Yes, buy one but some things:
The 360 controller is much better. The analog triggers beat the digital trigger of the PS3 controller, particularly on racing games.
to each their own but i much prefer the ps3 controller to the 360 controller, and i like the ps2 controller better than both of them (i like the feel of the L2 and R2 triggers on the ps2 controller better). different strokes for different folks, but whenever i play xbox at my friends house, the controller just feels awkward to me. i had a 360 pad that i used for pc gaming for a while, but i decided to just get another ps3 controller because i liked the feel of it better
You may just be more used to the PS2 controller, which is excellent. But those racing games really do benefit from analogue. I've used both a lot. I don't have a 360 anymore, but still use it's controller on PC games. It is incredible. I can't imagine improving on it.

as for the op, since youre primarily concerned in a bluray player, id say get a ps3, its still one of the better cheap players out there, as far as i know.
I've heard (from HD Nation at revision3.com among others) as the PS3 is Sony's, the owner of Bluray patent flagship in need of constant firmware updates, the PS3 is the BEST Bluray player out there. I have 2 and love them. I have some internal bluray players and externals... I can't write either is better than the PS3 and may not be as good. Get a PS3!

only reason i might say wait is, as other have mentioned, the price may drop considerably after the ps4 is released
It may. A bit. I thought the original Xbox would drop through the floor after the 360. It went down to, I think, $130 from $150 and then couldn't be found new at any price.

The PS4 may cost $600. The PS3 can be had at $250 now. Maybe it'll go down to $200 before disappearing? I wouldn't wait over $50. Too many great games to play.
well i dont play racing games so i cant comment about that but as i said, i used a 360 pad as a controller for pc for a while, so i had plenty of time to get used to it, but i still like the sony controller much much better. i didnt get the impression from the op that he or she plans to do much gaming on the ps3, it seems mainly for blurays. i was just pointing out to him or her that a potential price drop may be something worth taking into consideration, if money is tight or it wasnt a high priority for them

No, wait till winter this year for the PS4 to hit. Overnight the PS3 will half in value. Its so close you might as well wait.
To original poster...

I was thinking of something similar but sooner, If you can wait till E3 or when ever they plan to debut the real announcement of the PS4 the PS3 will likely drop in price around then but unless the PS4 gets revamped to be backwards compatible the PS3 won't drop much more in price because it will still have games exclusive to it that no other console can play on it. Unless you'd just want to wait till The Last of Us releases.

Well, personally I wouldn't go for it, but it seems that the rest of the forum doesn't agree with me.

But, to help out:

As a Blu-Ray player you can't go wrong - as others have mentioned Sony keep it very up to date, but expect frequent 30 minute updates.

The PS3 controller is inferior to the 360 controller, particularly in the analogue sticks and trigger departments. But after prolonged gaming you really won't notice.

The Uncharted series is very good imo, peaking at number 2. God of War, I can take or leave to be honest.

There are risks with any system that you buy, but the PS3 is particularly sturdy. I had a launch model for 5 years before it YLOD'd on me and the risk is reduced with the newer model. It's also very quiet as well, which is always a plus.

PS4 can't play PS3 games though. So maybe it won't halve in value overnight.

Did that happen with the N64 when the gamecube was released (no I'm seriously asking because I don't know if it did or not)?
It didn't. What did happen was the N64 became a lot harder to get new. Which I'm thinking is what will happen this time too. I kind of doubt the PS3 will drop much more in price really, and the input here convinced me, so I ordered one today. Thanks folks.
