While I won't always play games I've just bought as I might be finishing another one and don't want to be distracted, I always open the packaging to inspect the material. I once bought a game, didn't open it for a while, and upon opening it discovered there was no disc. It was past the store's return date.

I have quite the backlog consisting mostly of bargains, or games from the Steam sales. Full-price purchases tend to take priority, but I also replay my favorite RPGs from time to time.

Recently I played both KotOR and Mass Effect games, despite my backlog of 50+ games. '-'

I had Guild Wars for like 2 years before I started playing it, just never got around to it even though I wasn't really doing anything else. It was just me being lazy I guess.

I always intend to play games that I buy. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. When I buy a collection of old games for example, I am often distracted by the shiny new stuff to bother with something old. That really is the problem in a nutshell. There are too many games to play and not nearly enough time to play them all.

I recently had about 6-7 games in a backlog (pre-christmas sales = cheap games brought on mass by me) that has diminished heaps since then due to time off (only Bioshock 2 remains,) so yeah I do backlog games, not too often though.

As to why, It allows me to play each game in it's own time, I'm not rushing to complete games to play the next one or dumping it halfway through. Plus I'm not stuck with nothing to play if there's nothing coming out, nothing is on sale or if I'm not willing to pay full price for a new game. Simple.

I still haven't played Mass Effect 2.
I even own the Collectors Edition.
Same with AssCreed BroHo, got Codex edition, never played it.
This usually occurs with sequels for me, I can't play newer games in the series if their in a contunuum unless I've finshed the preceeding games. I only just finished Awakening.

I think this is more to do with my lack of time to finish games and my lack of desire to finish them with the limited time I do have. I have too many games on the go at once.

I don't think it's a concious decision to not play a game after buying it, it's more like:
"That game sounds fun, I MUST HAVE IT!"
But then not really having the time/motivation to play it.

I've played all the games I physically own...otherwise what's the point in spending that much money to buy them?

However after the Steam sale my library is quite full of games I will probably never play, but still bought as they were under £3.
