Ashamed? Hell no, I'm PROUD to be a brony, they're the sweetest, kindest, most creative and inspirational fandom I've ever had the privilege to be a part of, even if there are a few nutters around. I am kinda shy about it though, mostly because I'm in the UK where the show doesn't air and bronydom has no presence at all in common culture. I've not yet brought it up in conversation but would gladly admit to being a brony if anyone asked me.

Sorry if this was a bit long but the OP said it was for science so I thought I'd give a thorough response.

I haven't been ashamed of anything I enjoy since I dunno, the beginning of High School? I've got a few t-shirts, so I guess I'm fairly flamboyant about the whole thing. But like others have said, I'm not defined by the fandom. I do watch other things, you know.

That being said, my flatmate is a brony as well - he won't ever talk about it. Closet brony.

I am not ashamed at all of the fact that I enjoy watching a cartoon.

I am though rather closet with regards to the matter because I do worry about what people think of me and I don't like awkwardness that comes about when you try to explain exactly why you are. I own none of the toys, no apparel or accessories that are either actually Hasbro merchandise or stuff people make and sell online.

Not only is this due to the fact I personally feel there are better ways for me to spend my money; (like giving it to another company for figures *cough* Games workshop *cough*) on food and other things I actually need, go go Uni student. But because I of my issue with how people think of me. Oh there is also the fact that any of the stuff actually appeals to me in any way shape or form, although I do own some MLP badges that sit nicely on my change bag... that sits in the back of my desk draw and very rarely left out.

Although when people do actually find out, normally by the conversation being brought up about internet Fandoms or I'm directly asked will I actually reveal that I am, but I usually end it with the statement 'And that's all you'll hear about the subject cause I know your not really into it... etc etc' (same thing can be applied to when I'm asked about Furries).

So really I suppose you could, by what I've written here, say that I am.

Personally I prefer to see my self just thinking about others and my self cause I know people like 'them' exist and I really don't want to ever get compared to them.

If I'm with other 'bronies' though I'm more then happy to express my enjoyment of the show.

For clarification by 'them' I mean both the people that relate any topic to MLP (even the god damn weather) and those that enjoy the more explicit stuff out there.

Strangely I was talking about this very thing the other day. While I don't play tabletop Warhammer anymore for a few reasons (not for...12 or so years roughly) I avidly read the 40k books and any lore I can get my hands on and play all the games.

I've been discussing how good the Horus Heresy books, a series I'm a fan of, are and how they've even gotten some critical acclaim and made bestseller lists. I talk about them with others and people read the chat and say things like "that sounds really interesting, what are you talking about?" mention the words "Warhammer" or "40k" and you get "Oh, nevermind then, forget I asked".

It's puzzling. Even people into the sci-fi ish genre who would probably really like it wont go near it because of the reputation of the extended universe it belongs to.

Interesting topic potential but I think the title is going to make it go south fairly quickly. If it does go bad or just stagnate I suggest remaking it with a less...divisive title

Edit-late to the party, see with a title like this I think that's all your going to get. Well that and maybe the opposing view holding people.
ok I have no use for 40k, I tried reading one of the books (don't remember which one) and I wasn't able to finish. For what I thought would be an exciting universe it was boring as hell. The only part I remember was the retarded amount of detail it went into about one of the characters PICKING HIS NOSE. It wasn't long after that I said "screw this."

I think the whole "nevermind, forget I asked" comes from people seeing WH40k fanboys that won't STFU about it, and want to drag it into EVERY DAMN THING.

I know that not everyone that's into 40k is like that. It just takes the ones who can't go 2 hrs without screaming "for teh emprah!" to make the franchise look bad.

Dude, im up to my neck in pony related shit, im literally wallowing in it but ya know what?
Honestly, ive been into cartoons my whole life and NO ONES gonna convince me other wise. Same goes for Adventure Time, Flapjack, Chowder, Regular Show and most recently Gravity Falls.

My only complaint at the mo with cartoons is that theres an aweful lot of 'cute' funny going around. I grew up in the 90's and unlike a fair amount of peeps my age who seem to think 'FINGZ WILL NEVAR BE DAT GOOD AGAINZ!!!' I admit that certain niche's have been left very unfufiled. I can't remember the last time there was a good action heavy cartoon... Legend of Korra had alot of the good stuff but thats still only one show, which is nothing when compared to the 'dark' kids shows from the 90's like Gargoyles, Batman TAS and Beyond, not to mention my personal fave Samurai Jack.

No. Not ashamed.

Whether I wear a pony shirt out to public events depends more on whether I want to spend 20/30 minutes explaining the show to people. Sure I could just leave it at "its a good show" that won't do squat as far a relieving any awkward feelings people might have. It's not like wearing a doctor who shirt and simply describing to new comers "its a good sci to show". Everyone and the grandma knows what My Little Pony is. That's the problem.

Well, let me put it like this. I don't walk down the street in my Pinkie Pie shirt, but that's only because I don't have one.

