1) That's a name? Sounds more like a sneeze o_O But no, I haven't heard of him
2) Neutral I guess, as I don't know of him or any of his work

I'm not a big BM fan but I enjoy the occasional Burzum session.
He's a murderer so I guess he's bad. Church burning is kind of silly, although if you want to go into the details Christianity was kind of forced on their country and most of Europe, rather than accepted, so rebelliousness of that kind isn't entirely uncalled for nor unexpected. I'm not saying I condone such acts, just saying.

I've heard the name Burzum before but I have no knowledge about this guy, and therefore no opinion of him either. Although, Google tells me that he's a dick and I'm guessing that I wouldn't take to his music.

1. The man is arguably the most despised man in Norway; serial arsonist, anti-religion, outspoken militant Nazi and callous murderer, Varg has all ticked all the social pariah boxes perfectly. First gaining popular disdain by burning down the Asane, Storetveit and Fantoft stave churches, Varg then murdered Øystein Aarseth and is on parole from a 21-year-sentence.

2. Upon seeing interviews with the man for a project I worked on in sixth form college and all-round testimony, I think he is a danger to himself and others. He should never be released from prison for his own good. I'm not a fan of his music, although I do like Black Metal. His remorseless attitude towards his crimes speaks for itself and the smile he gave as his sentence for murder was read out was apalling, for starters.

1. Never heard of him.

2. A: Cool name.
2. B: "In 1994 Vikernes was convicted of the murder of his Mayhem bandmate Øystein Aarseth, known by his stage name Euronymous. Vikernes was further convicted of four counts of arson involving the burnings of historic churches, and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Having served almost 16 years of a 21-year prison sentence, Vikernes was released on parole in early 2009"

Murderer/Arsonist, huh? Oh, and "He draws a direct connection between both race and intelligence and intelligence and religion, denouncing theism as "mental enslavement" fit only for "inferior races""

Leaving my respect for him at about the same level that I uphold for my classmates.

1. I know of him. I'm a fan of Burzum and found them (and therefore about him) through lurking for some nordic black metal.

2.To be absolutely honest, I like his work with the local churches and such. I may just be as mad as him (but I am definitely not pro-nazi like him). Other than that, he's a lunatic that's in a band I like.

Huge BM fan here, know a lot of his history etc
I really enjoy early Burzum, did not like his atmospheric/ambient work though.
I accidentally bought one of his ambient albums when I was new to BM, that was my first exposure to Burzum and I was like "What is this shit?" later a friend persuaded me to check out Det Som Engang Var and I loved it.

As for the guy himself, well, at times he seems quite interesting and intelligent but other times he comes across as a total lunatic(and not just in the sense of he killed someone and burnt churches).

I'm not sure what I think in the end, a lot of things about him are not very objective and sometimes just nonsense, I read a book called Lords of Chaos: The Rise of the Satanic Metal underground which supposedly had a great look into the history of BM but it got a fair bit of the history wrong and pretty much every interview with him made him sound like a babbling moron. *shrug* In the end, he doesn't really matter much to me, it's interesting to know the history but so long as I like the music, that's the main thing.

Good luck with your essay.

Its meh.

I like their (his), ambient tunes and tracks, but I despise black "vocal".
So its great until Varg opens his mouth. In my opinion of course.

1. yeah ive heard of him mainly cause of listening to quite a bit of Black Metal recently also i remember him getting interviewed in Metal: A Headbangers Journey
2.his music is alright but its not as good as Bathory or Sigh or even Immortal, my mate idolises him however and i try talking him out of it cause this guy is clearly a douche but so was euronymous (the guy he Killed) because apparently he pressured Mayhems singer (Dead) into commiting suicide for band publicity, but yeah anyone who takes black metal as their life style (meaning in which has an irrational fear of christians, burns churches and has goats heads and nazi memorabilia in their house)is obviously wrong in the head

1: Heard of him (thanks, TV Tropes!)
2: Don't like Black Metal, but he fascinates me in a horrifying way.

1. No idea who he is
2. Looks like a young Billy Connolly. Beard is not epic - needs to be getting on for ZZTop or Brian-Blessed-circa-Flash-Gordon length/bushiness before that can really be applied. Website gives me the impression of someone trying a little too hard. Magazine covers give no clues other than he's probably a death metaller.

haven't read or listened any further than that. busy day. maybe later.
is he anything to do with Alestorm? :D

Extra information:

One funny/wierd fact is that in Norway, Burzum does not "Exist".

The band doesn' exist, and hasn't existed, and if it did exist it certainly played no part in the development of Norwegian Black Metal.

In addition you can't buy his cd's in stores, and if you ask for cd's of Burzum most retailers will tell you that they have conviniently "forgotten" about Burzum.

The reason for this is mainly because the stores don't want to come into conflict with left wing extremeists, or they themselves are left wing extremeists.

Got 2 of his albums and 2 shirts. I think he's able to make some pretty decent tunes. I also think it's funny to everywhere while wearing a Burzum shirt. No one knows what he stands for, so it's alright to walk around with a murdering nazi on your torso. Not that I approve, it's just really offensive. In a secret way.

You seem to have something against "left-wing extremists".

OT: Heard of him, and I think I may have liked some of his music.

Nah, I don't have anything against "left-wing extremists". Ijust stated what Varg Vikernes stated in his biography.
