I'm considering buying a PS3, for a couple of reasons. The Blu-Ray player, as I want one, so why not a PS3 and not a dedicated player? And exclusives.

I'm mainly a PC gamer, but I also have a decent collection of Xbox 360 games. I love the controller on the 360, and use it for my PC as well, how does the PS3 controller compare? Is it more comfortable than the PS2 controllers?

If it helps a decision, these are the exclusives I'm interested in:
-Uncharted series
-God of War series
-The Last of Us (this is the main one)

Shadow of the Colossus and Okami were also released for the PS3, yes? If so, them too.

Also, are there any risks with the system, like the 360's RROD?

Any input would be appreciated.

I still have my original ps3 and it's still going strong. I use it all the time, just not for games. It's my go to blu-ray player, and I also use it for netflix and lovefilm-instant, which it does very nicely.

The controller is a little different, but it's still completely workable.

They can go reasonably cheaply 2nd hand nowadays, I'd say get one. I don't know how tight your budget is though.

Yes, buy one but some things:
The 360 controller is much better. The analog triggers beat the digital trigger of the PS3 controller, particularly on racing games. PS3 controller is still very good though, and is, to me about identical to the PS2 controller.
The PS3 has been called the best Bluray player there is, bar none. It is it's owner's, Sony, flagship and gets lots of firmware updates.
Uncharted 2 in in my top 3 best game list of Gen 7. So far;

3: Fallout 3
2: Uncharted 2, a PS3 exclusive
1: Batman Arkham City

UC2 will not play on the PS4 and is so good you shouldn't miss it.

No, wait till winter this year for the PS4 to hit. Overnight the PS3 will half in value. Its so close you might as well wait.

the PS3 controller is almost identical to the PS2, except for the triggers, but unless you play a lot of racing games, you won't care. honestly i've always preferred the PS controllers over Xbox though.

if you get a new PS3 now, there is very little risk of the YLOD (yellow light of death), plus you can get a pretty massive hard drive (which you can replace with practically any SATA hard drive if you ever run out of room).

there is also the PS1 backwards compatibility, plus the PS1 and PS2 classics on PSN, which are only growing.

God of War 3 and Demon's Souls (another PS3 exclusive) were the games i bought with my PS3 and i was very happy with both of them, and you can get all of the PS2 and PSP GoW games on the PS3 as well.

Yes its worth it unless the PS4 interests you at all then you should wait. If you want a Blu-Ray player and basic smart TV functionality for streaming services etc its good value anyway, not the cheapest option but if you play games too its worth it.

To save a few quid if you have an old 2.5" HDD lying around buy the super slim without a hard drive and buy the cheap bracket to fit it. You can save £50 doing it that way and make it even better value, you can even get a 1TB drive and bracket for slightly over the cost of the super slim with a 500GB HDD.

I've had mine for about a year, and I've been very happy with it. Lots of JRPG exclusives make me happy as well as a solid selection of ps1/2 classics to download. I haven't used it as a bluray player, so I can't speak to the quality of that, but I haven't had any technical issues or anything.

The PS4 won't be backwards compatible, so if you like the games on the PS3, barring a future price drop, now's as good a time as any to buy one.

If you want a blu ray player and some exclusives, I'd say get it since it sounds like you'd be using it. There was another thread asking about the media capabilities and a PS3 can play more than blu rays, you can play files off a thumb drive or stream files from your computer. The PS3 is a lot more reliable than the 360.

The PS3 controller feels like the PS2 with triggers. I loved the PS2 controller so that's a positive for me, and I never had any issues with the triggers. Depending on your taste of games there are a lot more exclusives as well, I love the bigger JRPG library it has.

If you really want to buy it but are unsure of the large price and made this thread because you want people to tell you to buy it.
Buy it.

Of course it's worth it. Now more than ever. It's cheap and some older games are now cheap as well. You can get a lot of value for your money if you get it IMO.

Buy it when the PS4 comes out. They usually have a massive sale on the previous generation's consoles around that time.

About the controller: Personally, I hate it. I find it inferior in every way except for the D-pad. But that only matters if you're into fighting games. And you can just get a third party controller similar to the 360's if you want.

It's definitely worth it for the exclusives and PS+. Just don't buy multiplatform games on it - they tend to be really crappy compared to other platforms. GTA IV, Bayonetta, Skyrim (it's barely playable on PS3), RDR etc.

I bought a second hand one about 4 months ago. I'm definitely not getting a next gen console for a long time anway and there are quite a few good exclusives.

Controller is fine, even though the triggers could be designed a bit better they aren't uncomfortable.

So far its become my favorite system to play now. There are a ton of good games on it. Of course alot of these you can find on the Xbox 360, I never liked the controller. You know my first Xbox broke, which made me 50 shades of pissed off. This is a list of the games I own for it to get some ideas in your head.

1. Shadow of the Colossus.
2. Assassin's Creed 2
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
4. Batman Arkham City.
5. Portal 2.
6. Mirror's Edge.
7. Vanquish.
8. Left 4 Dead
9. Rage
10. Flower
11. Demon's Souls
12. Resident Evil 4 HD
13. Mass Effect
14. Dark Souls
15. Fallout 3
16. Bayonetta
17. Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Certainly. Lots of great games. Hell, buy the PS3 and pay 50 euros/dollars for PSN Plus, you'll have more games to play than you'll ever need (Unless you're me! :D)

Anyway, there's a bunch of good exclusives, such as the Infamous series and MGS4, a bunch of great HD remakes (Okami!) and a wealth of console only titles (such as Red Dead Redemption or Dragon's Dogma, assuming you don't have an XBOX)

No. The PS3 is going to die soon, thanks to the launch of the PS4. My advice is wait until the PS4 comes out and buy that instead. Although the PS4 might be more expensive.

But the PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility ATM. Not to mention if he has the money now, 6 months is a lot of time to save up.

OP: Yeah, it's worth it. I'm starting to wonder why I choose the 360 over the PS3. The best exclusive IMO is Uncharted, but I've heard varying opinions over 3(2 is generally agreed to be a masterpiece).

I'd recommend;

* Valkyria Chronicles & Ni No Kuni, if you're into JRPGs.
* Twisted Metal for car combat
* Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper for platformers

Compared to the 360, PS3 has a lot more "first-party" stuff.

i sincerely doubt the PS3 will 'die' once the PS4 comes out. sony supported the PS2 until only this year (and the PS3 came out in 2006...), and as long as there are significant PS3 users, i doubt sony will just pull the plug to force us to get a PS4. that type of mentality from sony will only backfire in their faces.

Absolutely. Anyone who says to buy a PS4 instead is an idiot because you've already stated that you want to play PS3 exclusives, which so far, is said to be impossible to play on a PS4 unless they are REALLY working on that streaming service thing.

Games are cheap, even the exclusives, with the coming release of the PS4, and if you wait until it comes out, you may be able to get the console and games for even cheaper.

As for the controller, it's one of the most comfortable controllers I've ever used. While the triggers are a bit of an issue if your fingers are made of fucking grease, the rest of the controller is almost perfect. I've used it in place of a real 360 controller when playing games on PC, and use it for emulators as well.

The PS3 won't die when the PS4 comes out. Too many games are still coming out around that time for PS3, and Sony has a record of continuous support of their consoles long after their next one comes out. (Ps2 was still THE console to own until around 2006-07)
