Indigo, this really isn't going to be a Nordic 'Opeth and In Flames' sort of game. It's old-school. Motorhead, Metallica and Maiden are more what the designers are shooting for, methinks. An adventure with roadies, groupies, and marshall stacks turned up to 11. Classic melodic metal, not the newer bleaker stuff that's cropped up over the last few years. That's what the average joe thinks of when he hears the word 'metal- Bruce Dickinson hollering about the number of the beast on stage.

As for Jack Black- the dude's a famous actor, his love for old-school rock is well known, and he has a distinctive, funny voice. He may not be as 'Metal' as someone like Mikael Akerfeldt (or however you spell it), but he knows the source material, and has the charisma to potentially pull the role off. I seriously think you're getting your knickers into far too much of a twist over this. They could have done this entirely with no-name voice actors.
when did I ever say I wanted it to center itself around Black Metal? Hell, this argument started because I wanted Dickinson to be the main character instead of Jack Black, as hes arguably funnier (as anyone who saw him on the latest tour can attest to). I then said i would have also liked Brendon Small, cause I think Metalocalypse is funny. How did you get "It must center around Black metal" from?
Where did he mention anything remotely black metal?

Firstly, Opeth and In Flames are Swedish bands belonging to the genres of Progressive Death Metal and Melodic Death Metal, respectively. Nothing at all to do with Black Metal.

Secondly, all he said was that the game is most likely to be based on the old school metal scene, as popularised by bands like Priest and Maiden, and I agree.
Exactly. I was also commenting (too vaguely perhaps) on Indigo's notion that certain people involved in the game 'aren't metal enough', an awfully elitist attitude if you ask me. Jack Black is aware enough of the classics to 'warrant', for lack of a better word, a place in the game. If he isn't aware of the more niche trappings of metal, well, the game was never shooting for them in the first place. Old-school, that's the key phrase.

Also, bitching how one particular singer (who was never slated to be the main character in any case) 'lost' the role to a comedic actor is ridiculous. Does the fact that Master Chief isn't voiced by Vin Diesel ruin Halo for me? No, of course not. There are millions of actors and singers who I'd want to voice the dude in Brutal Legend. However, I'm perfectly happy with ol' Jacky.
I'm simply noting that I would prefer if Bruce Dickinson or David Scott Mustaine were the voice of the lead characters, just like everyone else. Its not like I'm going to boycott this game because of their absence, just saying it would have been even more awesome if either of them were the lead characters (or in it at all)
Meh. They're both metal legends, but I don't think they'd make very remarkable voice actors.

Personally, if GTA4 had a character voiced by Paris Hilton, I wouldnt like it, and I'd be annoyed that she was getting more money thrown at her, and polluting the game, but I certainly would still buy it.

The idea that anyone would go 'hey its the greatest game eve- oh Jack Black, I'm not buying that crap' is just nuts.

Bruce Dickinson may well have done a good job, he's an intelligent, witty man, and a fine entertainer with a good speaking voice, but most metal lead singers are not voice actors.

Saying Lemmy would be a great voice actor because he's a metal legend is like saying he'd be a great brain surgeon because he's got talented guitar hands.

I'm all for giving the job to an actor personally, tho personally I'd have preferred it to be a good unknown actor.

Alright, back up. Do you think they are likely to divide the game into areas based upon to Metal subgenres?
no. and i say that because design wise, the idea would be too similar to Psychonauts and i can't see Schafer doing something similar to what he has done in the past.

it would be funny though if the level design was a combination of Dante's Inferno and various metal references relating to each level of hell. but who knows, i mean it's tim Schafer so anything could happen.

Its older than Tenacious D, so if he's aware of Tenacious D, he'd be aware of Norways biggest cultural export.
if knowledgable information worked in a linear progressive fashion, then yes you would be right.

however, his referencial depth is probably deeper than a casual metal listener but more ingrained in classic metal rather than modern iterations. and Tenacious D has mainstream appeal, so Tim could know about them but not know anything about In Flames. i'm not holding my breath for any comedic references to "Mayhem".
The problem here is finding something funny to say about mayhem, not finding a way to add the mainstream appeal. 60% of all their (ex)members are dead or in jail and they don't seem to do anything other then promoting satanism and releasing music about promoting satanism. And stabbing eachother ofcourse.

What i would like to see ingame is a level based arround what pretty much every Rhapsody of Fire song is about. Magical forest, unicorns, dragons etc. I'm pretty sure Tim could do something funny with that.

If it comes out - word is its been canceled
It hasn't been cancelled, it's currently in limbo, no word of cancellation yet, so no need to freak out.

Double Fine has stated that "Brutal Legend is fine".
Just so you know.

edit: Sierra has confirmed that Double Fine is very close on signing a new deal with another yet to be named publisher, but it will most likely not come out this year.
I can sleep soundly now.
