So today I am ordering the parts for my new PC. I thought I would get some last minute opinions on it. I'm pretty sure everything is compatable.

Ignore the budget in the title, the first draft of it was made a while ago.
Also, this is my first build so any tips that I should use would be greatly appreciated.

just have dell make one, you'll get more stuff for less than it costs to buy one.not sure about the parts, but assembling a computer can be difficult, otherwise,go with a built in fan so the wires won't melt

Newegg is a little expensive for certain things. Honestly nowadays if your going to order everythign online you might as well just get a custom pc company to assembly it for you. Ibuypower.com is a pretty good and cheap place to start. The total of the stuff you had on newegg was about 1,130 bucks. That on Ibuypower.com will get you similar if not better components, free shipping, and the option to get warrentys. It might end up costing you an extra 100-200 dollars but with a warrenty and not having to install all the hardware/software yourself makes it more then worth it in my book.

Theres plenty of other custom pc sites out there so just google search if you want to shop around.

I'd stay away from any brand name site, dell, alienware, etc, because they charge you a ton for the brand name.

Edit: Remember even if you do end up getting a custom pc you'll probably get stuff like the monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse, etc cheaper then if you buy them seperately as well. So the total cost of your system might end up being pretty close to what you have on that newegg page.

Dell is actually overpriced. If I were to buy a PC for the same price from them, I would have been given a pc that is almost equivalent in every aspect minus the graphics card, and it would be much harder to upgrade in the future. As for the difficulty, I am up for the challenge. Besides, I've put too much time and effort into this to back out now.

You're right to not go for dell, they are renowned for being overpriced (nearly as much so as apple), and assembly is far easier than people would lead you to beleive (match PCI-xpress ports to PCI-express, CPU to cpu chipset etc). Most motherboards come with a manual, I wouldn't be too worried.

Looking over your list quickly, the two things that jump out at me are this;
-You'll be better off getting vista ultimate over home (I know it costs extra but in the end it's worth it for the extra control, home is a dumbed down version)
0For $40 you should be able to get the equivilent logitech laser mouse (I got mine for $40, mx400, and I live in "jacked up prices" Australia).

Other than those two (minor) things, I guess maybe a 24" screen may be worthwhile (not much more, better for movies etc), also maybe a little extra ram (64 bit uses a fair bit more than 32 bit), but then again, not worth going over budget for (4gb ram will still run everything smoothly). Good luck building your new PC.

too bad you don't know my grampa eddie,he knows how to make computers, course he also thinks 700mbs of ram is more than enough for a computer to run on.It's not and if you have already started then good luck,I hope it all goes well.

I have had a few friends buy from iBuyPower and simmilar sites, and their computer is usually cheaply put together, with needless led lights everywhere. NewEgg has warantees on all of the parts on my list, so instead of sending back the whole PC I only need to return the broken part.

down here in kentucky it's cheaper to order a computer built from dell than buying most computers and you get more, guess that's just up here then.oh well.

I don't know about the parts and all, but I wouldn't buy Vista. Wait for Windows 7 because Vista will soon be obsolete. Not to say Vista absolutely sucks, I use it myself and I have no complaint. But everything indicates that Windows 7 would be better in nigh all facets. Last thing I heard is that Windows 7 will be out in around October.

Nice choice of building your own PC, and good luck with it!

Edit: Oh and good choice of a mouse, there is no equivalent in my opinion!
Edit2:

Nice, I didn't know that. But make sure there's one, you might not want to be left with Vista anyway.

Not sure about anywhere else but I know on Ibuypower all the extra junk like LED's is optional.

It sounds like you don't mind doing the work yourself though and if you can get warrenty's on important parts through newegg then I guess your pretty much set then. You really should shop around on some other sites/stores though. You might be able to find a better monitor and mouce/keyboard combo cheaper elsewhere.

Edit: Try to see if you can get a version of vista that comes with a free upgrade to windows 7. No idea if you can even buy them like that seperately but if you can go for it. Vista's going to end up being the new Windows ME so yeah.

I browsed over it and everything looked good. The MX518 is a great mouse I've had mine for many years. I've never used an anti static wrist strap in either my professional or personal life but it never hurts to be careful.

Props for building it yourself it makes the machine more yours than buying a factory built one.

Your optical drive is in beige...

Just had fun building 2 machines...one dodgy mobo and the other with a borked Dvd/rw...Lucky we carry spares :D

Ultimate is a waste of cash tbh - Premium isn't that much better I guess, and considering 7 is out fairly soon you may as well get the upgrade pack with your os.

Dell are bunk cheep machines crap after market support, plus if they go wrong independent shops like mine can have a hard time getting parts for them.

From my experience B.E chips don't give that much benefit.

Apart from that seems pretty good.

The copy of Vista that I'm getting comes with a coupon to get Windows 7 free when it comes out.

Looks very good, for the most part. You can get a modular 600w [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150359].

Happy building.

Don't forget the thermal paste!
Thermal Paste comes pre-applied to the heatsink so it isn't needed.

I would rather stay safe with the boosted cooling in the 4870. As for the power supply, I'd rather get the 700w so I can upgrade other parts without needing to upgrade the power supply every time.

only things i would have changed was

no amd, they aren't as good as intel this time around
video card should be nvidia, ati just doesn't have the best support
asus mobo, had way too many issues with gigabyte and i know other people who've had issues with them

asus can be pricey but they're worth every penny of it and make a great mobo
