Burzum - What do you know, and what is your opinion?

I'm going to write an essay in history about Burzum (Varg Vikernes's artist name) and was wondering how many that have heard of him.

So please respond to this thread in this manner:
1. State if you have heard about him before reading this post
2. What your opinion on him is based on what you knew and what you eventually find by googleing him (if you care).

He was my neighbor (true fact).
I used to se him and his buddies all the time as they walked to the store to buy beer =)
I was only 13 or so at that time but i remember him and looking through the celing window (he lived in the attic on the house straight across the street from me) and looking at crosses, satanic symbols and general blackness =)
It came as a big shock when he got arrested and they found several kilos og high exposives in the house.


As far as my opinion on him goes he's a raging lunatic. Going from viking ideology fanatic (before prison) to neo-nazi (after imprisonment). His music on the other hand is great.

Oh hes that dude from Mayhem who killed that other dude from Mayhem. Only time I've heard of a murderer and his victim performing together on an album. Pretty black metal if you ask me.

So ya didn't recognize name at first but remembered who he was after google. Not really a huge fan of real black metal, only listen to symphonic black metal or progressive bands that incorporate it.

Don't approve of the murder, seemingly racists ideas and the church burning and all that, though it does seem like a bitchin marketing tactic for black metal. Though I can see why they would be pissed off about churches, as the religion was basically forced on them. But all you really have to do is just not support it yourself and it will go away if no one wants it there.

2. Uh. Well, based on what I know of him, I reckon his music's actually pretty good, although a little extreme for me. It's essentially...static. It's insane. And yet I like it. I haven't heard much of his music, but the songs I have heard have so many fuzzy layers of subtly hypnotic melodies. (I can't believe I just wrote that. I totally pulled that crap out of thin air.) I can't tell if the guy is mad, or a genius. And while I don't care for his beliefs much, he seems pretty badass. Although he can't seem to stick to one set of ideals for very long.

2. Fucking top bloke. Nah I'm kidding. I read about all the shit he did in Norway with the church burnings and the murders and the jail and what not. Very interesting guy.

I find his music to be really shitty though.

I've heard of him before. I've even listened to a couple of his albums. Fairly good stuff if you're into that sort of music.
As for my opinion of him, he's a nutter and deserves to be rotting in jail for the murder. Can't say I approve of the church burnings either as arson isn't the sort of thing that makes for a good society.

I'm a Norwegian and a metal fan, so yeah, I know quite a lot about him. Not a bad musician, but a really bad person. The guy is completely insane.

Ah, I'm too lazy to explain why that is most certainly not an epic beard.
Though it's mostly because it doesn't even cover the bottom of his face.

Yes, I've heard of him. Anyone knee-deep into Metal who hasn't heard of him deserves my pity.

No, I'm not the biggest fan of his music. I find it merely okay, not as mindblowing as everyone proclaims it to be.

I'm pretty familiar with the whole story, read some of his work, he's a fairly interesting writer but then again most nutcases are. I think what he did was terrible and only someone in puberty desperately rejecting his christian parents would consider to be 'cool'.

His music though, I gotta say, it's absolutely ridiculous. I never got the whole hype around it, it's just bad writing, bad performance and bad recording by some frustrated teenager.

I've heard of him before, mostly as "that guy from mayhem that murdered another guy from mayhem and tried to pass off 23 knife wounds to the neck and back of the head as "self defence".".

I tried reading his biography on his site but couldn't get past the huge amounts of stupid where he completely misinterprets LOTR and the "this 12 year old kid threatened me with a .357 magnum revolver so I invited him to my band" part.

The only interest I had in black metal was Dimmu Borgir before they fired everybody good from the band so I haven't listened to his music much.
