Buying games you already own... again!

Aside from the perils of re-buying a game you lost or got damaged, there are certain situations I've found myself in where I will buy a game I already own again. These usually boil down to playing it on a different console, a digital platform I prefer better, or sometimes it's just bundled with other games I don't have.

Case in point: I have probably 4 copies of Sonic 2, I've bought the Sega Genesis Collection for PS3, PSP (to have on the go), Steam (to have on my PC) all while still owning the original Genesis version of it (sitting wistfully in the closet).

I've bought games like GTA:V, Dragon's Dogma, and Assassin's Creed Black Flag on Steam after having owned them originally on PS3 due to my preference for PC gaming (and my PC being a much more powerful system).

So I'm curious, what games have you bought more than once and why?

I recently got MGS V on PS4 after getting the Steam version, but I think my case might be cheating as I got the steam copy from a friend of mine who just randomly gifted it to me.
I told him that it shouldn't have, not because it's custom when someone gives you a gift but because I was worried my laptop wouldn't run it.

Turns out I was right and it died before I could complete the game but on the plus side, I don't have to have the game run in under 1000x800 resolution anymore :p

I have bought Morrowind like... 5 times:

- Bought the vanilla Xbox version
- Bought GotY Xbox version
- Bought another GotY Xbox version when I lost the previous disk
- Bought it on Steam many years later
- Bought it for PC again when I got the Elder Scrolls Anthology (physical disks + Steam keys)

Totally worth it.

I think I ended up buying Beyond Good and Evil three times, though two of those were the HD remaster (xbox 3660 and pc).

Have picked up a few games twice, sometimes because of limitations with the platform I got them initially

The game I have bought most is FFVII. I got the original on PSX then I wanted to play a game on my new PC (1st PC ever) so bought the Windows version (which I never got to play as the PC was not powerful enough at the time). Then I bought the Platinum edition on PSX incase my original discs got scratched or damaged.

When it was released on PS3 I got the digital edition so I could play on my PSP then I got the PC version with the slightly upscaled graphics which I intended to mod but have not done so yet due to my horrendous internet speed. Finally I bought the one they bought out on PS4 which I believe is basically the newer PC version.

I was going to buy the Japanese original and International version for collectable purposes when I was over there but did not bother in the end.

I am tempted to buy the upcoming remaster of Valkyria Chronicles for PS4 because I love that game but I am not sure I am ready to play it again after playing it so much when it was first released.

Oh I bought Bayonetta again as part of the double pack for WiiU as my Xbox 360 died ages ago and it was not really much more expensive for Bayo 1 and 2 than just 2 alone.

I have three copies of Bioshock. I have an original copy, the copy that came free with Infinite, and the copy that came with the 2K collectors set. I don't even like that game : P

I have two copies of Knights of the Old Republic. One on the Best of PC CD (which has this terrible habit of crashing during the cinematic sequences) and one on my phone.

I have multiple copies of the MGS games. I started the series with MGS3, after a big fan of the series loaned me his copy. Years later, I brought the PS1/PS2 MGS collection. But never played that collection since I couldn't get myself to play PS2 games after I got a PS3. I then brought MGS4 on release day, and eventually got the PS3 Legacy Collection that includes all Metal Gear and MGS games, except the Acid and Portable Ops games. I mainly got the Legacy Collection so I can finally play Peace Walker. Along with the original Metal Gear games, and MGS1 & 2.

I also have the Jak and Daxter, Sly, and God of War collections. I never got around to playing the Sly games, and I didn't finish God of War 2. I also brought the non-greatest hit physical copy of Final Fantasy 7. Since I loved the game after its PSN debut, and I found one in really great condition with the jewel case for around 70 dollars. So it wasn't a bad deal for a hard to get game in that condition.

I can only think of one game which would fit the bill here, and that would be "Baldurs Gate 2".
I first got the original, several disk game, and then later the expansion for it. I later got a DVD version of it which was just 2 discs instead of, something like, 5?

