Nail, right on the head.

The demo shows NOTHING of what the main game plays like. I bought it thinking I'd enjoy the fuck out it.

It is literally the ONLY game in the entire history of my gaming career that was so below my expectations that I returned it.
Indeed. Had the entire game been like the demo, it would have been awesome. New skills, new summons, maybe new weapons. But instead you get a lame, poorly made version of an RTS with third person elements about 2 hours into the game.

Don't get the hate, if you like metal and Tim Schafer you'll like the game.

I'm a fan of strategy games and didn't find the battles baffling or anything, I think it's rather creative that it's not another spam mouse 1 game. The voice acting and the soundtracks are fuckin A as well.

I think most of the people who complain massively about the game are not really into the themes.

I really loved this game, and I don't even like metal. It had a charming aesthetic with the art style, soundtrack, characters and enemies all being entertaining in a way I haven't seen outside of Borderlands. Basically it has personality. The gameplay is quite fun- I never got bored, and even grinded through all the item hunts to get 100% completion.
Doesn't have a lot of depth, but then a game doesn't need that to be good or fun. I'll agree with IGN's 9/10.

I get the themes, I love Tim Schafer, the writing, voice acting and graphical style are good. Also most of the game play is cool.

However, the sub-par RTS battles (I normally like RTS too) were so awful that I abandoned the game and never went back to it.

Being a metalhead I thought the game would be tons of fun to play, but when it went from action to RTS it really died to me. Had the game for almost three years I think... and never felt like starting it up again(didn't get very far in the game). If they would've stuck with the action combat the game would've been great imo. I really dislike RTS though, so perhaps I'm biased.

I guess if you're into metal, or at least know some of it's culture and characters, and doesn't mind RTS sections in third person you'll like it.

Though I can see where critics are coming from, I think the game was charming enough to warrant one playthrough at least.
There's content that can feel spread thin later on, but I still enjoyed the setting, music, and characters.

Did anyone else here enjoy the RTS sections enough to try the multiplayer? I never understood why they were hated so much.
I don't think I disliked it as much as some people, as I liked the theme of being able to rise above the battlefield as well as drive through it, but I could find them fairly insubstantial as things progressed. Though I didn't really have any strategy other than making as many troops as I could to charge at the nearest enemy structure.

Yeah, I loved them too and I played my fair share of them online, Drowning Doom being my faction of choice.

I think people hate them because they can't wrap their head around the fact that they weren't actually about real time strategy and that for the most part precision control isn't required at all. People complain about getting the same old stuff over and over, but when they're presented with something that's actually different they just find the nearest thing to compare it to and call it a bad version of that.

So while I can't comment on how good the PC version is, I loved the game.
I think the game should take part of the blame because it's so unexpected when the RTS sections come (not to mention the marketing made it seem like a different game), it's jarring. I had that feeling when playing, and that was years after release, after everyone (me included) knew it had this RTS part.

Once I got the hang of the RTS part of the game, though, I loved it. I already did love the world and characters and so on but I think the RTS part of the game is really enjoyable and the game would have fared better if the transition was planned a bit better.

Overall though I love the game, I didn't think I was going to like it so much but I did. It's not a perfect game, but it's quirky and has a lot of character.
Well, I'd blame the marketing for it in particular. The fact that they just took the first 30 minutes of the game, chopped it off and made it into a demo was definitely a bad choice. It's just that I still hear people complaining about it now when they've had plenty of time to get used to it and realise what the differences between it and a normal RTS are. It can't still be a surprise to people, right?

I don't think it's perfect either, it just sometimes seems really hypocritical that people on here will complain about something being different when it takes them by surprise, or when it isn't a return to the older way of doing things. I know it's not really fair to accuse people of hypocrisy when it might be completely different people on the same site expressing those opinions, but that's the impression I get.
