one of the games i most enjoyed playing on my DS was final fantasy 3. (the real one) i dont know why, but i was just drawn to this, and i loved it. other than that, i would probably go with what everyone else is saying, super mario bros, kirby etc

Animal Crossing is very fun and there is enough to do, though I would not get it and a Harvest Moon game. I would also recommend Rune Factory 2. I haven't actually played it, but its not like there is a continuing plot to my knowledge that would require playing through the first game and character interaction with the NPCs is so too simplistic and just annoying for what was supposed to be a key gameplay feature in the first game. But it was still fun.
Galaxy Wars comes to mind. Many people I know recommend The World Ends With You (if you can find it). I would also say the Phoenix Wright games. Kirby Superstar Ultra if you like platform games. Metroid Prime Hunters if you like FPSs or Metroid games.

GTA Chinatown Wars.
It's the best (of the two) GTAs this generation, the most fun DS game out there, and it's one of the few ds games that really has hours upon hours of play going for it. The gameplay can be never-ending if you like the old Dope Wars game which is integrated beautifully into the sandbox. It also brings the fun back to the GTA franchise.

I can also get behind the Castlevania suggestions.

Of the earlier games you can get for cheap, I would recommend Trauma Center; it's a fun surgery sim.

yay, DS Lite! :D I just got mine for my birthday (end of february), and I've only played like 6 different games for it ><
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Elite Beat Agents are both good. :p Elite Beat Agents is a loltastic rhythm game (I think the main reason I play it is for the fact that your boss says "Agents are GO!!!" before missions), and Castlevania is.. well yeah, Castlevania.
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a good game, as well, except it's got no replay value at all - once you finish it, you might as well sell it back, but it's worth playing.

I must say, GTA: Chinatown Wars looks good. I enjoyed playing Dope Wars alot in the past.

Trauma Center should fit nicely on the DS, considering the stylus and all that, but I heard it can get exceedingly hard after the second half of the game. Would this be enough to put one off?

NPC interaction, love, marriage and all that.. Is it poorly done in Rune Factory 1? Can't really say it's awesome in any of the other Harvest Moon titles either, seeing as they mostly feed you one liners each time you talk to them :>

Music Beat games are more at home on the big screen with friends gathered in the couch, can't really say I'd enjoy them in this small format :>

There are so many people recommending Castlevania that I am starting to wonder if I am missing out on something completely awesome here :p
Which is the best one currently out there? I assume there's not much of a super plot tying them together. Which means I could just jump on the band wagon at the best one currently out.

Just found another game that I wasn't aware of!

Scribblenauts!

This game looks really fun, and is most definately going to be a must get for me when it comes out!

(On the off chance that someone here actually didn't know about it, I thought I'd recommend people to check it out at least :> )

Any other suggestions?

Are the older Final Fantasy games connected storywise? Or can I just pick up one and play it as a stand alone?

I've not played much more than 1 and parts of 2, but I couldn't say I felt they were connected storywise.

If you have time to sit down and play get Dragon Quest V. It requires quite a commitment but it's a very fun game.

If you're into SRPGs then both Disgaea and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor are good buys as well. They have nice quick save features too so you can shut them off when necessary.

If you don't mind walls of text then the Phoenix Wright series is great. It's always a blast to solve cases. Apollo Justice wasn't as good though. Ace Attorney Edgeworth looks promising too.

And finally Scribblenauts is guaranteed to be fun. Buy it when it's released.

The Castlevania games, Phoenix Wright series, Elite Beat Agents (or if you can import it, the musically superior Ossu! Tatakae! Oendan!) the Mario and Luigi game (it's an RPG, not a platform game), Advance Wars games are always great.
Uh, this? The Mario & Luigi game he mentions is Partners In Time.

I'd also add Professor Layton, and Chrono Trigger is, of course, a remarkable game in any form.

The World Ends With You. Even Yahtzee liked it. Knights in the Knightmare is also an awesome game that really takes advantage of the DS. Other cool games include Professor Layton, Chrono Trigger, Shin Megami:Devil Survivor, New Super Mario Brothers, and Super Robot Taisen OG Saga - Endless Frontier.

Another question; How important is it to get screen protectors for the DS?
Not very important seeing as most of the better games on the DS dont use the touch screen alot, get at least one extra stylus ( the pens used to touch the screen) you will never go too long without losing one. If your into strategy Final Fantasy Tacticsc A2 is good. It's much better than the FFT advanced and I played over 25 hours easy on FFTA2.

super mario 64 ds was definitely worth my money. minigames are fun for your 5 minute coffee break, story has some nice differences from the original n64 version.
also if you're a casual shooter fan you'd like metroid prime hunters, pretty much resembles the metroid prime series, only on a smaller display :D atmosphere, gameplay and especially the controls are wonderful, haven't seen a ds shooter this good ;)
lastly, if you like either turn-based strategy games, or warhammer 40k, squad command has exceeded my expectations (which were VERY low xD) and implements a lot of rules from the actual tabletop game, kinda like final liberation, only more up-to-date^^

these are the 3 games that i've spent many hours on train rides and flights with, and all worth their money, especially now that they are a bit older you'll probably get them each for 10-20$ ;)

This Mario game is coming September 9 of this year. This game is RPG styled, but with a Mario and Luigi theme. The cool thing about this entry in the series is how you can play as Bowser. If you want something like this now, buy Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, or its squeal, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. Clicky this long link! [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=75080]

You want this game already, but I can't tell you how much I want to play this game. From the demos I have seen, it is amazing. [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=74879]

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. This game looks very similar to previous Kingdom Hearts games, except you play as Roxas and people from Organization XIII. If you aren't familiar with with the series, you may want to look into more. This game's release is September 29th. [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73827]

The last game is a game that I am interested in finding more information about. This game is CSI: Deadly Intent. If you do not watch the CSI TV series, then you might want to just skip it. But solving crimes as Las Vegas Crime Lab might be a lot of fun. [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=75488]

Note: None of these games are available at the moment. The first 3 are out by the end of next month, and the last one is out at the end of October. Each link takes you to their Gamestop.com page, where it has its trailer, release date and extra info. I hope the links are not eye sores.
