Personally, I enjoy it because it is simply good, honest-to-God entertainment.

There's no agenda being pushed, there's no over-the-top humor (which is fine in moderation), and there is absolutely nothing to find offensive or in bad taste. In addition, it's quite cute (which I can say even as an adolescent male), and I personally find it quite funny.

In addition, it's one of the few animated shows that I've seen in quite a while to have actual EFFORT put into it (not saying that there haven't been other shows recently that have been made with care). I feel that this truly shows, especially as the series moves forward. Not to mention, the animation is truly incredible for Flash.

Finally, what it all boils down to is that the characters are well-rounded and very enjoyable to watch and to see play off of each other. I never thought I'd say that about a show originally designed to sell toys, but here I am saying it.

My girlfriend and I watch it ironically because we are douchebag hipsters.
You're no longer hip bro, sorry. It's too mainstream now. Unfortunate you had to jump on this bandwagon so late. Now you're just ironic and not a hipster douchebag. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I watch it for the plot.
Animation is great, art-style is great, voice acting is great, writing is great, humor is great, and there are lots of pop-culture references in the show.
Also, it's a nice break from, for example, constant news stories about murder around the globe, or some other depressing thing on T.V. I like to be happy, this is happiness in show form.
EDIT:

I actually agree. The first episode is rather... dubious in quality. However, it does get better, like the 11th Doctor's run or High School of the Dead.

Watch the rest. It does become great.

Also what do you mean by 'say why it is simply personal taste'? It just is. Some people just like it and they don't have to justify that to you or anyone. Subjectivity my friend.

The animation is sublime, I honestly can't think of anything that's ever matched it for detail and smoothness in animation. Obviously, it would be pretty superficial if that were the only reason to like it, so there's the fact that it's genuinely funny at times, has great voice acting, and makes some pretty great references for the more savvy, like the whole 'star ponies' ending to the season 2 opening episodes.

It knows subtlety, which is a rarity (Oh I made a funny).

Personally, I think Adventure Time is a better choice if you want to watch kids cartoons.

Quality animation. Realized and sympathetic characters. Clever dialogue. Plots that are not entirely insulting to the intellect. Amusing set pieces and gags. Colorful and happy and improves my mood. Especially enjoyable with a glass of wine. What's not to love?

Mostly because it's a bright spot of innocence in a sea of grimdark, but that wouldn't count for much if it weren't actually good. FiM has a diverse cast with personalities that I can identify with; each character has their own strengths and weaknesses. The writing is not particularly complex, but I am not looking for complexity, and neither is it offensively patronizing. The animation is fluid (as more frames have been individually drawn than is common in most cartoons these days), the character models (while appearing simple) actually have a surprisingly large number of moving parts, and they have a wide variety of poses (many of which are custom-created for a specific scene and then never used again). Oh, and the music. I. love. the. music

(I usually embed those links in the staccato words, but I can't be bothered right now.)

Those first two are sound-alikes for Broadway songs, and just listen to the actual professional chorus and orchestra in At the Gala. If I didn't know they were from a kid's show I'd never be able to tell by the quality alone.

And while I'm here I may as well add a usergroup link:

I recommend that anyone who joins uncheck "Chat Notifications" when prompted as group chat tends to be quite active.

You could easily have answered this question yourself by using the searchbar, or y'know, google.

But to answer the question; I like the art style and characterization.
Every time you comment your avatar makes it better.

After watching the first episode of MLP,I still don't know why people love it so much. I mean there is nothing wrong with it,is just i don't see why so many people like it,and before you say it's personal taste, please say why.

Example:My friend thinks halo is meh but doesn't understand why I like it,so I explain that I like the multiplayer and story of the series.
Keep watching. That's all you need to do.

I can quantify this into a simple analogous situation; Disney Pixar. Disney Pixar have been able to make films aimed at children (and they are, this isn't a point that can be debated)and add to them themes and characters that adults can also enjoy (arguably the adults are the real target audience). Good example of a mature theme is Pixar's UP (the first 20 minuets to be precise), the point show there are clearly only for adults to understand and appreciate.

Also with Pixar is an undeniable quality and maturity (When I say maturity I don't mean adult content I mean it does not indulge in "potty humour") of Plot, Character, animation and voice acting. All these points are inside MLP, and yes the "target" audience is more specific than Pixar films but it doesn't stop the show from being incredibly enjoyable.

Music is also used in the show to brilliant affect without being cheesy (well most of the time) and trite.

It all boils down to being able to look past an exterior and view true quality underneath, also for most people it is NOT an ironic thing. People who do something only for irony are hipsters and should be shot on sight.

Long answer put together with careful thought.
Radoh said:
Alright, the question is how long until this thread gets locked down.

OT:It's animation is great, its characters are fleshed out and realized without being stereotypes, the voice acting is phenomenal, the songs are good, the subject matter is excellent, they don't treat the audience like idiots, and the Creator Lauren Faust made it with the intent that adults will be watching it with their daughters, thus she didn't dumb it down.
Lauren Faust was also able to make this happen by telling Hasbro that she wasn't just going to make a twenty minute commercial for the toy-line and actually make people care about what they are buying. Plus, she was very involved in the making of Powerpuff Girls, Codename Kids Next Door, and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, all of which are quite good.
And beyond that, it wasn't supposed to be good. It was supposed to continue the trend MLP suffers from and go from acceptable, to not good, to poor, to OMG Y U SO BAD, and so on. To have it not only break the trend but to be good has juxtaposed it to a new level and the pure shock of it not being terrible was enough to garner itself an initial audience to get a foothold in the older fans.

Also, since you're fairly new I feel I should tell you that these sort of threads are not really something that gets smiled upon and that you should totally use the search function as I have been apart of no less than a dozen of these threads with the same exact question.
Short sweet answer from the heart.

We can never be truly free of these threads can we...

Look, some people just like ponies and friendship and shit.

That's it.
Well we have our Champions!

As for me. I saw a whole lot of pony avatars all over the place, asked what was up with all them ponies, and Radoh there answered my question while also giving me a link to episode one.

Why did I like it? In the first 5 minutes Mrs. Faust grabbed my heart with a death grip by getting me to immediately like Spike the dragon by having him deal with something I really really really really really HATE! Spelling. Also, the later episodes were pretty good too.

So there you have it. It was a combo of artistic appreciation, and finding a connection with a character right away.
And also hatred. F@#K you spelling. I will murder you in HELL!

no we're still missing something oh i know the MIP drinking game like the Steven king drinking game but has been known to killed more people. the rules of the game: take a shot every time you see someone has put something like "i'm a brony" or "i'm anti brony" until you die or pass out