I don't talk about MLP with friends and family (barring one cousin) because they're not into it. Usually don't talk about it much at all, to be honest, but I'm not ashamed. Listen to pony music (fan and official) in the car and on my PC all the time.
I used to get harrased by one of my friends about it, but then I mocked WWE (seriously, wrestling is more "gay" than MLP is) and now he shuts up. Other friends and family couldn't care less.
I don't usually go out of my way to tell people I like MLP, but it may crop up in a conversation when they see my phone wallpaper or whenever. It's not something I dwell on or put into people's faces.

I'm not ashamed.
Most of my friends and family know about it and most of THEM don't really care. In fact I did my college coursework about the fandom, and for the majority of my class it was their first time hearing of the whole thing.
Online I'll use pony avatars and stuff, but I largely avoid bringing it up in conversation other than in stuff that actually INVOLVES the fandom. I mostly do this out of respect for those who are annoyed by the more over-the-top parts of the fandom.
IRL I don't talk much about the fandom, but I will establish myself as an MLP fan (I'm not really a big fan of the term "brony") early on in a new friendship to avoid awkwardness down the line, but I'm not the type that rubs it in everyone's face. It's just a quiet kind of "just so you know, I happen to like this" kind of thing.
I do creative work in the fandom, which leads to me posting my work on social networks regularly but I haven't had many complaints about that.

I could point out the irony in the last 3 paragraphs of this considering the general stereotype surrounding bronies, but I don't think I will.

...Except I just did. Dammit!

No.

The same way I'm not ashamed of gaming or liking bacon in the presence of vegetarians. I do what I want because I enjoy it.

Why would I feel ashamed in liking a cartoon? It's nobody else's business what I watch.
Pretty much this. I'm not a brony myself. But you should give no fucks about other people's opinions of your fandom.

Do what you want.

Laugh at the people who hate you for it.

You lot immediately leapt to mind (the bulk of the article is about Warhammer as a tabletop game, and how other nerds have looked down on me for trying it) as a marginalised group for liking a cartoon despite geek culture as a whole celebrating shows like Transformers or Thundercats. I felt weird playing Warhammer, as if I were doing something wrong or shameful, just because I experimented with a game considered "lame" by the mainstream, and even other nerds, but I can't figure out why one has been labelled better than the other.
Really? I don't dislike Warhammer because it is somehow nerdier or shameful. I dislike it because A) I like D&D rather than Wargaming and B) Games Workshop are a bunch of assholes who overcharge for an inferior product. Not the rules, mind; the overpriced and underwhelming miniatures.

Oh, and I sometimes look down on 40K players because they can't shut the fuck up about the Emperor or Heresy. I get it - it's kinda funny. But what was funny the first few times stops being funny after the 100th time.

So, to sum up, I have no problem with people playing Warhammer as long as they don't Meme at me constantly. I just don't want to play because, IMO, Games Workshop can go fuck themselves. That's not the players' fault.

As far as MLP - I'm a girl, so no one thinks it's weird for me to like ponies.

I'll talk to friends and family (even got my girlfriend and siblings watching it) but I probably won't go out and buy a shirt or anything like that.

Just cause a viewer doesn't meet the demographic of a product doesn't mean they can't enjoy it.

For instance, Juno is my favourite movie but I doubt it was aimed at teenage boys.

Very baity title.

If I could ride around on Twilight and frolic in those kick-ass meadows near Everfree, I would.

My parents, friends, and all the gods of the multiverse could be watching and I'd be having the time of my life.

Yes, I'm ashamed of myself. No, it has nothing to do with me loving MLP. I don't see a problem with it, and will gladly not associate with someone who does. I think just as little of them as they think of me.

I am not a brony, but in the end, I am not ashamed of any of my interests. I LARP; I play Pokemon and other "kids' games"; I read and write shameless slash fanfiction; I go to cons dressed as random characters; most of my hobbies, when I look back, are "embarrassing" to the mainstream population.

I don't care. Because seriously, what would I conform to? I think it's silly to watch sweaty guys kick a ball around all day, but if that's your bag, I have no right to judge. Same as no one has any right to judge me when I'm running around in costume. I have walked around the streets of major American cities with monster makeup, or anime costume, or what have you. Watch how few shits were given those days.

Seriously, quit picking on MLP. Geeks are basically doing this stupid kyriarchy thing where they want to at least not be on the *entirely bottom* section of the pecking order, so because they're already pretty low by mainstream standards, they have to shove someone under their feet to feel better than the lowest possible rung of the ladder. Ergo, somehow the geek community decided that bronies were somehow "worse" than everyone else in the geek community (are bronies the new furries, in terms of teasing?), and it makes them feel superior to uphold this.

No one's fooling anyone, you guys. We've all got "weird" hobbies, I don't care whether it's watching football (objectively, this is kind of odd, seriously), or costuming as princesses, or making fursuits, or watching MLP. We're all the same.