Some time later I got it again from Good old Games because I didn't have a dvd player in my old computer and I really wanted another run in the Baldurs Gate world (best game I've played overall). And lastly I bought the enchanted version, ending the string of buying the same game over and over again... for now.

Writing this down really makes me think of myself as some lazy idiot, hehe.

Cheers.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4: I had it on PS2. Then my PS2 broke and I got it for my Gamecube.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Once by itself then with the 10th Anniversary collection.

Medal of Honor: Airborne: See Allied Assault. (For those wondering, the reason I even got the collection was that I didn't have Pacific Assault or the Allied Assault expansions, and it also came with a soundtrack.)

BioShock: I got it on both Xbox and PC.

Fallout 3: See BioShock.

Sonic the Hedgehog: I have no idea how many ways I've gotten this game among itself, remakes, re-releases, and inclusions in other Sonic games.

Mass Effect 1: Bought a copy with my 360. Bought second copy because the first developed a crack in the centre of the disc. Bought the Games on Demand version so I didn't have to risk damaging the new copy. The fourth copy was the Classics Edition (Platinum Hits in the US) because I wanted a hard copy of Bring Down the Sky. Number five was a copy of the Limited Edition of the game. Six came about because I bought the game when it hit PC. The seventh copy was getting the Trilogy boxset on PS3.

The Walking Dead (seasons 1 and 2): I own both seasons on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, Steam, GoG (I wanted DRM free) and Android.

So seven copies of Mass Effect and six of both Walking Dead seasons. When I like a game I go mad on it.

Edit: Technically you could say I have copies eight and nine of Mass Effect, as the key from the PC copy of the game also redeemed on both Steam and Origin. But as I didn't pay for them I don't think it counts.

A good example is some early Blizzard games. I own 5-6 copies of Starcraft and Starcraft Brood War, 3 copies of Diablo 3 and several copies of Diablo. It was mostly a matter of my discs getting ruined. My brothers weren't too kind to them and I swear discs just got more wrecked back then. I had to often replace them.

More recently; I have bought a few copies of old games on GoG just to make it easier than digging out my ancient CD.

I bought three games twice over the course of my gaming life...so far. I had Resident Evil 2 on the N64 (which was an awful port, by the way) and then got the much better version on the GameCube. I started with RE4 on the GameCube when it first came out, but then bought the HD version on the PS3 for the extra content that was added post-GCN. And while I originally got Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2 for my backwards compatible PS3, I bought it again (along with Ico, which I never played before) on that wonderful HD double pack. My rule is I only buy a game twice if the original version I had was crappy or the second purchase includes story and gameplay content I don't already have. If it's just for graphics, I don't bother. The Last of Us is my favorite game of all time, but I'm not buying it on the PS4. That is, if I get a PS4.

Bought the Witcher and Witcher 2 on GoG and Steam.

Why?

Sales, mang. Saaaales. And CD deserves the support for being so awesome.

But I generally avoid rebuying stuff like that if I can help it...though there are certainly exceptions to be made: For instance! Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus. I own it on Vita already and love it, but it's getting a Steam release soon!

So? What's a weeby sort to do but support based XSEED and, hopefully, get more Japanese devs to consider the platform?

'Tis a noble endeavor, to be sure.

Also...1080p Homura and Hikage, bruh.

I rebuy my Steam games on gog.com if they pop on for a good price. I prefer gog.com's model. :p

I bought GTA V for 360 on release, and bought it again for PC. Since I'm a very frugal gamer (almost every game I own, I bought when it was on sale), buying a game at full price not only once, but twice, is pretty much the ultimate compliment I can give a game. And boy was it worth it!

The only reason I buy a game twice is because the one I already have is no longer good for one reason or another so the only game I technically have two of for a reason other than that is Fallout 3 and that's only because the free digital download came with Fallout 4.
