made for PS/PS2(fuck Grandia Xtreme) are all great with a really fun combat system.
Grandia III is definetly the weakest in the series, but still a good game.

Grandia is my FAVORITE rpg out there. Beats FFVI and VII in a heartbeat.
Seriously. Was I the only one who really got attached to Sue? not even Aerith or Terra could get me to care as much as for the characters in Grandia.

If you haven't played their The Walking Dead, go out and get it now! My 2012 GOTY, in my opinion one of the best games I've ever played, and for the most part has had universal acclaim.

The new Humble Bundle has some great games in it. For $5 you can get Bastion, Limbo, Mark of the Ninja, three games I recommend, as well as a bunch others that admittedly haven't played. Even just one dollar will get you Mark of the Ninja.

The Walking dead was the only new game I played last year I believe. Never cried as much as when I played that game.

There's something about games that make me care for kids. I hate kids (really. I trip them over on the street when no one's watching and blow into new born babies' face so they choke just a liiiiiittle bit. Try it it's hilarious), yet Grandia and the Walking Dead have made me care for two little girls. I'm amazed

i think the grim fandango was pretty good.
challenging, entertaining and being quite old it is cheap.
if you like point n click i would recommend you give it a go.
i picked it up years ago when i was going through a phase of buying random games i had never heard of and found it to be a little gem.

by the way, i loved final fantasy 7. i played it on the playstation (cant recall if it was 1 or 2)
i wouldn't mind getting it off steam or something. do you think it will run on a laptop with no graphics card?

Dark Souls is a good one to try. It's more unforgiving than it is hard but you should still keep in mind that you will die. A LOT.

If you want to try new things, why not give a new genre a shot? I can personally recommend X3: Reunion and it's successor X3: Terran Conflict. X4 is coming out in November and it looks positively amazing. They're all open world space exploration games where you fly your own ship around the galaxy being awesome.

Sword of the Stars 1 and 2 are turn-based 4X games (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) with real-time combat between turns. The available factions are unique and interesting and the tech tree that you research is dynamic. Each race has their own signature technologies and different chances of having certain techs available for research. Try and get all of the expansions for them, as they add more technologies and functions that drastically improve and enrich the gameplay.

Warframe. Ninja Robots with guns in SPACE. 'nuff said.

Firefall is a fun MMOFPS that actually works pretty well. The world is colorful for a post-apocalyptic scenario, the enemies nicely varied, and the 'class system' is well-rounded and sound.

Jak and Daxter and the Ratchet and Clank games, along with Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. Only buy the Insomniac and Naughty Dog developed games of those franchises. Try also the Legacy of Kain series, as that's a pretty good one also.

Because it is old you've likely played it, but you should see if you can find a copy of the DS version of ChronoTrigger. In addition to being the great classic game it has added animated cut scenes that I don't think they put in any of the other ports(for some odd reason)

Hey y'all! I've gotten kind of bored of video games these past few years. I'm stuck in a place where I only buy and play old games that I've played a million times before. Guess I'm too narrow minded to try out new crap.

Well, I'd like to change that. And I'll need your help in order to do it.
I'd like for you to recommend a game that you think I'd enjoy. Or something that you enjoy a great deal.

The games I play regularly are: Final Fantasy series, Harvest moon, Resident evil, Mario, Zelda, point and click games (a lot of them) and...hmm. Heroes of might and magic I suppose.

So surprise me! What should I play, that will get out of this pit of repetition I'm in? Doesn't have to be a newly released game.

I own a NDS, Wii, PS3 and everything beneath that generation of consoles.

Ehh.. lots of things jumping out of the dark at you and loud *jumpy* noises made me quit and uninstall in the first 10 minutes. I'd rather the shallowness of guns than the shallowness of as many scary things as possible crammed into a game.

Why not try a text-only game? If you haven't played one before it's a good way to break the tyranny of graphics-only games, a completely different experience and definitely will broaden your mind. I recommend A Mind Forever Voyaging, Bureaucracy or if you like horror, Anchorhead.

