If I recall correctly, most of those laws date back many years, when morals were still given force by law. It's just that nobody has bothered to repeal them.

As to the OP: Hardcore pornography is legally restricted to 18 year olds where I'm from, and I thought that the law in Texas would be the same.

So yeah, he is breaking the law (as I understand it) by showing them something for which they are not legally viable, same as if he showed them anything else 18 rated.

And 9 is probably still too young to be learning about sex (as in intercourse etc), though that might be my old conservatism talking.

To the topic: I have no trouble with the guy educating his kids, but you'd have to be pretty stupid to use hardcore porn as teaching material. Unless you let the kids watch it and say "This is what it usually isn't", then maybe you have a bit of an argument. But not really for kids that young.
