so yesterday when i was in EB picking up a gift card for my brother for xmas. while i was in EB i found a dirt cheap preowned copy of Rockstars Bully on the Wii so i decided to pick it up for myself.

how is this game? Bully is the only Rockstar made game that doesn't look like total garbage in my eyes so thought i'd try it out.

is it very similar to GTA?

Its a pretty great games. Its kind of like GTA in terms of some of its world design, quest structure, and dialogue systems, but its its own thing. I don;t like the GTA games very much, but I enjoyed Bully, it was pretty unique.

Probably Rockstar's best game.

- The "open-world" is very small, so there's very little time spent on traveling around.
- There's no cars, so no akward or infuriating driving sections.
- Your main form of attack is punching, so very little aiming issues.
- The world is very cartoony, making the more obnoxious characteristics of Rockstar's games blend in better. Though it's definately not as obxious as GTA5, thank God.
- Great soundtrack reminiscent of Mark Mothersbaugh.
- Has one of the best, most underrated villains.

Out of all of Rockstar's games Bully is the only one I genuinely enjoy. Probably because it has actual charm.

I remember having an inordinate amount of fun with the lawn mowing mini game
a solid 7/10 otherwise

It's a great game, though it's very easy to complete and quite short compared to most open world games of it's style.

It's pretty good, but the Wii port is awful. New content aside, it has so many bugs and technical problems that weren't there originally.

yeah i'll probably pick up the 360 version at some point as well if i can find it.

i'm first and foremost a Nintendo collector though so i thought i'd this to my Wii collection, especially since it was right there and only cost me $9

I saw a couple copies of the scholarship edition at GameStop and probably would have grabbed it myself, but those were $30 and I don't feel like spending that much on a game that old.

Bully might very well be Navid Khonsari's best work. It's a combination of all of rockstar's "San Andreas" era gameplay philosophies wrapped around a pretty interesting fish out of water tale. If you want to enjoy Rockstar's open-world/game-play design genius without the usual crime stuff, this is the game for you.

*edit*
Just checked wikipedia on a whim and apparently Navid didn't work on it. I still distinctly remember reading from several sources that he was the head writer for Bully. Can anyone here provide info that can confirm/deny that?

If you want a concise reasoning as to why Bully is good or not- you could do a lot worse than Nerd3:

Honestly the Scholarship Edition as a whole isn't as good as the original release. A lot of the stuff they added was just tedious and it brought the whole game down.

i'm in australia and on average game price's here are $100 for a newly released game at the RRP so $30 still wouldn't be too bad in my eyes.

the Wii copy of Bully i got was $18 at the normal price preowned but EB is currently having a "all games $18 and under 50% off" sale atm so i was sold and got Bully for $9.

That's a steal for so much gaming quality. You're in for a good time man.

Yeah, the combat isn't particularly great (as in all rockstar games). It does get better as you learn more moves, but never gets really good.

As for the main character, he's a total dipshit, but he does start growing on you. Give it like 2 hours and actually do some sidequests before making a judgment, the side characters tend to be pretty fun.

Honestly, of all the games I played featuring non-fancy, non-martial arts brawling, this one's probably one of my favourites. I can't think of any other game that allows me to do a running tackle-grapple and then follow that up with a vicious knee to the balls. Satisfying as all hell.

Overall I did like Bully. That being said...

It's far too short and easy. The short thing isn't much of a criticism... If I want more then the game usually is pretty good. But easy is generally a big problem for me. After a very short time in game you become able to breeze through every single situation in the game. Bully feels like an rpg where you become OP at level 2. The activities and quests are varied enough that it remains fun, even though challenge becomes a non-issue about 10 minutes in.

I remember The Warriors on PS2, also by Rockstar, had a similar dirty, grapple-based combat. This was all the more fun if you were playing co-op because you got to do things like hold an enemy while your friend beat him up, stuff like that. Sleeping Dogs also has a lot of intense CQC that's immensely satisfying (tackles, jumpkicks, kneebreakers, etc).