I'm tempted to recommend something really niche, since you asked to "broaden" your mind, so I will. If you really want to branch out, play Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory on your PS3. It's the third game in the series, though you don't really need to know anything about the other games in the series to understand what's going on. You might want to play the second game, Mk. 2, but you don't need to. Just don't bother with the first one. In any event, it's not great gameplay-wise, but it's a funny, charming JRPG that I found very enjoyable. Just don't take it seriously at all. It's actually the first series I played to start broadening my own horizons, though I started with the first game, which was charming but not good. It was pretty bad. (NOTE: Unskippable did a couple episodes of this game. If you want to see the opening cutscenes to help decide if you'd like it, go check them out. I thought they were hilarious.)

If you want an RPG with a little bit more of a retro flair, go with Etrian Odyssey. The first three games are for DS, and the latest 2 are for 3DS. I've only played #4 and the demo of the Etrian Odyssey: Untold, which are the 3DS ones. They're pretty difficult, and they have some cool dungeon crawler mechanics and some character customization skill-wise.

A couple other great RPGs are Persona 3, which you can get for PS2, PS3 and PSP, and Persona 4, which is on PS2 and Vita. Both of them are absolutely stellar, though I prefer Persona 4 because of the far improved gameplay mechanics, though I think Persona 3 has better atmosphere.

Play horror! Trust me, I did a month ago, and it's a whole new experience. I've only played like, two legitimate horror titles, but it's garnered an interest in games like Outlast. Plenty of running, there will be. I got change of pace, mainly a faster one.

Point & Click:

1. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (As good/ better than the films)

2. Gemini Rue (Excellent cyberpunk noir)

3. Full Throttle (Just watch the trailer on youtube...Really does it justice)

4. Lost Horizon (Much like an updated Indy, amazing artwork, quite fun)


Platformers:

1. Another World (Stunningly original, immersive, cinematic side-scroller)

2. Treasure Adventure Game (A free, fun little metroidvania kinda game)

3. Rochard (Fun 80's styled Sci-fi sidescroller/puzzler with an awesome soundtrack)

4. Journey (An ethereal experience, very relaxing)

First Person Perspective:

1. Metro 2033, and sequel Last Light (Amazingly atmospheric, story driven Horror/Survival/FPS)

2. The Thief Trilogy (Basically invented the Stealth Genre as we know it. Graphically dated, but amazing gameplay and story)

3. Penumbra: Overture (Deeply unnerving and scary Survival Horror)

4. Realms of the Haunting (Original FPS combined with Point & Clickery, and actually GOOD FMV cut-scenes)


RPG's

1. The Witcher Series (Starts off slow, but becomes rather engrossing. Recommended to mod the combat)

2. Vagrant Story (a JRPG with an interesting combat mechanic, cool cut-scenes and story)

3. Jade Empire & Anachronox (Haven't played them, but look quite promising)

4. Deus Ex (But, Surely you've played this already...Right?!)

Flight Sim:

1. Pretty much the entire Wing Commander Series (Very fun WWII in space vibe, really benefits from a Joystick)

2. IL-2 Sturmovik (Check out Jefmajor's Let's Play of it, stunningly realistic WWII fighter pilot sim)

Open World:

1. Mafia (Splendid recreation of 1930's America, interesting characters and world)

2. Shenmue (Nothing like it before or since. takes 'open world' to a whole new level)

3. Sleeping Dogs (Haven't played much of it, but it seems pretty fun, and exploring China is very neat)


Stratagy:

1. Silent Storm S2 (Basically X-Com in WWII)

2. Jagged Alliance 2 (Turn based, squad tactical country liberating action!)

3. Rome: Total War (Massive real time ancient battles of a grand scale, very moddable!)

4. As others have said, Valkyria Chronicles

the Dawn of War series is still considered an awesome strategy game by many, if pc games are okay. (ftr, you're gonna want DoW1.) It came out early 2000s, so your PC should probably still be able to handle it.

Tales of Vesperia is still one of my favorite RPGs... actually, any of the Tales games are good.
